  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I know nothing about computers, but some tech show I was listening to on
the radio said do not even attempt to upgrade from XP to W7.

I have been using XP Pro forever...if I switch to W7 am I going to have
a tough time getting used to it? I really dread the change and having to
relearn things...but I need new computers.

Its possible to put XP on a new computer. I just got done two days ago F11 my vista. It takes about 16 hours to put the programs back on. Lots of bump along the way.

Oh dear - shades of the windows old problem: its just done a mega crash! Seems that it doesn't like the latest bit of software. Removed the software and its talking to me sweetly again. How nice! My blood pressure has reduced, my desire to through the whole blooming let through my study window (ugh that word again) is diminishing. My heart feels as if it is slowing down and my duaghter is asking me about verbs and prepositions - in Hebrew! Life is, possibly, good!

Oh Lord why don't we use chisel and stone anymore?

My two favorites are "what now," and "aw s--t." I tried to load Linux to my old computer, but there was a MS program to even block that. Aw blank!

I'm pleased that I have found how to add to the fonts - just drag and drop - so my 250 with Win 7 has now gone up to 864 as I put my others in as well!

Bit scary though because they didn't have the one I've been using on my paper and it was all out of line etc! However its solved. Praise the Lord! Mind you I'd hate to write a long paper with chisel and stone (wonder how we'd do on here?).

MS sent me some MS 7 updates for my Vista and it draged it down to a crawl. That is why I had to F-11 my computer. Like thanks, but no thanks. Vista needs at least 10 or more Gigabits of Ram. I see people who are building custom computers putting on at least 10 Giga bits of Ram.

Laptops with 10G of ram are likely to be very rare indeed! My laptop is dual core, which helps.

I'll see how it goes for a few days and if I don't like it then I'll re-load the XP mirror version I made. Easy, just a few clicks of the button to wipe one and transfer the other off a sata drive where it is strored at present.

I was speaking of the new custom built Desk tops. They are quad core with 10 plus Gigabyte Ram. I think they have to have a special Mother boards for that. A custom builder said that is what it takes to run Vista or Windows 7 without problems. Mine is also only dual core with 6 Gigabytes of Ram. Slow boat to China. What now! Aw sh--!

Only computers with quad and 10 plus Gigabyte Ram are able to handle Vista and Windows 7 well. Other than that,PATIENCE is a virtue.

Seriously... don't tell my wife this. Her little 5+ year old single core 1800Mhz puter runs Win7 as fast if not faster than XP... with only 2 gigs of RAM. This posted for the sake of clarity, as not everyone has a puter that seems to run as muddy as yours. Come on... 10 gigs of memory to work properly on Vista/Win7... there is something wrong with this picture.

That is what the custom builders are doing. When Vista first came out I bought one. It was fast as lighting then, but the more up dates the slower it ran. I have had to remove a bunch of programs to get it to move faster. The only way to get it to run faster is to strip it down to bare bones. That would also include the updates and Norton.

If she is running old software with Windows 7 that would explain why it is working so fast. The new software has a lot of junk code. A lot. A editors worst nightmare of junk code. What now! Aw sh--.

That is what the custom builders are doing.

That's all fine and good if they need to encode video using the 64bit version, most (99% of the rest of us) are fine with 2-4gigs of memory.

That could very well be... I always disable unneeded services. Also don't buy pre-built pre-loaded puters if you can... all the builders load up/install a ton of junk. Best bet there if you get your puter that way is to format and install manually, then, only add what you want.

That would also include the updates and Norton.

Doing away with Norton is probably the best performance enhancement you could do. I've been very happy with KIS (Kaspersky Internet Security), light on your system resources, accurate virus detection, new updates faster than anyone else out there, family pack license... The main thing there... give Norton the boot! That alone will make any version of Windows run better. :)

Hey JohnD glad to see to you are still with us - and providing some great grahpics. Well, it did another major crash last night and I got it up and running about an hour later.

It's 9.30am here, now, so we'll see how the day is going. I managed to get it to accept the web-cam, though it was very reluctant. I almost expected a punch to come out of the screen (like one of your graphics from a while ago, JohnD) and a Bill Gates type of voice screaming at me out of speakers: why don't you take that web cam and stuff.... well I'll let your imagination run wild with that one, but I do not think it was likely to be terribly polite.

Win7 comes with some 300+ fonts - none of which is the one I am using to write my thesis. When I opened the thesis file, yesterday, to do some more it was all over the place - Microsoft had substituted a different font! Oh, (rude words), thought I. Then , in a calmer time, I thought, I know what, I'll load all my fonts on to Win7 - easy answer. I looked and looked and asked the infernal machine how to add fonts and just got a really silly reply, in effect: fonts! FONTS! why the (rude words) do you want more fonts, I've given you 300+ for free!!! Anyway, whether I should have, or not, I took exception to this and tried the old drag and drop with my 800+ fonts into the fonts folder on the machin,e and waited. It made a few impolite coughing noises, spat out a couple of fonts it ddn't like and objected that it already had some and why did I want to replace them? Well, what could I say? Having be screwed up by Gates' lot I took enormous joy in pressing the button and ticking the box that said load my fonts - even if yours are better! Now my thesis has gone back to how it should be. Thesis? Crikey, I must go! But a few more adventures of the English Win7 Saga, first...

Then there's DVB-T stick. I did get the thing to recognise it. At last, I thought, I have conquered Microsoft, yipppeeeeeee!!!! Should have know there would be a punishment for forcing the web-cam down Gates' throat - it screwed up the stick software and spat it out. Be warned Microsoft - there's another on the way when the post office get back to work. Gates' must have know this was happening and timed his Win7 to coincide with lots of people wanting replacement tings 'cos Win7 is not very kind and rejects lots so folk have to order more, if they can get on the internet, of course. The posties here are on a three day week this week - it'll just take then 4 weeks to actually do the work and deliver the post! Fight for the right to pretend to work fellas, that's what I say!

Anyway, then there's the mouse. A Microsoft own brand ready for Vista. Right thought I, that should be a doddle. Well Microsoft wanted to screw up my life some more so spat that one out, too! That is going back to the shop when next I travel into the big conurbation here (for you guys in the US that's a large village - we don't have a city here). I wonder if I'll get to the big village before the postmen return to work - mmmm have to pray about that.

So, here endeth day two of having Win7 more to follow!

It s now 13.30hrs, here.

Since I last posted the following has happened: itunes doesn't boot up; my back up drive I can see in Windows explorer but it refuses to run the program to tell it what to back up. Ceedo - linked with the back up drive - loads but doesn't do anything beyond the front window. System Restore says there's a problem and it cannot run. Bluetooth has packed up. And of course IE8 packed up yesterday!

watch for more - there's still many more hours in this day!

Finally, some one who can relate to the compatibility issues Ive had. My software works, but then again that depends on what you call working.
