The name Magi comes to us from old Persian. This is also the root word for magic. Magi were the ancient Zoroastrian priest in Parthian, and Sassanian Persia. The top Magi at the same time were also Kings of Persia and typically the Magi, which were kings, traveled with their armies. Let me explain, if Herod spoke to the wise men (Magi) and found out about Christ, he could have simply killed the Magi, if they didn't have an army with them. Secondly, it is quite possible that these wise men would have been killed off by bandits of thieves if they were traveling by themselves. Again, when we think of wise men do we think of young strong man able to defend himself or someone like grandpa Bob. Most of the Parthian Dynasty moved into Armenia after the wars with the Sassanians, and accepted Christianity.

Here is an excerpt from the Armenian Gospel of Infancy.

The Armenian Infancy Gospel: MAGI--According to the Armenian Infancy Gospel, the Magi saw Jesus in different ways. Gaspar sees a child, "Son of God incarnate, seated on a throne of glory." Balthasar sees him as a "commander of the heavenly forces." Melkon, sees him dying in torment, rising and returning to life. They go back to check, and each has the vision that the other two had. (Armenian Infancy Gospel, 11: 19-20)

:amen: that's it!!

and they were only 3 because the bible says that!
Actually, the bible never mentions the number of wise men (Magi - Zoroastrian astologers). It was reduced to three by Cecil B. DeMille (famous filmmaker) because they came beearing 3 gifts: gold, frankincense and myrh. So, to simplify things, and in keeping with the SPIRIT of the text of Scripture, the number of wise men was reduced to three in the movie, The Ten Commandments, and even named them; Melchior, Balthasar, and Gaspar.

Another reason why they would come with an army, having very expensive gifts, they would have been robbed blind. Another FYI, frankincense and mryhh were worth more than gold.
