Lol. It does illustrate the double-standards of the law

Double standards are in effect. At least some states are allowing women to breastfeed their children in public with no legal action.Breasts are breasts some men have larger breasts than some women.
In the book of genesis when Adam and Eve sinned they made aprons to cover their sex organs that meant below the waist.Eve was top less.
The american culture has problems with nudity. When they see nudity they think of sex. Some of us have come to understand " Who told you that you were naked ? " Maybe some day others will have the understanding.

True. But most women (unlike men in the US) are not "turned on" by seeing breasts. Hence the double standard.

A little over a century ago women were thought of as not being able to be "turned on" at all - i.e. there was no such thing as a female sex drive. Or so they thought - since 400 bc. Boy were they wrong.

Currently every state but Idaho has laws that protect a women's right to breastfeed in public. Some places, like New York State, allow women to go topless anyplace that men can go topless. Change is slowly happening,

That's not entirely true, a lot of women are by a man with strong pecs, in fact I was reading somewhere that the sexiest part of a man based on a survey f women was actually the back. That being said I do not then support the idea of requiring men to wear shirts because it could cause problems for women.

Actually, I think in Indiana it is illegal.

Personally, I am more often grossed out by people going topless then turned on by it.

:o

I would say that this, better than many things, tells us it's still 1692 and as nutty as hell in some parts of the world.

I do not dispute that. But I submit that it is a fairly recent phenomenon (for most women) since the culture was opposed to the concept for so many centuries. It is not well understood yet by society at large, and particularly by the powers that be.

Why assume it is only recently that women found shirtless men attractive? Given that it was historically taboo to mention being turned on, it's not fair to assume that it's only in modern times that women feel that way. Not when it is only recently that women wouldn't be completely ostracized for bringing the topic up.

I'm confused, is it objectification and problematic and terribad when women have their bits out or are we being horribly oppressive for saying they shouldn't get them out?
It depends what day of the week it is.

The unrealistic ideal is, it is terrible to objectify people, and it is terrible to say they can't be in a state of dress because of gender. Personally, I don't care all that much about being objectified, I unapologetically check out hot guys with their shirts off whenever I get the opportunity. So does my boyfriend. Both of us follow a "look with the eyes, not with the hands" rule. Besides, what is wrong with appreciating the human form, as long as you don't base opinions on personality or competence on it?

Considering that prior to WWI men could be arrested for appearing in public without a shirt, a shirtless man likely used to be even more tantalizing. Breasts are not inherently sexual but our culture has made them so. We can see this by looking at other cultures where female toplessness is the norm.

many cultures, in different periods of history, have celebrated female sexuality.

THE puritanical misogyny that was rife in the west until late in the 20thC is a result of influences specific to the region. Take your pick on which of those influences is primarily to blame.

Very true. But not western European culture, and by extension, American (both North and South) culture as it came from Europe.

Circa 400 bc, a Greek named Hypocrates founded western medicine. It was already assumed that women had no sexuality and Mr Hypocrates defined a malady (that was not taken off the books until 1950) called "hysteria." It was the effects of unfulfilled female sexual desire. One doctor in the middle 19th century described the symptoms and it filled tens of pages in his medical journal.

It was only about 1900 that medical science "discovered" that women had a sex drive and could [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse]. (of course most "primitive" cultures understood this all along)

I'm still waiting for anyone in this thread to offer a valid reason as to why men should be permitted to go topless in public but women should not.
