Reading a NIV passage in the Sabbath School Quarterly 10 years ago was what started me questioning what the SDA church was teaching. It was about adultery and the KJV made it clear it was decidedly to be turned from while the NIV used the word "should be" turned from, making it an optional thing. We questioned our pastor at the time and he told us we were just being too nit picky....
I use to attend an ultra conservative SDA church in the hills. We had about 150 members, but only 40-75 on any given sabbath. I thank and praise God for leading me to that church as I was growing in the faith. A couple times we sent whole boxes of quarterly study guides back to the conference because they were just too bad. They had so many errors, and other denominational POPULAR pastors commenting in them. This was in the 90s. I have never followed the quarterly because I have always looked at it as a way to take my mind off my daily devotion, a distraction. Every sabbath I would have plenty to say and I would always bring a SOP quote or two, praying that God would give me an opening to read at least one quote which was always in context with the study guide.
Nit Picky is right. When a pastor tells me to read along as he reads from a counterfeit translation and me with my KJV I get lost. Some sermons were so deep, at the time, that when I got lost I was lost for the rest of the sermon. These forums are my church now. I am tired of the lovey dovey peace and safety gospel being preached from every pulpit in every denomination. I have been rebuked many times, and the last time I attended one of the local churches here what a fiasco.
