How about nude art? Would those who are against nudity consider that offensive, sinful art? Are you against people that pose nude for artistic reasons?

I've actually considered doing that. I didn't follow through, but it's not something I would rule out.
I would assume it's okay as long as it doesn't depict a real person. I feel if it's a nameless, faceless woman, then it's not considered lust. I don't know, but that's what I think.

What are you wanting in torah? The issue with Ham or the laws regarding viewing nude folks?
Nevermind, I found it :)

I don't know why, other than that people are just raised to find it offensive.

I am not offended by it, and I don't find nudity in the absence of sexual intent to be sexually enticing, either. I could probably be a nudist if it weren't for the certainty that so many of the people I care about would freak out.

I'm not offended by nudity. The human body is a beautiful work of art. I am offended by people who use nudity in a self depraving way or in a degrading way towards others. Unfortunately in our over sexualized society; most people can't see past the body as something totally sexual. Yes it's a dimension of our body, but when I see nudity in art or whatever my first thoughts are of the beauty of creation.

I could never be a nudist though; I like clothes and wicker furniture too much.

I used to look at nude pictures for the novelty of seeing women naked.

When I was 13.

Sometimes I wonder if the nudity taboo is a symptom of the chronic adolescence that seems to saturate our society.

Blind Post:
Nudity is only offensive because our world is so sex-charged that when people see nakedness, they automatically think it's dirty or sexually provocative. But honestly, it's only society that has made it that way. Humans were MADE naked, and I personally don't find anything shameful about the naked human body. It's only offensive when nudity is used in a sexually-enticing manner.

It can depict a human being :p Just not someone who has existed or does exist. When people look at it, they could easily commit adultery with her in their hearts through the image. If she doesn't exist then she's not real, she doesn't have a soul to be shamed and she's nothing more than ink on the wall. Therefore, I don't personally see a problem.

An issue like this was raised in the mens pornography addiction board. We all agreed that pornography was sinful, but couldn't come to a consensus on whether creating a faceless woman in your mind was sinful. I don't do it, but the thought was up for debate.

When I saw Michaelangelo's David in Florence; it was the most beautiful thing. I defintely was thinking of the genius of the artist and how wonderfully crafted the human form is from the master artist. I wouldn't flinch at having nude art in my home; it so wouldn't bother me; as long as it is a tasteful representation that inhances the beauty of the body and isn't saturated in depravity. There is a HUGE difference in that. Although the human form is art; I don't agree with it being presented in a "naughty" or pornagraphic way. That is abuse of God's creation/artform and extremely distasteful. I want my children to feel like their bodies are wonderfully created and the work of an Almighty artist and to feel a certian amount of awe aboutr that. But, I also want them to have balance and know that they are the keepers of that great creation, and it's not to be paraded in any lewd or distasteful way. their bodies honor God and are to be used for that purpose. And I don't want them to see a nude and think - "naughty!" or "sex!!!!!". I don't think that's healthy.

yeah... basically dodging the heart of the issue to look at the letter of it...

weeeeeeeeell, if she's not real........
It's actually looking at the definition of lust from the context in which Yahshua uses it. There was some pretty compelling arguments given for the position (backed up by scripture) and some equally compelling arguements against it also backed up by scripture. I'm just putting the idea out there, not saying it's fact :p

I'm pretty sure if it's adultery or murder if you just THINK about it, then it's lust even if she has no face/reality. The body most likely IS someone's. Just because you put a proverbial bag over her head doesn't lessen that.

I don't view nudity as offensive, the human body is a wonderful work of art and it's a shame it has been sexualised to the point where flashing a bit of skin is viewed in such a negative light. What causes nudity to be "offensive" or immodest is due to our perceptions of the naked form, not the nakedness itself. Sometimes I do feel if we could be that little bit more open about the naked form, make seeing the naked body less of a taboo, it wouldn't be this offensive, sexual thing.

The logic they were using would probably have a reply like:
The person you're thinking about murdering is a real person, you're not imagining killing a made-up person. How can you commit murder in your heart when that person does not exist to be murdered, other than in your mind? Another point some people made is the claim that the original Greek words mean to have an intent to act on the desire. So murder and adultery is murder and adultery even if you don't physically do them, but merely have a good mind to. The key there is that the intent must be present, eg: When you see a girl on the street, there's a difference between thinking "Her breasts look really nice" and thinking "I want to hold those breasts".

Again, I don't know if I actually agree to this, it's just the discussion that took place in the other forum.

Heart is about intent, whether it can come to fruition or not. Otherwise murder in your mind/heart wouldn't have any implication at all. Intent has nothing to do with reality of follow through. Intent is what is inside at that moment, when the negativity, the "evil" of the moment carries you away. It's a heart condition that makes you think these things, something that needs to be rectified, not excused. I could say... lust after xyz movie star and it's NOT realistic, there is no ability to follow through. It's still lust, even if intent doesn't equal ability. kwim?

Well the thread is pretty de-railed, but I guess since it's your thread anyway it doesn't matter :p

I understand, and I agree. It's a lot to wrap my head around. I think it's best to steer clear of something if there are doubts about it. There's some people that believe to simply look or desire without the intent to act on it isn't wrong, but I don't necessarily agree with that so the whole intent thing doesn't work for me either. The idea which really influenced me was whether the person was real or not. In your xyz movie star scenario, to me it would be a sin because she's a real person. That's why I told Kev that I didn't personally see anything wrong with an illustration of a made-up woman.

The reason I'm inclined to think this is because of what I read on the other forum, some would say it's splitting hairs, but what I read was a guy claiming that most of the time what is labelled as lust is actually not, but instead what he called 'rehearsing'. And lust is more about ungodly cravings for something that isn't yours.

I really have to start writing my essay -____-

On topic, I think public nudity is also offensive because I don't want to see some old guys junk.
