  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What is the value in a human life? The person is made in God's image. Not a single soul alive needs to "do" anything to be "worth" anything. I'm sorry to be blunt, but that is a horrible worldview.

Who can be loved? God loves everyone, including the most broken-down people. Read the Gospel of Luke. The upside-down kingdom of God. So even if the person has nothing to "offer." They are loved by God. And they can be loved by God's people.

What of their tremendous pain and suffering? This is a terrible trial. But God is sovereign. He doesn't just "allow" it. He ordains it. Why? We don't know. One reason that comes to mind is so that the lost will see His church ministering to the hurt, sick, and broken, and see this compassion that the Holy Spirit ministers to others through us. They will see us sitting by their side while they writhe, or slump, or cry, or just wait. To the best of our abilities, we will not leave them. We will not stop loving them. And we are just fallible servants of God. Imagine God, in His grandeur, how much more He will stay with and love someone who is suffering.

I was moved yesterday watching a video of a boy with a severe neurological impairment, who is bound to a wheelchair, cannot talk, walk, or even wave. He can open his eyes, and almost smile. What is the point of his life? He goes from his wheelchair to his bed, he sits in bed and gets changed by someone. He can't "do" anything or "offer" anyone anything, right?

Wrong. The answer is love. Even if he lacks the cognitive ability to initiate love (which I doubt), the people around him can. Love is acts of service and self-sacrifice. Think of his mother, who does everything for him. She gets up in the middle of the night to change him, intubate him, move his position. 24/7 she cares for him. What if the child were to have the ability to decide to end his life? She would be devastated. Why? Because of all the things he could've "done?" No. Because she loves him.

It's love, guys. Love. Jesus said it, so it's gotta be true.

34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13, NIV)

There are people who are happy and healthy; and they just enjoy life. But there are people who suffer a lot in this life. There are people who are disabled and they see the people who are not disable being able to do stuff that they cannot do. It makes them want to kill themselves. And some people deal with actual pain, not emotional, but physical pain. Why can't they just end it all?

All people experience pain. And it's what causes your heart to beat, lungs to breath, and reminds you to eat. If you take morphine, it dulls the pain. If you take enough to stop all pain, your breathing stops. Pain is part of life.

Why wouldn't he jump to alleviate the suffering? Sometimes suicide is the only option.

Because there are other people who might have needed his help before they died as well. Wouldn't that be a better way to end your life? To die trying to save someone else?

For example, my brother killed himself. There are thousands of people he could have helped in the following years. So his girlfriend gave him a bad day and he was in pain. Nope. Bad decision.

Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain experienced despair so bad that it made them take their lives. If you’ve never been that depressed, you have no right to criticize. I grew up in an abusive dysfunctional family and I’ve been that depressed ( and I tried suicide as a young adult) As an older adult I knew that if I wasn’t around that my family would abuse my oldest child and that was the only reason I didn’t do it again. Mental illness is being talked about more and there’s more help available for people.
Dr. Kevorkian is in jail, fortunately.
I think he’s dead.

There’s some pain that you don’t have to experience and if you grew up with or been in a relationship with an abuser you are experiencing it. Somehow it just makes it worse to know that you don’t have to live like this but you do.

Depression runs in my family, like most people, and my brother killed himself becasue of it. We all get abused by life and other people. How you respond to the pain, makes the difference. Oprah had this problem in her life.

In most cases there is help or advice for severe depression. However, I can't imagine sitting in a fire waiting to be dead. So, I'll let God be the judge of people on 911.

I don't know for sure if it were true or not but it was reported that when one of the buildings was collapsing during 911 a person actually slid down the building and survived. Person jumping out of windows during that tragic day may not have been attempting to commit suicide, maybe faced with the horrible circumstance they were facing, that was what they felt was their best alternative and who knows, maybe by some miracle they could have survived. If you believe in God's word, anything is possible. That's where faith comes in. As believers, we should never give up as there's always hope.
. Physics 101 - that’s not possible to have someone slide down a building that tall and survive . 50ft is a death sentence for about half of the people who fall that far . Sorry to burst your bubble! ( there are actually times , not many though, that I wish I wasn’t scientifically literate)

Famous world wide , sort of, were the survivors who had no parachute when they jumped or fell out an airplane from much much higher than any building ever.

The most amazing to me was the one verified who ended up with only a broken nose.

Yes, people can hope and believe they will be spared - they are not always,

no more than from a super-hot fire (those 3 did not know they would survive - they simply said "whether Yahweh saves us or not, we will not deny Him" and were thrown in the fire many times hotter than 911.

(people who threw them to the furnace in were killed by the heat instantly)

Jesus was with them , and all 3 came out of the furnace and did not even smell of smoke.

Then those who had wanted them dead were thrown in the furnace, and died while they were still in the air before they dropped.

Sometimes it seems unfair to say that it is wrong to kill yourself, for those who are actually suffering. (Just to let you know, this is not me).

I watched a video on 9/11 attack, and people were jumping out of the windows. These people were going to die anyways. Then I watched a family who talked about their son. This was a Catholic family. They were talking about an unknown man who jumped out of the building, but they couldn't tell if it was their son or not. The picture was blurry. But you can tell that he was a cook just like their son by the clothes he was wearing. But they were pretty sure that it was not the son. They were saying that he knew not to commit suicide, for it is a sin against God. They were disappointed that anyone would even ask if that was their son. That was the only reason why the believe he wasn't their son. They couldn't tell by the picture. It was a little blurry, but you can clearly see what clothes he had on.

So, the question is, would they be disappointed if that was their son? Why would God tell someone that they have to suffer through the pain?

This guy was in a burning hot building, and breathing all this smoke. Do you know what that is like? Well, I'm sure you do. But it hurts your lungs. Why wouldn't he jump to alleviate the suffering? Sometimes suicide is the only option.
Men are more likely to commit suicide than women. Doctors are more likely to commit suicide than any other profession. I do not know if it is because of medical malpractice suits or their easy access to pain medication, or other.

Suicides are more common than homicides,
"Problems leading to suicide may be related to mental health, jobs, finances, or relationships or crises occurring two weeks prior, according to the CDC report."
http://thechart.blogs.cnn.com/2010/05/13/cdc-twice-as-many-u-s-suicides-as-homicides/

Jesus commanded his disciples to love one another (John 13). I may not take the life of another and by doing that may like to pardon my own self. Jesus taught people should be harmless as doves (Matthew 10:16).

To this day I still have a depression problem but I survive for only one reason, the blood of Christ. I come out of a dysfunctional family/environment. I too lost my younger brother to drugs. When it comes to suicide there's a much better way I'm afraid. Satan likes nothing more than for someone to take their own life. He chalks that up as another win for him when that happens. And I guess Oprah came out of it OK one of the richest people in America in spite of all her negative past.

And those people who fell out of airplanes and survived landed in water or very wet marshland. Not cement or dry dirt
Sorry, no, not at all. From memory, one fell through many tree branches of tall trees in the mountains. I think they broke several or more bones.
The one who broke their nose, and that was the only injury, after a great fall from a plane high up in the air
landed face down on a dry concrete runway.

I guess if someone wants to kill themselves they can, but I wouldn't advise it. The problem is, they are without hope, a key contributor to faith. Jesus told us that we could move an entire mountain with a small measure of faith (only the size of a mustard seed, which is pretty small). No matter how bad things get in life, God can get you through with a little faith and a lot of prayer.
