Why Do You Have Your Job

My high school drafting teacher asked me if I wanted a drafting job. I said yes and started at a local company as a mechanical drafter after I graduated high shcool in 98. I worked there part time as I went to community college. I stayed there as a drafter until our company was purchased by our competitor in 2002 and they closed the machinery department. They gave everyone the opportunity to stay on, and for me, that meant becoming a truss designer. I've been one ever since.

I'm not there because it's something I've dreamed of doing, but because someone gave me a job.

I joined a Police Force last year, something I`d always wanted to do. I`ve been in eight months now. I suppose I`ve got the job because I still have some kind of naive expectation that I might be able to help people in some kind of meaningful way.

What I do is just an extension of something I've enjoyed and known I was good at since high school. I write software for a living. I really couldn't say it's a childhood dream but I do find it enjoyable most of the time. The pay is excellent. Much more than I need. In fact, my boss has suggested I increase my rate (I work as a consultant), but I do not feel I need it or deserve it as the average person earning minimum wage has to work harder and later than I do.

As far as it being my career, I don't worry about that. My career is following God and I will do whatever I'm lead to do by Him. If God called me to quit my job tomorrow and become a missionary, I pray that I would do so and not look back.

My job is to go to college full-time, volunteer to do multimedia for two services on Sunday, and I got a new job working at Wal-Mart part time. I am going to be a cashier who makes $7.40 an hour. I am working there because I need the money to help pay for my books in the Fall semester.

it's great how some of you are doing stuff that you like.
i'll be quitting my job soon, if i'm accepted into a course that i'll be applying for (and that is while finishing my current course)

i don't know whether to laugh or cry... it'll be another 3 years of study.

I do what I was born and raised in...the dairy industry. I was feeding baby calves at 5 on up, and started milking for my dad at 12. I vowed I would not stay there, but at 20 I got a job working for a local (and very small) dairy. I stayed there for almost 3 years, until I got hired at a much nicer facility. I've been there almost exactly 2 years (hire date was 08/01/03). I went to college while working there...got a degree in Criminal Justice and decided that I no longer wanted to be a cop. My boss kept pestering me to accept a full time position, complete w/ health insurance which I desperately needed. It's been like a yo-yo, with me pestering them for 40 hours a week. I finally got what I was after, and should finally make enough income to save some money and move out on my own. I've talked with the herd manager about getting into a supervisor position somewhere else, and he thinks I could handle it. Still, if in a year my boss comes and offers me more money I'll probably stay there!
Is it my childhood dream? No way! I wanted to be a cop, and that was it! But life and the experiences it brings has a funny way of changing plans. I excel where I'm at, and I feel comfortable there. I'm largely unsupervised, and have to problem solve on a regular basis. So it's not a terribly boring job.
If it works out, I'll start training horses and eventually phase out of cattle. But for now, it makes sense to stay there.

well, I guess since I started this thread I should throw in my $0.02. I'm still working at my childhood dream....I am currently a vet assistant working towards my Vet Tech Degree, my dream had been to be a vet at one point but I've decided that I'd be happier as a vet tech. Actually, I'll be happy doing whatever as long as it involves animals.

I was just wondering what other people's views were about their job cuz it's always seemed like I'm part of a minority that doesn't choose their profession based on money. Ever since I started working when I was 14 it was really important to me that I enjoy my job and when I was 18 God blessed me with an awesome opportunity with a nation-wide pet store that I worked at for 5 years and for my age I was making some awesome money (didn't handle it wisely ) and had some really nice benefits. But I got to the point that I started counting the minutes till it was time to go home before I even got to work that morning, and to me all the money in the world isn't worth that. I left it for my current job 2 years ago~ my pay got cut to less than half and I have absolutely no benefits, but my boss is pretty cool and I'm doing what I love to do.

I am currently employed by Uncle Sam, yes i am in the US Army and i love it. After a grueling 15 weeks of training i was sent on my way. Benifits are unmatched, pretty much all health care is free as well as dental. I have free housing and food, though the housing isnt much and the food isnt that great, its still food and a place to live. Plus on top of that my job is FUN!!! I regularly get to shoot weapons including my M4 Carbine, M9 Beretta 9mm, and i get to drive a multi-million dollar vehicle, the Bradley M2A3. This job isnt for everyone, the 1 hour 30 minute pt in the morning can get quite grueling including hundreds of pushups 50+ pullups countless situps and flutter kicks, but it is all worth it. I LOVE MY JOB!

Because I qualified for work study and by the time I got my lazy self out of bed it was the only job left on campus.

But, it's only temporary, so no soul-searching necessary just yet.

still have the dirty part time job that i had forever in college. i duno, it pays for the necessities (phone, gas, car bill, soon to be rent) but i dont want to dig into savings for the 'wants'. i sort of lost interest in psychology as a field, so i've been re-examining what to do. its probably my best bet, but i dont want a job where i have to wear a suit and tie to "maintain the professional image."

the hard part is when everyone pulls and pushes you in all sorts of directions then when you're through it all, they say, "ok we're done, you make your own decisions now, but don't do this, this, nor this."

I have my job cuz I wanted to live in Korea. Honestly.
It's super-easy to get a teaching position over here. (I teach English to Korean elementary kids.)

I've been here since graduating uni in 2001. Loving it.

I work at a steakhouse as a server. Been working here almost 5 years. Its the easiest and only job I have had. I started as a busser then to a bartender then cashier now server. It is really easy and I make good money but it is only while in college.

Went to college to be a teacher. I also coached an Under 14 girls soccer team. During the summer I was a night manager of a fast food restaurant. I had teachers coming to me asking for part time jobs because they didn't make any money. I immediately changed my mind about my carreer. Joined the Air Force, traveled around the world, left the AF and found a great job. And here I am. Now, if you told me when I was in HS that this was the path I was going to take, I would have said you were insane.

I chose the health care field mostly 'cause I like the life sciences and find it rewarding to directly help people. Aside from that I imagine the fact that it allows you a fair amount of mobility and a consistently high income helps as well.

I joined the Air Force 'cause I'm a sucker.

I want to be a paramedic and/or professional firefighter. If not, I might get into counselling.

I went to university last year and failed miserably because I was extremely homesick, got involved with the wrong people, etc. I was a Psych major and really liked it. Then I decided I was going to live at home and try community college, Human Services (psychology/sociology) is a 1 year course and then I was going to take Addictions Services afterwards... Well, Human Services was full and I ended up in Office Information Technology.. starting Sept. 6! It sounds miserable to be honest, MATH AND ACCOUNTING. Please pray for me.. I went to summer school for gr. 10 and 12 math to get something higher than a just pass!!! AHHHH!!!!!!!!

There's a good paramedic school 5 hours from here... maybe next year!

So, that job that I posted about........I quit. Not because I didn't like it or because I couldn't do it or had problems with people there, but because my dads health is poor. He had a mini stroke this last Sunday and I've decided that I am too far away from home. I need to be here for my dad and spend more time with him, because anything could happen. His health has been poor (I kid you not) all summer long, every month since May. Every month the doctors have found something else. Inflammatory arthritis, diabetes, asthma, and now this stroke.

I just quit last night. I am going to miss everyone at work, especially the customers. But family comes first.
