  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

And i'll try to put up good arguments on it ;-)

Firstly, as this is a christians' forum :priest: , i'll say that MS's approach is against christianism (although i don't care anymore, i think i crossed the limit between christianty and atheism.... while i still have had a christian education).

Second, the quality of Windows is very doubtful, when compared to linux.

Third, i'll continue this thread when I receive some reply that this is not déjà-vu.

well i am a avid mac user and have used macs for 15 years...it was my first computer (a mac classic) and now i have a 15" Flatpanel iMac...i dont like windows because of how they do things. They have a really buggy system more than any system i know, they do not come up with there own idieas they have to steal from others...like apple (PROVEN) And just hard to use and just overall crappy.

(IMO)

I'm a windows user, I wont' use linex because it doesn't support most of my hardware and because it's just not feasable when it's more of a hassle than windows when it comes to setting it up and learning how to use it is complicated and not worth my time. I want to be able to sit down and use my computer and not have to debug everything.

I'm a Windows XP Pro user. Been using it for a year now, and it works beautifully. I can count on one hand the number of times the system has crashed for non-hardware related problems (I had a run of freeze ups because the sound chip on my motherboard died).

I don't use Linux, partially because there is no real need for me to use it, but mostly in reaction to some Linux people I've met. Many (and I am not saying all) are like overzealous Jehovahs Witnesses. They try to force Linux down your throat, and no matter how many times you keep saying "no!", there they are. Booting up your computer? There they are, right behind you. "Oh, Windows? You should use Linux." Maybe this is just my bad experiences at Lan parties....

I don't use Mac, mostly because I have no need to use one. All my programs that I like to use run on Windows, and I don't particularly care how MS does business. At least, not enough to rush out and buy a brand new, completely different system.

I use everything I can get my hands on :D but personally I prefer Linux. Honestly Linux is easy to install now, dare I say easier to install than windows now? You need to be running some real exotic hardware these days for it not to be compatible with the OS. Excluding modems of course because brainless (winmodem) modems are a dime a dozen and manufacturers like to shove that junk in computers to shave a buck for their profit; Winmodems only work with Windows.

I use Windows alot of course. I’ve spent a lot of class time for Windows and have made a lot of money from Windows systems. I don’t have a ball and chain on me of course. I also like Mac alot. I’ve never had one but I’ve worked (work/friends) with them alot. Since OS X came out I’ve been very tempted to get one because OS X is a UNIX clone like Linux is.

I’m mainly just so amazed with Linux now though. Even NASA has been playing around with distributions of Linux for projects. Imbedded Linux is absolutely on fire now. Extreme Linux is a powerhouse. Mandrake and Red Hat have become user friendly. This is the OS with by far the brightest future potentially.

I’m coming to your work and to your house and deleting your Windows OS and installing Linux in it’s place :p You have no choice :p If you find it useless for your needs that’s just tooo bad :p I’m shoving it down your throat!!! *Puts on steel briefs*

[Criticism]I just find it a laugh when I see people behave like this. It’s especially sad when you see this mentality displayed in a Christian forum.[/criticism]

My hobby makes me money, too. (Web Design) :)

Anyway, I use Windows at school, at work, and at home. If you are a more advanced computer user, you need to use Windows Pro (it doesn't matter which version).

I will admit that Windows in some aspects is a little candy-coated, but it is the easiest OS to obtain software and hardware for. Windows is my personal preference, but that is mainly because of my limited exposure to other Operating Systems.

Speaking of windows, I hear that Microsoft dropped the ball with the next release of the consumer grade Windows OS. They trashed it and are rewriting it from the ground up now. You see they want to release a version of Windows every two years (Been 2 years now) but now at this point it will be an additional 2 years (2+2=4YEARS total since XP) from now before we see a new release of Windows. So there is a chance that two years from now we… may… have the next best thing for windows. I'd really like to say something good for Windows concerning the future, even just out of pittys sake, but I just don't honestly see anything.

Meanwhile Steve Jobs admitted they have a version of Mac OS X that runs on a regular PC. No one has said that this will be released of course since this could kill the Apple hardware business but Apple is gearing up for something VERY big this year on the Internet. They are buying up servers like mad (not Microsoft Server 2003’s) with vast amounts of data space and bandwidth. Can you guess? I think I know.

Yes, they are, and I'm glad of it - begone, Win32 API! :)

That'd be  . I think I'd be much more interested in the Mac OS if I didn't have to buy all-new Apple hardware.

Yeah but that is major lost revenue for Microsoft. They spent 2 years developing a system that they could not release so they threw it in the trash. In 2 years what will they have? Not a great way to hold consumer confidence. 2 more years is a very long time when they have such great competition nipping at their heels.

But this is only hype. It’s what some software companies do and especially Microsoft. Most of what is known of this is speculation. If this comes to fruition then this is a boon for file swappers but how many times can one reinvent the same old wheel?

Yes it has its uses. Windows is great for video games, Mac is perfect for video/graphic editing and UNIX/Linux for server side and work stations (as far as for just PC's). It would be great to boot them all at the same time on my 1.2 terahertz computer some day :D

Yes - bad, very bad. I think that's why they totally changed their policy and gave out the details of the system 3 yrs before its completion date - that way they can say, "See? Just wait - we'll have those goodies too." .

I'm a software developer, and I've been studying the object model and workings of the Avalon graphics system for a couple of months now. It's like flintstones cars (Win32) vs racecars (Avalon). Avalon's graphics system is HW accelerated and similar to Flash.

Being a computer consultant and experienced with Mac, Linux, and Windows...each has its up and downsides.

Windows 2k and XP can be good, but a few things must be done to keep it good:
A good antivirus w/ frequent updates (norton or mcafee 8)
A good firewall (zonealarm)
Frequent system updates (this can be set to run automatically)
Spybot to clean and immunize against adware/spyware
Not installing things recklessly

Win 95, 98, ME aren't worth the trouble.

I really like Fedora Core 1 (Linux), its loaded with software and adding more software is quite easy after installing apt and Synaptic (apt gui), which is just a matter of knowing where to find the right rpms and installing them in the right order.

OS X is very reliable, robust, and easy to use. You just have to know about versiontracker.com when you're looking for software.

I like all of them but then again, being in the business for many years now does give me a lot of exposure. Win2K and WinXP if tweaked just right are possibly the stablest Microsoft OS's I've ever used. Win95a and WinMe being the worst, but being built on the kernel32, that's to be expected.
In Linux I'm enjoying XandrOS and RedHat and for the Mac, OS X is perfect for graphics and an awesome OS, in my opinion. Mac OS 8 - 9 were pretty good as well. Would love to get a version of OS X on my pc, but I'm still waiting since I heard about that years ago.

well, I am a windows user at home, but on my laptop and at school I use Linux. I must ad,mit Linux is MUCH easier to use and in general is better than windows. the difference is that windows is established, EVERYTHING works with it. if it didn't, it would be obselete. So I use XP pro for now at home, though I'm considering Dual booting it with Linux, just for fun. my school added about 100 linux computers last year, and though they have been extremely unstable up till just a couple months ago that was mainly because the people administrating the network were incompetent. It is really nice though, and I installed it on my OLD compaq presario laptop just for fun and to get used to it. I've just begun to play with it and as to learning to use it I have friends willing to help with any questions. so there is my take on the issue, muddled though it may be

I must agree, Winme was very bad; repulsively bad. I liked win 95 alot (better than 3.1 and long before) but that is defiantly obsolete and has been for a long time. Microsoft recently deemed win98SE obsolete by refusing to continue updating it. I’m still running 98SE on my game rig but I’ll be building a new rig with XP on a dual boot this year. First I’m building an 802.11g wireless network for my DSL connection that is on its way, and then I’ll build a game system for XP/Linux.

XP has been stable as far as not having system halting crashes. The GUI has never been 100% stable though and sometimes needs a reboot or two to work right. I’ve had XP since they first started preinstalling XP on new computers (before it hit the shelf) when I bought a laptop and I have not reinstalled it yet. My biggest concern is with its very bad reputation concerning security; it’s not a secure OS at all. This is a leading reason I often rely on Linux since it is a very secure system. I wont even start an IRC client with XP and it’s really not a good idea to do so. I only do that if I’m using Linux at the front of my network forwarding through my SAMBA server for protection.

Right now I’m running Mandrake and Red Hat. I’ve been running Red Hat since like version (bought) 4.1 or something but have been using Mandrake alot since last year. Most likely I’ll go with (pay subscription) Mandrake on the new system since I’ll be building a system with a 64bit (X2 maybe) CPU and Mandrake supports this. I’m also thinking of using my current desktop computer as a DMZ on my network with a Linux distribution; heh they will never get through.

linux does support a lot of hardware and using *nix (yes just the console) example freebsd is a great OS ihave my own web site powered by apache, windows is good to use for a GUI and for using applications such as putty.exe, and tightvnc.com does a nice application so that you can remotely access any other boxes that you have, errors with windows is normally 99.9% the users fault, and yes windows does suck we all know that but its still has it uses

Oh? That would be cool if it’s true. I heard last month from Leo Laporte that they were going to stop supporting it in mid January but it could be possible they are reversing their decision on this. Guess I’ll need to look into this, but I have not heard anything different as of yet.
