  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

being called Roman Catholic...why is it basically like being slapped in the face?
I wouldn't call it a slap in the face. The reason some people don't like it is because we are of the Latin rite. Catholic suffices, we don't need to be qualified in anyway. We should just recognize ourselves as 'Catholic'.

Having said that, lots of people don't understand it and say Roman Catholic without meaning offense. Lots of Catholics don't even recognize the difference and many don't care anyways, so as far as I am concerned, we can't get too upset about being called Roman Catholics many of our own do it.

It's really not something to get too worked up about in the grand scheme of it all.

Only when it has been used by non-catholics in a derogatory way, usually with "Papist" attached to the end of it. But with the love of our faith and Church, I feel sad for people such as them. Such heavy contempt and hatred must be a heavy burden to carry around, especially since that don't go to confession :)

Yeah, it's only a"slap in the face" when it's used in a derogatory way, otherwise, unless it's referring to the Latin (or Roman) Rite, it just inaccurate. The Catholic Church is composed of BOTH the Latin (or Roman) Rite and the Eastern Rites.

I agree with Miss Shelby - Most often when people use the term 'Roman Catholic', they don't realize that there's anything wrong with it, and I'm not going to spite them that. As with any designation, it can become derogatory, but I don't think, for the most part, the common usage of this phrase is derogatory.

Usually dirivities of like 'Romanist' or 'Roman-nut'..or if they're obviously doing it because they know some don't like it.. which more often than not isn't the case.

It's in my RCIA study book. I don't see why there would ever be any problem with it unless someone used it negatively. But that is the same with any title or name. I don't want to be called "smart" or "intelligent" by people that would mean it sarcastically either. It all has to do with motive or perceived motive.

Sometimes there is the implication (and I think this is how the term came into being) that we are not part of the Universal (Catholic) Church, but just the Roman church. (lowercase "c").
Roman Universal is a strange term isnt it! ^_^

Anyway that term is now inaccurate, it should be "Vatican Catholic" if anything!!!!

Both the Catholic and EO Churches refer to themselves as the "one, holy, catholic & apostolic church", so sometimes it (RC) is used to differentiate between the two. I never knew that it offended some folks. Now I know and I try to respect that, although it is a hard habit to break since I was raised Catholic (converted to EO prior to my marriage) and used to use the term"RC" to refer to myself. If I ever accidentally offend while visiting, please let me know and I will correct myself!

I have a great deal of respect for the Catholic Church and appreciate how(for the most part) we work together in the open forums to defend the liturgical, sacramental Church.

I am blessed to live in a community in which Orthodox and Catholic churches have a good rapport ( the 2 Orthodox churches in town recently held a fundraiser for St. mary's Ukrainian Catholic church after it was destroyed in an explosion. The event was held at my Greek Orthodox parish). I wish things were as friendly in more places!

With the exception of protestants who are on an anti-Catholic tear, I honestly believe that any offense is unintended. (At least I hope so.)

In peace,
Wiffey
