  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

In any case, it is MY understanding that Lutherans affirm that we may request the prayers only of the living.

This is true, since we can only make such requests to those living in this world.

The only way to communicate with the departed saints is through prayer, and prayer to anyone other than God is idolatry and certainly unBiblical.

We certainly know that the depated saints do pray for us. They don't need to be asked. Besides, in reality, we can't ask them to.

And what do you think will happen if you pray to Father directly?
Would it be more proper or less? And why ... IN YOUR OPINION please.
Ed[/quote]

Ed, if I asked YOU to pray for me, would you or I think it THEREFORE is more likely to be answered? Either way, does that suggest it's wrong for me to ask you to pray for me?

Doesn't the Bible counsel us to pray for each other? To seek the prayers of others?

.
But in all fairness, when you ask me to pray for you, you know I can see and hear you.
But how can you possibly be assured that "St.Thomas" can see and hear you and millions of others that pray to him for intercession at the same time?

Yes, as a practical matter, Catholics and Orthodox do this. Properly considered theologically, it's not so. On the Catholic Answers radio show (on EWTN radio) they acknowledge that the saints in Heaven are not omniscient. They can't hear us. Catholic or Orthodox prayers to the saints actually have to go through God to get to the targeted saint. So, as Jimmie Akin would put it, we (Catholics and Orthodox, probably not us Lutherans) pray through God to Mary, etc. Jimmie would say that's really what we mean when we say we pray to Jesus through Mary, we're really only addressing Mary through Jesus. (At the far end, presumably then Mary or whatever saint does intercede with God on behalf of the person praying.)

This I really do not understand.

But the prayer reaches God already. Isn't that the main purpose of a prayer?

Hey, it's a Roman Catholic problem.
The people with the beads pray nonsensically in terms of proper theology, so the apologists are stuck with making sense of it--trying to make sense of it, anyway.

Ed, again, I didn't suggest any rule violation. Only a bit of discomfort. I'm just a poster and just expressed that. I'm alone in it. And that's okay. Sorry for the personal expression.

.
Hey. What kind of a Lutheran would you be if you would not have a personal expression!
Isn't TCL home for individuals such as this?
Don't we question about anything that moves if we do not think it is right ... as per the Scriptures and the Confessions? :)

...

I've seen discussions in OBOB about Lutherans that stated clearly WRONG or clearly misleading information about us. Except for a couple of mods there who happen to be Lutherans - and me, lol - no one would know all that divisive disinformation (and dissing) was going on since Lutherans don't tend to go to OBOB. I didn't like it. And what's good for the goose is good for the gander; MY perspective is that we should treat others as we would want them to treat us.

...
But we're not trying to diss anyone. :)

Haven't you noticed here a thread that apparently was not proper nor respectful of the RC and our own TCLers were openly stating that this is not right.
And that thread disappeared.

If some other forums diss us or present incorrect information AND do not allow debates - let the good mods handle this stuff ...with all this money they get paid ... (ducking to avoid a shoe with a red M on it) ...

Thanks, :)
Ed

I'd be more worried about Zec and his lutefisk.

^_^
(turning around) ... Naah ... I'm not afraid of Zec ... (looking under the desk) ... and none of his lutefisk business ... (clicking the second lock) ... he don't scare me at all ... (slipping under the covers and staring into the dark)

It is a double-edged sword ... :D:)

On one hand you behave like Cain in exhile after you make even a tiniest mistake in judging your brother ... yet the Lord has mercy :) and places a mark on you, so the beasts of the wild would not tear you apart.:D:)

Then, some people start counting the letters of your name and conclude you are an Anti-Christ and start calling on curses that our Lord will punish you ... yet our Lord ignores these prayers and gives you wisdom how to handle such things. :)

A Christian Mod is a Janitor in the house of God.

In my opinion, in the eyes of our Lord, there is NO better position in CF than a Mod with a Red or a Purple M. :)

Thanks, :)

Show me a scripture where the departed pray for us.

I've heard this too but have never seen the scriptural backup for it, so I'm hoping Rev can post it. Our Q&A only posits that the saints in heaven are dead and have no knowledge of what goes on here on earth.

Hey! I thought you resignatiated.

Yeah, but then they arm wrestled me back to staff (it's not like they had to try really hard...). I now supervise the Society section.

My grandson said that one ornery kid that acted up in church real bad was the antichrist. He also said that someone had seen Elvis down at the 7-11. I don't know who to believe anymore.:o

Oh ... in my opinion, "yellow S" is really a most misunderstood position. :D:)

Some people think they are squinty eyed supervisors that watch EVERYTHING as a hobby, chew tobacco and spit, carry a whip and TELL Janitors what to do.

Well ... they do not realize that the S does not really tell the Janitors what to do, ... but does the job that a Janitor did not do. :D

They actually clean up after the Janitor is "done" cleaning up ... something like a mother who sees her child "wash" the dishes and says: "That's nice".

When I would not get to completing a report ... Kathy would not say a word - complete it, wipe it, dry it and archive it. :liturgy: ... and then go and do other reports in other forums ... done.

Boy-oh-boy, the kitchen of God is really a busy place. :)
