William Hague wrote an excellent biography on this man.

He is one of Britains longest ever serving Primeministers and in the eyes of history one of the best.

His father was also a PM during the Seven years war out of which GB Ltd did very well thankyou.

Pitt was opposed to the war against the American colonies and the heavy handed approach that led to the revolution in the first place. The loss of the colonies led to the Lord North administration perishing in its wake. Pitt came to be PM at only 24 years of age. He was a masterful political operator and was to command the political scene in Britain over the next 2 decades.

His major achievements in my view were

1) the restoration of Britains finances after the costly war in America. And the introduction of a sensible tax regime
2) Also the building of the best navy in the world which was to rule the waves during the Napoleonic Wars and through much of the next century and to facilitate the seizure of key Dutch and French and Spanish colonies. Also to guard the channel against French invasion durin the Napoleonic war when the French army was totally dominant
3) He was a personal friend of Wilberforce and provided the encouragement that focused Wilberforce on the abolition of the slave trade despite the considerable vested interests arrayed against this cause in the UK.

What do people think of William Pitt and his contribution?
