Windows 8.1 Update 1

if you are running windows 8. i would wait awhile to upgrade, as the new software will completely replace the original software.. in some cases people have had a problem with their systems because some of the drivers are missing.. i was going to upgrade this new laptop. but, after reading all of the reviews.. i see that there are quite a few that have problems, and they are all to do with drivers..
in some cases the computer won't even boot up..
if you are wanting to bypass the metrosuite on start up, and go directly to a desktop complete with start button. there are several applications that do this.. although i find startisback to be the least intrusive, and extremely customizable.. and it can be downloaded online.. it gives 30 days free, and then it is 3 dollars to keep it.. it also allows you the settings that will get rid of those pesky charms that pop out of the side and four corners..
blessings..

And now for the bad news,

Windows 8.1 will cease being supported for updates in May 2014 (yes 2014 aka this year)

Yes, so you will need to apply the Windows 8.1 update 1 patch ASAP to get continued support via Windows Update in the future.

Original Windows 8 users will get support until Jan 2016 but, what happens after that is anyones guess. I guess you will have to either go through the 8.1 upgrade then 8.1 update 1 and then what ever other updates etc happen between now and then or, go out and buy the latest version of Windows and install it over Windows 8. :o

That makes no sense. If you're gonna cut off anything, cut off Vista.

Oh well, just as we start to get back to normal in Windows land (if it ever is normal) update 2 appears to be sprouting forth.

Well come October it looks as though the start menu returneth possibly. That, along with windowed TIFKAM "nee Metro" apps and sane shutdown options makes it what Windows 8 should have been two years ago - or is that Windows 7 Update 5?

So it looks like major updates and/or reinstalls every six months. Hmm, where did they get the bi yearly updates from... Ubuntu?, nah surely not. No, i doubt it, in the same way I doubt the Windows 7 desktop wasn't inspired by the KDE 4 desktop.

I wonder whats next?

Maybe the Windows logo gets replaced by a polar bear or even..... a penguin!

Perhaps there might be more desktops with penguins on before long!

Not to be confused with "service packs", which we no longer have... /s

Windows 8.1 is a 3.5GB download for each and every OEM machine, and that's the reason I've declined to upgrade any Win8 machine I've had. I've got to think that many a multi-station business thinks the same way. It seems that MS is making a lot of decisions that leave businesses out in the cold.

Well I guess Windows 8 has come from the Ballmer days and guess Windows 9 will be of the same era more or less so I doubt if things will become any better before Windows 10 or 3-4 years into the future say. Having said that it looks like 8 is going in a backwards direction but better for it so a case of back to the future. But as I've said before it looks like MS are trying to push towards a subscription based future.

It almost seems as though they're trying to make the upgrades to 8 inaccessible so that 9 will be more desirable when it appears. I suspect 9 will be good, according to their fairly well established odd/even track record so far, but who knows.

It does seem they want to get into subscriptions, as they are doing with Office already now. But subscriptions are not incompatible with making upgrades readily available for deployment. Something else seems to be going on here.
