Initial cash outlay for led bulbs is high but they will last for a very, very long time and pay for themselves in the long run.

I wish. I have this light fixture way up high on the ceiling. It was a T9 fluorescent bulb that burned out every couple of years. I'm afraid of heights, and climbing up that wobbly ladder made my kneecaps do a dance, which made the ladder wobble worse. So, I thought, why not replace the fixture with a new one that can take LED bulbs, which last forever? If replacing a bulb was frightful, then replacing the entire fixture was a nightmare, but I did it. I put in two good, trusty LEDs, and I congratulated myself. A few months later one of the bulbs died.

(Grumble)

Let's hope it's a fluke.

There was a time when public education included a consumer course with financial information for high school students. It has been removed from most. Many are following poor examples from parents or relatives and influenced by student loans and easy credit.

No one expects a calamity. But I think it's wise to understand fat and lean and prepare accordingly. The measure of sacrifice differs for everyone. I've encountered extremes in Dave Ramsey's Facebook groups that I wouldn't attempt.

Suze Orman had a segment on her show called Can You Afford It? Viewers would call in and present a financial snapshot with the item they wanted to buy. She denied most of them. It provided a window into the mindset of American consumers. Many don't anticipate the expense of retirement or the smallness of their savings until confronted.
