People who are disquieted with prepping are actually uncomfortable with the idea that social structure could go sideways, that "normal" is not guaranteed.

Opposition to prepping comes from the same psychological place as opposition to legal concealed carry - they want so bad for the world to be free of muggers, rapists, and violent criminals . . . that they wish & wish with all their might & when that doesn't work, they pretend the world doesn't contain villains and anybody prepared to face villains is irrational. You can argue with them till you are blue in the face, but their wish-think doesn't require logic so it is usually a lost cause.

There are a lot of "crisis preppers" here in SC. The shelves are bare of water. Roads are out. Flooding, More rain is coming.
Everyone is a prepper. Now we are seeing real hoarding.

Prepping reminds people that things can go wrong, people don't like that. Some people hate buying life insurance or writing a will, same reason it's reality. Many people thrive on a huge normalcy bias, anything that intrudes on that is to much to consider.

Our society specializes in creating sheeple with a normalcy bias, they are much easier to control. Just as long as they have their Miley Cyrus, a functioning EBT card and latest gossip and cultural weirdness to keep them happy they will do as they are told. One of the things I always ask people who talk to me about moving to North Idaho, prepping or both is this. What will your neighborhood, your city and your state be like if the electricity and water get turned off for 3 days.

The trigger event, be it EMP, a solar storm, a huge earthquake, a massive eruption at Yellow stone, a nuclear exchange, All would change life quickly and for a very long time and your chances of survival very radically based on where you live and have you prepped.

This line of thought scares people a lot, and so they pretend the world will be as it is forever....which history disagrees with.

It scare me too and I know it is not reality that things will go on like they are now. I don't think I will be one to make it. And that scares me.:(

WE all get scared at times, but we know that we must put our trust in the Lord.

Do you mind if I use parts of this as a quote in a book?

For me, and I do not know any preppers nor am I one. To me, there is a difference, in being prepared and even well preepared and going overboard. For example, a difference in have food stored up and having whole rooms that are nothing but extras of EVERYTHING one could POSSIBILY need There is a difference in knowing how to hunt for food and taking too much. Number one it is illegal, but more than that we are to take care of the creation God gave us and that means keeping a balance of our needs and keeping a healthy enicosystem.

By no means am I saying that all preppers are taking it too far in ANY way, but that is just what I think of when I think of prepping is going all out more than just being prepared.

To us, we prep enough to keep us going until we can attain self sufficiency. That would likely be 3 growing seasons.
So our goal is to have basic needs for 3 years. Food, water, shelter, clothing, cash, and fuel.... whatever else.
We are there now. We also have enough to feed strangers who may come our way.
I cannot imagine what too much would be.

The recent winter snow storm that hit the east coast reminds me why I like to be prepared. My sister in law posted pictures on Facebook of the empty shelves in Walmart as the last minute preppers went out and searched for what they need. It is better to have things read and a lot less hassle, too.

Hi, I have just been reading some of your Steps for Prepping. I totally agree with everything that I have read so far. I am new to this site. I live in Australia and have been thinking about prepping for some time but just haven't taken any steps in that direction. Is it something that you do as a group? I have read on another forum where people advertise for "members" and have criteria that needs to be met. Do you work together with a community or just solo?

In 2004 I went thru 4 hurricanes in six consecutive weeks. Hurricanes Charley, Francis, Ivan, and Jeanne all hit one after each other. Charley hit in august, and was responded to in a normal fashion. But there was no time for any rebuilding or government assistance when 3 hurricanes hit only ten days apart in one month. September 5th: Francis (cat 4), Sept 15: Ivan (cat 3) Sept 25th: Jeanne (cat 3). There was only a matter of a few days before the next one came in. For that entre time there was no power anywhere to be seen in any of the neighborhoods around my house, nor street lights. There were downed trees, power poles, lines, and signs every where. Thousands upon thousand of trees like pick up sticks strewn across roads. Not even a 4x4 can traverse dozens of trees six feet in diameter strewn together in a mass of carnage. Where's your aid coming now? Oh and by the way you have 3 days before the next Category 3 hurricane hits. Better get chopping!!

As far as being a 'community' I feel this needs to be approached with caution. I noticed a few people after a month of no assistance acting the same way the 5 foolish virgins responded to the wise. " we didn't prepare, give us your stuff!!" However there is such a thing as personal accountability. Why aren't you prepared? Why is it now my responsibility to take care of your family? As horrible as it may sound my family eats first then me. I go hungry if needed. If I don't eat you can be sure no one outside my family is!

However I provided power for my next door neighbor, and the household behind me for lights and refrigeration. I was also able to provide water to 5 homes (including the two stated) by connecting garden hoses to their houses to my well. We had a 'daisy chain' of hoses going in one side of a house to the other. Honestly I'm laughing so hard. we still laugh about my 'community well'. water pressure was horrid, but it worked. I also provided my 5 chainsaws, axes, shovels, and various landscaping equipment to help with debris removal.

Also I'm not alone.... The vast majority of my community is likewise minded, and we came together as community. We all live in the country and kind of click up like that anyways. But we knew each other for years previously. We had like 10 gas grills going in my, and my rear neighbors back yard. Because I had power to keep food. We survived together.

This is crazy... but it was a good time. I love my neighbors. Great peeps.
