Why four gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John)? Why not one or ten or some other number?

Doe scripture say anything about it? Does tradition?

Could be why this 4th Assembly in Revelation has such a long message delivered to it by Jesus

Revelation 2:18 And to the messenger of the Assembly in Thyatira, write!
Now this is saying the Son of the God, the One having the eyes of Him as flame of fire, and the feet of Him as to burnished-brass.

The church in Thyatira has a longer message delivered to it from Jesus Christ than any of the seven churches, although it is interesting to note that the church there is the smallest of the seven, and the city of Thyatira is the smallest of the seven cities.

One interesting tradition included Tatian's mid 2nd century Diatessaron that harmonized all four gospels into one eliminating some of the apparent contradictions. This single Gospel narrative was used for hundreds of years in syriac speaking churches. This shows the four Gospels were accepted as authoritative already by this time.

The Diatessaron (c 160–175) is the most prominent early Gospel harmony; and was created by Tatian, an early Christian Assyrian apologist and ascetic.[1] Tatian sought to combine all the textual material he found in the four gospels—Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John—into a single coherent narrative of Jesus's life and death...............

The Diatessaron is notable evidence for the authority already enjoyed by the four gospels by the mid-2nd century.[7] Twenty years after Tatian's harmony, Irenaeus expressly proclaimed the authoritative character of the four gospels.
