  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Ok, if I got wireless internet on a laptop, would it cost extra to have AOL on it? Also, is it like having a phone #? How does it dial the service?

I have Ricochet Wireless and it works great, I can use it for my PC or laptop and it connects at about 128k (ISDN) a little slow compared to cable or DSL but it is alot cheaper than them as well (about $5.00 more than dialup.) You will need to pay your ISP as you normally would for the connection to the Internet. You will not have your own phone #, it is just a wireless modem. It works as a wireless connection to the internet like a cell phone. For this reason depending on weather or other circumstances your speed will vary from time to time.

I know AOL supports broadband service now, but I'm not entirely familiar with how AOL works now, as I don't use it. However, I suggest you dump AOL and go with something else, AOL just stinks and it's really a waste. Personally I use Verizon DSL and it works wonderfully and at a decent price, in the year I have had it, I have only had to restart the modem twice.

What you end up doing is really simple, you get broadband service, from whoever it may be, and you hook up the modem. In Cable lines, you'll have a Coaxial cable that runs into the cable modem, in DSL, you'll have a phone line that runs into the DSL modem. Cable connections are "always on" and DSL lines can be set up the same way, so there's no dialing or waiting to connect. From the modem, you run network (Cat-5) cable to a wireless router. Wireless routers are usually around 80 bucks or so, last time I checked, depending on the brand and quality. You then just follow the instructions that come with the router, everything should be easily spelled out for you. Then the router should be broadcasting a signal which can be reached from within a certain radius (depending on multiple variables). Just slap a wireless card on the computer in question and configure the card, the router instructions should tell you how to do it, in some instances it's as simple as slaping the card on the computer. That's all there should be to it. From there you'll have a network connection.

Make ABSOLUTELY sure you change the password on your wireless router! I have a friend who routinely drives down the road with a special antennae on his van that picks up wireless signals. He can see everything transmitted on the connection and can use the connection at will - provided it's without a password, or on the default.

Granted, he's in grad school working on wireless systems, but even the most basic wireless card can pick up an unsecured wireless connection. You do NOT want people using your connection with the patriot act we've got now - you could literally go to jail for something they do (though there's no precident, so I'd imagine that by demonstrating your ACTUAL computer knowledge, you'd have a good chance of getting off).

I don't need a special antennae and I can use my laptop's wireless card to pick up wireless signals.
Changing a password won't help.
You need to use a key to encrypt your connection.
