I was a beta tester too - had RC-1 & RC-2 with no probs.

I did a fresh install using the network SP-2 install. I've had a few problems with my UPS unit & printer as well as some programs freshly installed that REFUSED to open (even after uninstalling/reinstalling) And i lost internet connection over the last few days till i figured out that XP now (SP-2 feature ??) shuts your NIC (network card) down to save power !! Today's been good so far (knock on wood)

BTW, Norton has released an update for their 2004 line of products that will allow the new Security Center in XP to recognize that it's installed and enabled. The 2003/2002 line of products will have a similiar update in the future.;)

Hey Holly, yes SP2 is out...Microsoft disabled active update for a day or two...but now its back up and runnin'...I'm waitin' to download cause i'm a 56k'er

How big was you guys download? 75 to 266 MB is a lil' too vague for me...I could handle up to about 85 MB but if its any more than that I'll have to take it somewhere that has broadband...

If you are running SP-1 and have updated your system on a regular basis, the SP-2 install will be around 30 - 75 MB.

In my case, having done a clean install of XP then installing SP-2, the install was closer to the 270 MB because it incorporates all of the updates/patches/etc. of SP-1a as well.

I would strongly suggest a clean install of XP and then install SP-2 IF you can - it's always the best way considering SP-2 is almost a new version of XP.

The link to SP2 on Microsoft site also contains the updates released in SP1, hence why it's over 200 MB in size, plus it includes everything relesed for it, which not every user will need.

hence why it said for network people to download it, even though a home user could also get it and install it fine.

Plus it would also save a bit on bandwidth.

That doesn't come cheap you know ;)

My computer is always kept updated so I hope the download isn't over 75mb. In fact, I hope it's smaller than that. Juno will disconnect me after I've been online for a certain amount of time regardless of whether the connection is active or not so I might lose my download in the process. I don't use any download managers either. Besides, I'm pretty sure that Microsoft won't let you download updates using a download manager. Do they have an option to order a CD? I know I ordered an update CD once but I didn't know if they have one with SP2 on it or not. If so, I might just order it. But then again, I'd like to get the service pack as soon as possible so I might just try to download it anyway.

You know, I've searched Microsoft's site and have ran Windows Update, and I haven't been able to find Service Pack 2 anywhere. Anyone care to give a link? By the way, I don't want a network setup. I want a setup for a home computer. Also, it has to be for XP Pro! Thanks!

The only links to Microsoft re: SP-2 are for the network install.;)

Check out this site for more details about SP-2:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=windowsxpsp2

The only way to get SP-2 now is to have Automatic Update feature in Windows turned ON. You will receive an alert when Microsoft is ready for you to download the SP. I've heard date of Aug 25th for availability via Windows Update site for XP Pro.

And yes, there will be the option of ordering by CD, probably by next month (not available just yet as per Microsoft).

Just an FYI -

Programs that are known to experience a loss of functionality when they run on a Windows XP Service Pack 2-based computer -

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;884130&Product=windowsxpsp2

Keep checking back periodically over the next couple of weeks as there is bound to be more. I must say after doing a fresh install of XP then installing SP-2 i've had some issues, both hardware and software related. Whether it is because of SP-2 is something i'm trying to verify.

I just have to say that Microsoft has once again screwed things up. Service Pack 2 will NOT be going onto my computer. I installed it and have had nothing but problems, crash after crash....at first I thought I was running windows ME, lol......Well, Time to reload my system again, I'll be back in a few hours.

Works fine here too. Only problem is that I had a severe crash the other day and lost my Windows install. My registry corrupted, then I got multiple_isp_calls errors. I reinstalled fresh with SP2 on it, instead of installing SP2 over the RC, and now all is fine.

Maybe a clean install of Windows XP + SP2 wont bring up to much fuss :)
Yeah but who wants to format and reinstall everything when you have like 50 programs to put back on the computer. I've also heard other bug reports about SP2. I think I might wait a couple of months until they can get the bugs worked out before I try it. I don't like formatting and reinstalling XP all the time. It gets to be a huge pain! :|

I think MS needs to go back to the drawing board and try SP2 again.......I did another clean install (which by the way I did the first time) and I'm still crashing constantly....it appears that Explorer and the Systray keep closeing and restarting over and over......I just can't seem to win here.....I guess I'll be booting over to Win 2k for the time being until MS can get things right....

You have some other problem, although I'm not sure what it is. It's not the SP, as I don't have any of these problems with mine.

Everything works fine without service pack 2, I have a new HDD in this system so that's not it, everything tests out fine on it......I'm going to do some tweaking and see if I can get it running, but for now I'm booting 2k.....The system came with XP Home, but I installed Pro on it because I use Remote Desktop alot and it doesn't work very well with Home......I think I will Ghost my drive and try the XP Home and see how it works with SP2......

I'm really suprised how, in my case, i can run SP-2 Release Candidates 1 & 2 with no problems whatsoever (over SP-1(a)) but do a fresh install of XP and install SP-2 RTM and have the problems i had ??

After a week of playing around with it, i've overcome the printer/UPS problems, all programs installed after the install of SP-2 work fine and except for the first reboot after SP-2 i've had no booting problems (had to use "last known good configuration" option)
