  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

The target moved fast for a human without training. Zeve followed the sound of running feet through the warehouse, dodging and bounding, taking shortcuts where possible. It wasn’t long before he overtook the figure.

Swerving into an aisle, he had a clear view of a man with light-colored hair. The height and build did not match those of the one his unit had come for, but a presence in this building had to be counted a liability. Zeve focused on the area ahead of the fleeing shape.

“Force Rebound.”

The man seemed to crash headlong into something invisible. For a moment his legs continued to pump without taking him a step further, then he flew backward and slid across the floor on his rear.

Calmly, Zeve aimed the Glock at the man. “Don’t move.”

Ceres sputtered and splashed in the lukewarm water of the formerly still lake. She swam back to the dock and said "See? You couldn't even keep yourself out of the fish guts. Means I AM smarter!" She knew she was being difficult. "I guess I can stay here, but no, I don't think it's a game just because I don't know EVERYTHING yet. And I don't think I need you reminding me you're the leader."
Even though Cerie and Lex had been close, she had been particularly defensive lately. She avoided the dock and walked through the water toward shore, wringing her hair and work shirt of the water that drenched them. Another one up. Another fall. Another reason she couldn't go. Cerie stopped and turned to look at Lex, sure he'd have more to say when he was done laughing.

"See? You couldn't even keep yourself out of the fish guts. Means I AM smarter!" Lex smirked a little. You wish. He wanted to say. But he just listened. "I guess I can stay here, but no, I don't think it's a game just because I don't know EVERYTHING yet. And I don't think I need you reminding me you're the leader."

Lex sighed and nodded. Cerie could be a brat sometimes. “Well then. Let’s get that fish cooked.”

With that, he headed for the spit.

Cerie shut herself up a little. If she couldn't get her way by permission, maybe she'd sneak into town shortly after Lex left...or maybe not. She had a whole fleet of ships to build and had only begun the first of many. Sometimes Lex was cold as stone, and she kind of liked it. Even when things got crazy or she wasn't sure, he kept a cool mindset, or at least a calm demeanor. Instead of pressing Lex for more information, Cerie started cleaning up her tools and scraps from the day of building. Maybe the confusion about the strange, purposeful feelings inside would just numb or callous like her hands would. Now, both her palms and her attitude were covered in irritation in the form of blisters and worries.

"I have to lead him away from Elana, they can't find her..." Panicked thoughts flooded his mind as pictures of the horrible experiments scientists do to the bearers showed Elana going through them. The one chasing him said something Jazen couldn't quite make out and then a sudden slam felt like he hit a brick wall. Sliding across the floor and hitting the wall ahead of him he could feel searing pain through his legs where the force wall had impacted with his knees. He could really have used his old powers, but those were disbanded when he left the agents. The man had a gun on him and Jazen froze in place, "Please, sir, don't shoot! I wasn't doing anything important!" Jazen hoped to play the part of petty thief well enough to throw him off the scent of Elana, not a good plan, but he was desperate. Agents were some of the most dangerous people out there.

----

It was too quiet, Elana had to find out what was going on. Her footsteps made no sound as she crept around the crates. Her eyes glowed red and she held her breath as she listened for the sound of Jazen. Her heightened senses flooded her mind with the sounds suddenly in range of her ears.

"Don't move." A click echoed in her mind as the sound of a gun cocking.

"Jazen.." She breathed out and her wings flexed as she pulled off her large sweatshirt leaving a black T-shirt with slits cut in the back so she could use her wings when needed. The skin covered wings pumped as she rose into the air, finally stretching the long cramped muscles. An ear piercing scream escaped her lungs as she flew quickly through the air toward the man threatening her brother. Her eyes kept their red glow and her eyesight changed to a sort of X-ray vision, she saw into the room where her brother was wounded on the ground and a man was standing over him. She dove for the door to the room to crash through it.

“I’m not interested in you.” Zeve could see with the Darksight spell in place that this was not the man he had come for. Curtly he spoke into the wrist-com, keeping the Glock pointed at the man. “Lance to Spear: We have a liability.”

“Spear here. Need help, captain?”

“I’ve got a civilian here. Go to Plan B and I’ll cover you when I’m done.”

“Roger. Spear on the way.”

Zeve looked back at the man. What to do with him? There was a girl being held for ransom in this building, and it was likely the noise had alerted the kidnapper. He was about to ask if the man had seen the evening news at all this week when an inhuman shriek startled him into pulling the trigger. His reflexes were such that he jerked the weapon up in time to avoid killing the man, but he wasted none in his next movement.

Stepping away and to one side, he cast Force Rebound at the oncoming… creature?

The force rebound went up just as the door exploded into the room. Pieces of wood and metal that would have flown toward them, collided with the wall and fell to the ground. In the space where the door used to be a mostly black figure entered the room. Her eyes resumed their normal color and she held out a hand pointing her index finger at the shooter, "Drop your weapon!" Her voice had a harshness to it that he wouldn't expect from a young girl and her wings folded neatly against her back as she landed gracefully on the ground, her tone was terrified, but trying as hard as she could to remain calm.

Jazen, after ducking away from the bullet, slowly got to his feet ready to tackle the agent if he made a move toward his sister.

“Where am I?”

“Come on, Lex! Let’s go!”

“Who are you?”

“Hurry! They’re coming!”

Lex looked at the boy who was tugging at his arm. The boy seemed to be no older than twelve. He was Lex’s height with short reddish-brown hair. His face was pale and his brown eyes were wide with…what?

Lex looked down at the hand that clutched his arm. He could feel it trembling. And then it gripped him tightly. Too tightly…

Lex gasped.

The hand that gripped his arm was no longer that of a child’s. It had become that of a fully grown man; dark skinned and hard as iron.

Lex looked up into the grinning face of the man who held him by the arm. His green eyes seemed gentle but there was a coldness behind them. Same for the voice that spoke to him.

“Ready, Lex?”

………

His eyes snapped open.

He was lying in his bed, drenched in cold sweat. “Another dream.” He mumbled to himself. He’d been having these dreams lately. Lex couldn’t help but wonder why. Perhaps there was something about them. Something he didn’t know what.

Lex slowly climbed out o bed. He walked to the window and threw open the white curtains that Cerie had woven for him a year ago. It was dawn and the sun was just beginning to rise.

Soon, he would be going into the city. Alone. Without Cerie. Without really knowing why.

But not before he had some breakfast and a nice hot shower.

Cerie slowly began to wake up. Last night she had not done well. She had wondered about the feelings of purpose and worried about Lex's journey to the city. Cerie climbed out of bed and looked outside at the sunrise. Today looked to be a fair day. She pulled another gray work shirt and a pair of trouser shorts out of the trunk at the end of her bed and went into the little bathroom right off of her room. The professor had teased her and said she could have her own to primp herself in. Cerie got dressed and filled an old battered canteen with cool water from the tap. Grabbing her notebook, she went outside into the fresh air and walked to the end of the dock. She wouldn't want to eat for awhile. Now she'd write these feelings down and get some work in before the sun got hot.

“Come on Paul, time to get up.” Paul managed to hear through his sleep, much to his regret. “Uh.” He muttered and rolled over. “Come on Paul, you need to get ready, you know what today is.” “Saturday?” He mumbled jokingly. Today was Saturday, and that was the day he and his mom usually went shopping. They would walk around the city getting the stuff they needed on the way, but spent most of the time just looking through various stores. Paul and his mom didn’t usually have much time to spend together because of their busy schedules, so their little shopping trips were some what of a big deal. And today it was an even bigger deal since Paul’s dad had taken the morning off to go with them. “Come on honey wake up and get showered, you know how long it takes you.” Paul muttered and ok and rolled out of bed, then headed into the shower.

Lex swooped low over the treetops of the wooded area below. His hand gripped a backpack which contained things he might need; money, water, first-aid, his dagger.

He reached a clearing and landed.

Wings Dissolve.”

With that thought, his wings shimmered and vanished. Lex looked around to make sure n one had seen…well, he knew for sure no one had seen his wings. Or maybe the huntsmen had…

Lex shouldered his pack and moved forward. He had a little way to walk before he reached the city.

Cerie was working hard. She barely wanted to stop for breakfast. Carving and sanding and sawing, she worked out the frustrations she felt inside. Maybe she would be able to use her captain's skills somehow, and that's why she felt what she did, about the purposes and callings and wondering what they were.

Which way? She had thought. When I know, I'll stop running. Must keep running. Must escape the questions. Cerie shivered a little as she remembered that time, that desperate time that she had run away from her family. She couldn't face it, she was too different, and they were all the same--pulling her back and pushing her forward, cheering her on but critiquing her. Cerie's bitterness had dissipated, but the memory of it hadn't. Reconciliation had come, but she knew, she couldn't go back. She had had to regain her health and strength...and that's when she had found her wings. They had come by accident, really, but when they had, something fell into place inside her. She had ended up at this house with the professor and Lex, and who would've known that not only would she discover her secret here, but it would be a big part of her life? With wings, someone had said, you can't go back. Cerie sometimes wondered how true that was. More importantly, if she had the chance to go back, would she take it?

Paul was out of the shower and eating a quick breakfast when his mom called him, “You ready to go hun?” Paul took another quick spoonful of corn flakes, “Ya!” He yelled back as he got up grabbing his phone and wallet on the way. He and his family were soon out the door. They only lived a few blocks from the downtown area of the city, so they walked. They dropped by a few stores to grab some necessaries, and then Paul’s mom began her window shopping spree, looking at just about every window they passed. Paul felt his wings start to cramp up. He rolled his shoulders a few times to try and stop the cramping. His dad noticed almost immediately, “Paul, stop someone may see you.” He whispered, “Sorry, I can’t help it.” Paul responded.

Jakob woke up. He had found an empty ally to sleep in the night before. He figured that he had been out for only three maybe four hours. He shook him self awake and got up. The streets were already filled with people. “Somewhere out there a winged person is just waiting for me to find them.” He mumbled to himself with a smile. He walked out of the alley with a little skip in his step and made his way along the sidewalk, following the crowd. He stopped to pick up a penny off the ground, “Hum, must be my lucky day.” He grinned. Then he happened to glance across the street where he saw a kid, no more the 18 rolling his shoulders in an odd way. Most other people wouldn’t think anything of it, but to an agent it was like an open book. It was possible that the kid had wings, not definite, but possible. Jakob commenced to following the family from the other side of the street. He needed to get them away from the crowd if he was going to do this. He began devising his plan.

Lex sat on a bench and pulled a bottle ofwater from his bag. He took a few gulps and returned it to the bag.

Okay, now just what am I doing here?

The question kept tugging at his mind. Did he even have a reason? Perhaps, he’d come here for nothing. Or maybe not.

He looked around at all the people; some carried shopping bags, some glanced his way, others ignored him. None of them seemed to be of much importance. Except one.

A short way up the street, Lex could see through breaks in the crowd a boy acting strangely…at least to him. He stood up trying to get a better view. He could see the black haired boy oddly rolling his shoulders. O a normal human, it would—

“Looks like he has a bad backache, doesn’t it?”

Lex whipped his head around. Beside him stood a pretty brunette. She giggled, seeing his surprised reaction. “Sorry to startle you.”

“It’s fine.” Lex said, turning back to watch the strangely acting boy.

“I’m Malorine. Andyou are…?”

“Kevin.” He lied. He hated lying, butt he had to keep his name scarce. Just in case. “Nice to meet you.”

The black haired boy began to move away and Lex began to follow. He hoped the girl didn’t follow him; but unfortunately for him, she did.

“Mind if I tag along?” she asked. “I’m not busy.”

Ugh…not again. “Should you be busy?”

“Yes, I should.”

Lex sensed a hint of seduction in her voice. He was trying hard not to appear too suspicious, and he probably wasn’t having much luck because when he looked back at her, he saw her eyes move between him and the black haired boy.

“Well, I kind of am.” He said.

“Spying?” she teased.

“No. nothing like that.” He stopped for a moment. “I’m sorry, but I must ask you not to follow me. I must do this job alone.”

Cerie sat across from the elderly man. He was a sweatered, gnarled looking fellow who would soon celebrate his eighty-fourth birthday. Professor Swhint was someone who she had lived beside daily for quite some time, but had always taken for granted. He took her in on the condition that she would hold a steady job at the shipyard in the other bay, and there she had flourished. Dr. Swhint's nephew Harry ran the yard, and Cerie's skills had caught his eye. It seemed to be a win-win situation for everybody. Cerie had a home and Harry Jones had a new worker that could really tow the line. When Cerie found her wings, she found out that there was a reason she was living with Dr. Swhint. He knew all she seemed to need to know about her wings. Cerie snapped back into the present suddenly as Dr. Swint's warm voice said "It's a pleasure to have tea, dear, but why today? You look as if someone used your awl as a hammer again."

Cerie began feebly, looking at the professor's knotted hands and thinking of all the knowledge he may have gained throughout his life. "I was wondering what you could tell me about...my feelings." Cerie paused for a moment, and then nearly erupted into a speech about the feelings of purpose inside of her. She finished with "and I've been thinking about leaving, but I don't know what good that would do, or if I would ever find anything out."

Dr. Swhint looked at Cerie with an amused smirk and lightly chuckled. "Ceres, tell me where you think you'd go. If you're looking for answers, how would leaving make them any easier to find? Have you been thinking about your beginning again?"

Cerie wondered how the professor knew her so well. She sipped the darjeeling and said "In fact, I have. I've been thinking a lot about home, and if I had the chance to return, whether I would take it or not. I guess what I'm trying to say is, I don't know why I have these wings. The feelings of purpose inside of me are overwhelming. Sometimes I wonder if I'm supposed to finish the fleet and leave, or travel into the city with Lex and find something else to do. Can you help me?"

The professor smiled knowingly and acted as if he was going to start a long story. Then he stopped and said "First, Ceres, make another pot of tea. You let this one get cold."

Jakob followed the family for a few more blocks before the entered a large furniture store. “This is my chance.” Jakob mumbled to himself. He quickly crossed over to the other side of the street and entered the store. He quickly found himself an employ, “Um excuse me sir, could you help me over here. I am uh looking for a new table for my wife, and I’m not sure what she’ll like.” The employ agreed and Jakob lead him to a group of tables over by the bathroom. “Now see, I’m not sure if she would like the wood or the glass table.” Jakob said as he quietly pulled out his switchblade and stabbed the guy several times in the back. Jakob dragged the body into the bathroom. Several minutes later Jakob emerged dressed in the employ’s cloths. He soon found the kid and his family. “Excuse me lady and gentlemen, my I have a word with you?”
-----------------------------------------------------
Paul and his family exchanged glances with each other before following the guy. Paul couldn’t help but look at the guy’s neck. It was scared with burns that went up onto his face. They followed the employ for a little before he stopped. “Is there some kid of problem?” Paul’s dad asked, “No, not at all.” The man responded. Paul didn’t know why but the way this guy talked sent a shiver down his spine. Something about his voice was slightly, off. “In fact just the opposite.” The man continued, “I am here to inform you that you are our one hundredth customer!” Paul and his family didn’t respond, “Please try and contain your enthusiasm.” the guy said sarcastically before continuing, “And as such you get to receive, for free, any item of choice from our stock room.” This started to get Paul’s mom excited. “Now if you will please just follow me I’ll lead you to our stock room.” The employ lead Paul and his family to the back of the store where there was a staircase going up. “Right up here folks.” Paul’s dad took the lead up the stairs until they came to a door. “Right through that door.” Paul’s dad opened the door and the group walked through it. They emerged on top of the roof of the building. “Hey this isn’t the stock room!” Paul’s dad yelled at the employ who had just come through the door, closing it behind him. “What’s the meaning of this!” Paul’s dad demanded. The employ turned and revealed that he now had a gun pointed at them. “You’re quite right sir, this is not the stock room, and I am not an employ.” An evil grin crossed his face.

Zeve kept his cool. Retraining the gun on the man, he turned himself slightly so that the creature had a clear view of the sword hilt over his shoulder. If either of them made any sudden moves, the agent knew he was much more than capable of destroying them both. Unless the thing had hidden powers and was feigning the terror evident in its voice.

“What are you?” he asked tensely. “Some Batgirl wannabe?’ He’d never seen the like, but surprise and fear were long gone from Zeve’s life.

“You’re asking me to leave?” Malorine’s eyes seemed to well up with tears. “How could you?”

Lex continued his maneuver through the crowds, tracking the black-haired boy. “Sorry.”

“Is that all you can say?” Why was she still following him? “You would ask a girl like myself to leave when she wants to spend time with you?”

Lex didn’t answer.

“What exactly—wait!”

But Lex was now running across the street. The boy had entered a shop and was soon followed by a strange looking man. Lex entered what appeared to be a furniture store. He pretended to be casually examining a large cherry wood cabinet while keeping the boy in his peripheral view.

“Excuse me, lady and gentlemen,” a voice said; causing Lex to turn his head to see who it belonged to. “may I have a word with you?”

“Is there some kid of problem?” asked the man standing next to the boy. Lex assumed he was the father.

“No, not at all. In fact just the opposite.” The employee answered. “I am here to inform you that you are our one hundredth customer!”

That sounds odd. Lex thought. He moved aound a tall shelf and peeked through a gap between it and another tall cabinet. He could see the employee. Messy hair burnt face…

Lex suddenly recognized him. It was the strange man that had followed the family into the store awhile ago. Was he really an employ? Lex became increasingly suspicious.

“Please try and contain your enthusiasm.” the employee continued, “And as such you get to receive, for free, any item of choice from our stock room.”

The employ turned and Lex caught a glimpse of something on the back of his shirt. Something thin and crimson.

Lex watched them enter the stock room. He walked around the shelf and walked briskly across the room. Trying hard to appear casual.. With a quick glance to make sure no one was watching, he entered the stock room.

“Right up here, folks.” He heard the employ say, “Right through that door.”

As they exited, Lex crept up to the door and listened.

He heard shouts.

“Blast Impact!”

The door was blown from its hinges.

Cerie drew the shade as the sun got higher in the sky with the approaching noon hour. It was midmorning. She sat back down across from Dr. Swhint, who sat looking at the little puffs of steam floating from his old teacup. "Now that you have fresh tea, Dr. Swhint, is there something you wanted me to know?"
"About what?" the professor joked. His mind was as sharp as the point of a compass. "Really, Ceres, I've been in the same place as you. Do you know how I learned so much about those wings?"
"Not really, professor, and I never could find a good enough reason to ask," Ceres reluctantly admitted this and nervously stirred her tea, sloshing it sloppily in her saucer.
"Well, the first thing you should know is that you should never"-the professor pointed and shook his finger for emphasis--"never neglect the pursuit of answers. If you have a question, ask it. If you have a hunch, follow through and see if it's a good one. It's better to invest a little and risk a little than to be careful and poor in knowledge."
Ceres nodded as Dr. Swhint continued. "I was a young professor at a university not far from here. I was on top of the world. Science was my world, and I would stay up all night sometimes studying and learning more. Sometimes, i would even neglect preparation for my classes and keep studying the new concepts and discoveries that seemed to be devouring me. Some of the colleagues at the university took notice of my appetite for learning and decided to sort of 'induct' me into their group. That's when I found out that the wings existed. It started out innocently enough, it seemed. We were just a tribe of curious men feeding on whatever information we could find. One night in late summer, we had a conference with a renowned scientist from out of the area...he from one of the big schools someplace far away. Anyway, he knew a lot about the wings, too. But there was something different about him, he was...cruel, crude. He never seemed to be rested, was edgy, do you know what I mean?"
Ceres nodded and said "His hunger was...something different? Somewhat frantic?"
"Yes, yes Ceres dear. Quite frantic. And he was entirely preoccupied with money, security, the economy, and what the wings might "mean" to the scientific community. A few people had disclosed to us in good faith and confidentiality that they were bearers, and he contacted one of them, though I cannot remember his name... Anyway, this particular scientist began to experiment on this young man, and though the man's condition was declining, the professor never stopped his tests. Eventually, the young man died. We were then sworn to secrecy and offered large sums of money to cover up the man's death. Of course, I was horrified. I declined the money and called in an anonymous tip. After this, my life was threatened. I swore to never speak another word, but I was demoted to an adjunct position within the university, and ended up leaving it entirely for another teaching job nearby after a professor emeritus had read and endorsed my journals on new technologies in air travel."
Ceres was speechless. That's why Dr. Swhint knew just what to watch for and who could be trusted. That's why Dr. Swhint knew so much. She wondered why she hadn't made the connection before between the professor and the scientists, knowing full well that both his background and his passion were science. Cerie gathered herself and asked, "So the feelings of purpose?"
Dr. Swhint cleared his throat and began again "After I left the other university, the bearers that had disclosed their gift needed protection. With my technical knowledge and big heart"-Cerie grinned at the professor-"I became their resource. I worked with my brother-in-law, Daniel Jones, and secured new identities for the bearers. Over time, I acquired some wealth from teaching and writing and was able to devote more time to research and to building this house. Throughout the years, bearers have come here for help and comfort, and I was always able to help in some way. The feelings of purpose were there and still are. You just need to find your niche. Knowledge is just as much of a gift as wings are. I was given the gift of knowledge of the wings, and I helped others. Now you can do your part. But"--Dr. Swhint patted Cerie's hand and smiled a little--"you don't need to fret about it. Just keep building your fleet for now. You'll find out soon."
Cerie smiled at the professor and thanked him for the tea. "I have much to think on, doctor, and some boards to sand. I best get to work."
The kind old gentleman shook his head and said "Just like me, you're a workaholic! Alright, dearheart, but keep your chin up and your brow straight."
Cerie walked back outdoors and resumed work, wondering if Lex had ever heard about the professor's roots as a scientist.

Jakob stumbled forward, nearly falling on his face, as something hard hit his back. He turned to see a man standing in the doorway that they came through. “Well this is just great!” Jakob said annoyingly, “Now the cops will have another body to worry about.” He had his gun pointed at the man and was about to shoot when he noticed there was no door. He looked on the ground and saw the door laying there. “How did you,” He cut himself off as a devilish smile slid across his face. “Ah, so that’s how this is going to be.” He took several steeps towards the newcomer. “So tell me, where do you hide them? Do you wrap them around your body and tie them in a little bow?” He shook his head, “No, you’re much too advanced for that. You can already use your powers. You’re probably one of those “dangerous” ones that are able to hide their wings.”

Paul’s eyes shot open at the mention of wings. He glanced at his dad who looked equally shocked. He noticed the guy with the gun glance back at them, “Bet you didn’t realize you weren’t alone did ya kid? There’s a whole lot of freaks like you out there.” he turned his attention back to the man who stood in the door way, “And it’s my job to bring them in.” “Not my son!” Paul’s dad yelled as he launched himself at the gunman, who quickly turned to his attacker. A gunshot sounded, and Paul’s dad fell to the ground, a pool of blood forming around him.
