Why should one care if ''God'' exists?

So many people say that...
I bet.

For me it took awhile. Nothing happened. It was very disappointing, and it only strengthened my view that "Jesus" and this religion were / are a fabrication created by unstable fools. Then one day I was riding the bus to work and, after yet another bout of praying for God to actually be real, I said "I knew it, it's just BS". At this point I was in a dangerous place in life (another story). I guess it was my time, something crazy and mind blowing happened on that bus, and in a split second I knew God exists. Things got weird and wonderful for awhile, but that's for another story I guess.

The number of people who come here and start threads like this is frustrating. They're convinced God doesn't exist, but they want to debate about it anyway. They INSIST with certainty that God doesn't exist, but spend hours here asking believers WHY they think God exists.

You're free to bang your head against the wall, have at it.

I've never said anywhere on here or elsewhere, that I believe a god doesn't exist with certainty. In fact, I stated the opposite in this very thread. You're free to ignore this thread, and others like it. Please don't misconstrue my words to fit your own view of atheists.

And my thread title has nothing to do with debating why do religious people think a god exists. I'm asking why should anyone care?

Again, please refrain from posting in this thread if you just want to take pot shots at atheists.

The debate of the existence of God is as old as time and will probably never be settled. What better place to debate this subject than on a religious forum?

If I go somewhere where there's only atheists, how am I ever going to get a theistic perspective?

I'm also not going to go on a video game forum to discuss matters of faith and religion.

If you don't like a particular subject, ignore the thread or stick to the Christians only sections. They greatly outnumber the parts we're allowed into.

You're right, my reply doesn't belong in your thread. I have read the whole thread, and now I'm asking you to forgive me for taking out my frustration on you. Btw, I don't lump all atheists into one pile, or beleivers either. But I can see how I gave that impression. I'll certainly refrain from being a snot to you in the future.

I don't have a track record for taking shots at atheists. But lately some of these threads are testing my patience. The same goes for some of the threads here posted by believers. I think at this point it's safe to say I'm lacking patience and grace.

lol well, thank you for this. :) I'm honestly not a combative type. It wasn't all that long ago that I followed Christianity, and not in a 'lukewarm' kind of way. So, I understand your opinion.

Just curious, which denomination did you indentify with, if any?

That's understandable considering where we are. :)

I was raised Catholic, and then after college, I was more about just following the Bible, and attending non denominational services.

God don't need your buy in woman.

''woman?'' ^_^

Believing in God ain't necessary for living a good and productive life either because what is good and productive is determined by you right?

I know you think that atheists hold up themselves as gods of sorts. Like I decide what is good and true. But, you'd be wrong to think that, Jeremy. The truth is, that what is good and right is how we view humanity. What is good and right in terms of how to benefit others, how to use our lives in services to others, etc.

Is this merely a religious tenet? Atheists can live meaningful, productive and compassionate lives in service to others, yanno. :)

I know your story prior to you coming to Christianity. But, your story is your own. Not every atheist thinks that because there may be no god, this is license to pursue mayhem. lol Just food for thought. Open thy mind. lol

No, you can't claim to be only seeking the "theistic perspective." When someone is honestly seeking someone else's point of view, he asks leading questions but he doesn't argue the answers he gets.

This section is labeled as such for a reason, however. I take it that we can discuss these topics without judgement, and to have an open minded discussion. Philosophy is very much about being open minded to learning others' views.

My OP is designed to gain answers that deal with why is it necessary to believe? Why would a god expect his creation to believe in him/it? I say we simply don't know those answers, but theists might think we can know those answers through their respective holy books. This is where the discussion can either remain fruitful, or veer off into theists vs. atheists...and that wasn't my intent for creating the thread.

Revelation 4:11 says, “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.” Colossians 1:16 reiterates the point: “All things were created by him and for him.” Being created for God’s pleasure does not mean humanity was made to entertain God or provide Him with amusement. God is a creative Being, and it gives Him pleasure to create. God is a personal Being, and it gives Him pleasure to have other beings He can have a genuine relationship with. It would be hard for God to have a relationship with people that don't even believe in Him.

That all sounds very empty, no offense. I don't blame you for not wanting that life.

My answer to your question is power, God's transforming power which allows us to connect intimately with God by his spirit; it's joyful, hopeful, transformative, loving.

What happened between Catholicism and atheism, would you like to share?

I was raised Catholic, and then after college, I was more about just following the Bible, and attending non denominational services.

I actually enjoyed my life following Christianity. It didn't seem empty at the time.

I don't think anyone cares. It doesn't matter.
