Besides the super intellectual answer of "because he was a heretic," I gather Luther was condemned because he didn't believe you needed to work a system to earn salvation.

I thought Luther spoke against the selling of indulgences in the church of that time. His 95 Thesis?? Perhaps that happened much earlier.
