  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Why is prostitution illegal?

I don't believe that it should be legalized at all. While I don't expect my fellow American to follow my own religious beliefs, I do believe that we have in common, some basic standard of what constitues ethical behavior in society. To me, the real question is-is prostitution harmful? The entire episode with Governor Spitzer bears out that it is, both for the "John" and the married spouse of the person. It devastates their lives and it's ethically wrong. Marriage is an important cornerstone of our society and as such, it is important to support in every way we can.

Prostitution is not some act of business whereby, the girl/woman is an equal partner in the transaction. In many instances, drugs and mental health are involved in the equation, sometimes bundled together. It is also an illegal act in that juvenile girls obtain fake IDs and get caught up in the industry. I work with them and more than a few have done business in Las Vegas. If the Nevada system worked so well, girls that I work with, would be unable to engage in the business in the first place. It is a devastating experience for them and a few have been in dangerous situations. This terrible system perpetuates itslef becaues many men do not see their mother, sister, or daughter, but rather, some object. For the stability of society and for the health of our fellow citizens, we shouldn't tolerate it to be legalized.

What it really bears out is that many politicians who spout about "family values" are lying hypocrites who manipulate the gullible in order to get votes. This is not the first case of a political figure who rails against something in public and has been caught practicing it in private. Such as that guy from last year who was anti-gay and solicited gay prostitutes. People should learn not to vote for "family values" candidates.
It devastates their lives and it's ethically wrong. Marriage is an important cornerstone of our society and as such, it is important to support in every way we can.
This assumes that all prostitutes and their customers are married. Admittedly, many are, and I agree that adultery is wrong.

However, this argument does not apply to either prostitutes or customers who are not married or in a committed relationship, or are in a relationship where the partner does not care or is willing to participate. (And I mean really willing, not pretending to be.)

Also, if adultery is an argument for the illegality of prostitution, then having affairs and married men picking up women in bars should be made illegal as well.

Think about it: what is worse for the betrayed spouse? Having sex with a nameless, faceless woman doing it for money or becoming emotionally involved with another woman in an affair?
Prostitution is not some act of business whereby, the girl/woman is an equal partner in the transaction.
Illegal prostitution certainly isn't. By definition, illegal prostitution is in the control of criminals. The woman has no protection from the law, because she is doing something illegal herself.

For legal prostitution, the question then becomes: why does she stay in such an environment? If the "abusive" proprietors were unable to get job applicants, they would have no choice other than to improve the environment.
In many instances, drugs and mental health are involved in the equation, sometimes bundled together.
Drugs seem to permeate any profession with a surplus of cash, such as professional sports.

As far as mental health, perhaps if there was not such a stigma on prostitution, it would not attract so many women with mental problems. Perhaps well-adjusted college students might be attracted, to earn extra cash.
It is also an illegal act in that juvenile girls obtain fake IDs and get caught up in the industry.
Millions more juvenile girls use those same fake IDs to get alcohol. Both of my nieces did it. Therefore the alcohol industry should be made illegal. (Again.)
I work with them and more than a few have done business in Las Vegas. If the Nevada system worked so well, girls that I work with, would be unable to engage in the business in the first place.
Then more regulation is needed, or the true source of the problem, those who make fake IDs, should be addressed.
This terrible system perpetuates itslef becaues many men do not see their mother, sister, or daughter, but rather, some object.
If there was not a stigma on prostitution, it would be no different from your mother, sister, or daughter being a bank teller.

You're both engineers. How cute. My man and I are both in chem. :)

Is there good chemistry between the two of yous?:)

Last year I did the RA and TA gig in school but scheduling in academia is less of an issue. Having to be in one location for the majority of the day and juggling classes is more taxing than I assumed it would be. These past years I got used to doing what I wanted when I wanted.

I am pretty sure I have reverted back to myself as a 5 year old. "I am doing this thing, that I want, and to [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] with the rest of humanity."

Well, I hope you have a great rest of semester, quarter or how ever it's formatted in your neck of the woods. And good for your lady being at Duke. That's an excellent school.
