It is a fullfilment of prophecy for one, for two, it is a sign of humiliation, for three, it was a test of obediance.

(sorry, i can't cut and paste scripture, and I don't have enough time to research the scripture, but you can do it on your own time. I suggest getting a copy of "Jon Courson's" commentary on the New testiment.)

There was also the issue of the misguided expectations that the Jewish people had of the Messiah. Their interpretation of OT Messianic prophesies was that the Messiah would come and become a leader that would lead the people of Palestine out of the thumb of oppression through outside rule and would lead them to world prominence. Jesus was to be no part of this misconception, since His work was to lead people to freedom through grace and to release them through fulfilment of the Law. So, Christ did not want to cause undue problems with this earlier in His ministry. Some He tells to go off and reap the harvest, like the woman at the well in John 4. I still dont understand why Jesus wouldnt want more people knowing that He had been healing these people. I'd think that Jesus would want His sheep to know how their shepard was.
Another thing, there are parts where He tells them not to tell anyone, than others where He tells them to go tell their people all that God has done for them.
Why does He do this?
