Is it easier to cook for yourself now that your single? Or would you rather eat out?

I find that I still tend to cook for two people, and wind up either freezing portions, giving some of what I prepare to neighbors, or *gasp* throwing food out altogether.

And then there are those times when some folks treat me to a meal, either at a restaurant, or one they've prepared themselves.

I'd like to hear from both widows and widowers on the subject. Well? What say you?

I hate cooking now. Coming up with ideas is a pain. I don't have time because of the kids schedules. Takeout would be easier...but I can't afford it and it isn't as good for the kids (or me...but not concerned about that).

Hi blackribbon, methinks you need a great big (((((hug)))))! :pink:

I used to make casseroles in a 9x13 inch pan... tamale pie, lasagna... and I'd include mom and dad in that in the past. But now, here I sit eating shortbread cookies for dessert... dinner was a sirloin burger. Lately I've been involved in church stuff, especially writing for a newsletter, so I understand "busy!"

The crockpot is my best friend. However, I have a 13 year old who dislikes everything that is not made of sugar or takeout right now. If she doesn't eat it the first time, no reason to put away the leftovers. She doesn't even eat the stuff she used to eat when daddy was alive.

I'll take that hug...but I think I really need a day off. Kind of got one today but not in a good way...took the car in to get checked before driving the kids across the country for Easter...it needs $2000 worth of work (several things just have worn out at the same time)...so I'm broke and have no car...

However, God still is in charge and providing...

Good morning blackribbon, crockpot food, that sounds good, especially in the rainy weather we're having over this way.

You know, I have a car that's 5 years' old, and it's good on gas, but I try not to drive it too much. I've taken a few trips but with hotels and such, and that became expensive last year. Plus I'm busy with church now (and that includes Easter) so I'm staying put!

I have my 22 yr. old still home so when I am here, and not babysitting for my daughter at her house.which is usually 3 times a week,I try to have something substancial. He tends to eat fast food otherwise.I send leftovers with him to work.If I was by myself I think I would fix sandwiches which could get real old.I am not into cooking even though I raised 5 children.I think I got burned out on cooking.

I have been widowed for a very long time and remarried, so this may not apply to me. But I never minded cooking after my husband passed. I still don't now that my present husband lives in a different state.

I make a big pot of a couple dishes and eat it through out the week. I put them in individual serving containers and take some to work with me for lunch and eat the other when I get home. Two cooked meals on the weekends will last me all week. Saves on time and money.

Hi Rememberme, it's such a different life for me, I haven't children, but instead lots of nieces/nephews. I'm an OK cook and it appears that I'll be doing some food prep for meetings/gatherings at church.

I eat sandwiches too... it's easier; if I want them hot, I'll toast them in a pan, like tuna salad with melted cheddar cheese is really good. Of course I prepare an actual hot meal now and then... I try to eat lots of veggies, but have a penchant for sweets that I have to curb on what seems to be a daily basis.

Hi c1ners, welcome... I've done that, prepare 2-3 days' worth of food... for instance, even though I try to watch the red meat, I'll make a pot roast and put a bunch of vegetables in it. Or, I'll prepare enough chicken to last a couple of meals.

I'm with you on how much money is saved by not eating out. But the thing is that sometimes I get tired of my own food and busy work in the kitchen; it seems like I'm cleaning in that particular room more than anywhere else in the house!
