  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I can only hope I would choose Christianity too, as I can't imagine being any other way. I've pondered this question briefly myself. I was lucky to be born into a Christian family, although my parents do not pray aloud and we never attended church. I do not even know my brothers religion, if he has one or not, so fortunately I have become closer to God than I might have not otherwise.

More on your question...there is really no way to really know.

The real question you need to ask yourself is this: Was it your choice to choose Christianity or were you chosen for Christianity?

You hit the nail on the head. I'll remember if I ever get asked this question I'll just talk out of Ephesians 1 and give them no room to maneuver. It's sharper than any two-edged sword.

I would have to agree with mattlock and trentlogain, I believe God chose me and you because he has a specific role for us to play in life it may be big or it maybe small but it is equally as important, its more of a case of us accepting the call or rejecting it. I'm the only Christian in my family but I know God put certain people in my life to help me reach a point of commitment to Him, He even made it possible for me to leave home at 15 to stay in the city where I am now as my parents were moving away and I know if I'd gone with them I would never have committed my life God as I ave now.
Hope this helps

The Ephesians 1 is a great idea. God chooses us to carry out His plan. The greatest message you can give someone though is your own personal testimony. First, people can't argue with that. More importantly though, it lets people know that God is real.

There are Christians in India, and Pakistan and Thailand and China (heavly perscuted in China) etc. Maybe you would have been one of the few to know Christ if you were born there.

To get to the heart of the question though, I'd have to say there are MANY reasons to be Christian over all of the other religions.

1. Jesus the Christ was the ONLY person on this earth to be able to claim divinity and proove it by the fulfillment of HUNDREDS of prophesies & miracles.

2. Jesus gave us the Holy Spirit, so that we can know/discern the truth. I know that my bible is truth and the true word of God. That opening of the eyes comes from the Holy Spirit that is in me.

3. Jesus was never sinned. (Did you know Mohammad was a pedophile?, Mary Baker Eddie "healed herself 3 days after an injury" is a copy cat of Jesus, L. Ron Hubbard said if he wanted to "really make money, I'd start a religion".)

4. It's the only religion that doesn't promise that when you become Christian that your life will be better. Instead it teaches you how to have peace through your crazy life in the hope of the future (heaven). Others tell you that you can achieve "clear" or "enlightenment" here on earth. Others (Islam) promise 72 virgins to the man in heaven, but the woman is nothing more than a tool to the man... less than an animal.
Chrisitianity teaches that all are created equal, men in the image of Christ, women as his help mate, made in His image, out of the SIDE of man. Not over him (from his head) and not under him (from his feet)... but from his side as a help-mate. Equal but with different qualities to benefit each other.

We teach that we are in a sinful world, and we have to live in it, but this is not our home. Our home is in heaven. We need to respect this place we're in and love the people around us, lead them to our Christ when we can. The things of this world should not worry us thought, because we know what lies ahead. In the end of this war we're the winners. We know the end of the story. Just enjoy our life and live it for Christ while we're here.

There's more, but these are the main ones and I'll start rambeling. So I'll quit here. :)

Well I can't really help you as I believe if you are a Christian you were predestined to be one. If not then you were not. I only chose Christ because He predestined me to.

Lets not kid ourselves, you are i were chosen but not singled out for Salvation while others were intentionally left out. we were all chosen unless you think that some were created for hell and others for heaven. that doesn't make sense. lets not take Romans 8 out of context and lead this young man astray.

Romans 8 is in the proper context in the way FJ used it, imho. Or would you rather have this young man lead astray into believing that God's will and sovereignty is second to mans?

John 3:16 "whoever believes in him shall not perish". If it doesn't mean what is says then what does it mean?

John 3:16 "whoever believes in him shall not perish". If it doesn't mean what is says then what does it mean?
It means exactly what it says. That's not the focus though. The focus is WHY do they believe?

Jhn 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see (know, comprehend) the kingdom of God.

Jhn 6:44 No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw (drag) him: and I will raise him up at the last day.

If these verses don't mean what they say, what do they mean?

OK we both agree that the Bible means what it says.

Passage 2 Peter 3:9:

9The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

OK what does the word all mean in this passage?

The word means everyone. It's a difficult passage on it's own, but when looked at in the context of other scripture I think the meaning is clear. God does not delight in the destruction of the scoffers and sinners to come (not willing that any should perish) and this is a sign of exactly how much He loves us as humans, even those He has not selected/elected, that it pains Him to punish those in the end.

OK so we both agree on that too:). So what was it we disagreed on, I dont remember now.

Wait a minute, didn't see the "not selected" in your statement till now. what do you mean by that?

I mean that God loves all of humanity, for He created us, and it pains Him to know that there will be punishment for those that are not the select of God (or elect if you prefer).

did we get off track here? all i was saying was God does not want anyone to perish and forgiveness through his Son is available to everyone and anyone who asks for it. No prequalifications or pre anything is necessary.
