Why don't the people who helped Christ know they helped him?

Matthew 25
31When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory:
32And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats:
33And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.
34Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:
35For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:
36Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.
37Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink?
38When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?
39Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?
40And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
41Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
42For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink:
43I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.
44Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?
45Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.
46And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

Why do those who think they helped Christ, go to Hell, and those who did not know they helped Christ, go to Heaven? I often heard people say, "Well, you can always be self-deceived into thinking you're a Christian, so it's important you test yourself by your fruits," -- and they reference Matthew 25. However, they never consider the other side of this. Those who seem to have tested themselves by their fruits went to Hell, and those who were oblivious went to Heaven. Why is this (I don't really know how to phrase the question I want)?

It's about walking the walk, not just talking the talk. Not just believing it but faith producing action. Being fruitful.

It's really not about earning salvation points but being merciful.

All throughout Scripture it shows we show out faith by what we do for the least of these.

It ties in with Matt 7:21-

Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter.

Having faith is not enough (Lord, Lord)...but do the will of the Father-obey the Lord's command-love your neighbor as yourself....avoid sin, repent and confess your sins.

Read James 1 and 2 also, but this is from James 1 and I think it explains itself-

If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain.

Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

But it's those people who claim to have religion that were deceived. Those who didn't know they did anything for God, were saved.
Because those that practiced their faith naturally produced the fruits of faith.

Those that claimed faith but failed to practice it produced no fruit.

I have to ask... because I'm not sure where you are coming from.

Are you experiencing some sort of crisis of faith so this Scripture concerns you?

I'll be back in a bit, simmering soup on the stove.
