  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Why do you avoid John 1:1?

That link is NEWS to me and I am a member of the Greek Orthodox Church.

Below is a modification of what I posted on that thread link.

Devout Greek Orthodox have always held the Greek Bible in the highest regard. The Church from ancient times has always read John 1: 1-17 at Pascha services on Holy Saturday Night (The Easter Vigil). Pascha, celebrating the Resurrection of our Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ, is considered to be the Feast of Feasts. This Gospel passage is considered the most important, because the Church has always used it as the revelation from God that the Eternal Word of God is The Christ, the God-Man.

"In the beginning was the WORD, and the WORD was with GOD, and the WORD WAS GOD. He was in the BEGINNING WITH GOD, all things were made THROUGH HIM, and without Him was not anything made that was made. In Him was LIFE, and the LIFE was the LIGHT OF MEN. The LIGHT shines in the darrkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. ...

And the WORD became FLESH and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld His glory, glory as of the ONLY SON FROM THE FATHER. (John bore witness to Him, and cried, "This was He of whom I said, 'He who comes after me ranks before me, for He was before me.'") And from His fullness have we all received, grace upon grace. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ."

Incidentally, this passage from the beginning of the Holy Gospel of St. John is avoided by Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses. These groups officially deny that The Christ is the Eternal Word of God, part of the Holy Trinity, who is the Uncreated and Eternal God. We Christians, on the other hand, worship a Triune God: One God in Three Divine Persons: the Father, The Son, and the Holy Spirit. The All-Holy Trinity is a holy mystery that our puny little human brains will never fully understand. All we can do is  down in adoration. Holy, Holy, Holy, art Thou of God! Why are three Holies said? This is done in honor of the Triune God, Whom we adore and magnify.
Amen. Amen. Amen.

These discussions are impossible for me. It's like, somebody says "Everybody knows that you eat with your ears!" and your supposed to convice them that they shouldn't stick a toothbrush in their ear. Where do you begin??? Oy!

The Father is my hope; the Son is my refuge; the Holy Spirit is my protector. O All-Holy Trinity, glory to Thee.

I loved reading the poster who offered to give the Orthodox a history lesson about Nicea. It certainly makes sense, as we all know the patristic period is an oft overlooked one in Orthodoxy. Maybe just a quick reading of the Da Vinci code would give us the facts we need.
Hah!!!

I love these conversations:

"Group X believes this."
"I belong to Group X and I've never even heard that."
"Well, you don't understand what your group teaches."
"Here's our website, it outlines what we believe."
"I won't consider information from your biased website."
"You won't consider information about my church if it's from my church's website?"
"Right, it has to be from my church's website."
"Your church is the authority on what my church teaches?"
"Right."

Especially those of you who are Greek-speaking Trinitarians.

Some very profound questions in the OP. Things I never knew.

Thank you for your input, preferably on the thread in the link.

The Incarnation (John 1:1) is at the very basis of what we Orthodox believe. It is central to my role as an iconographer, and it informs everything we do.

There is no talking to these heretics. With one hand they deny the authority of the Councils of the Church when it comes to Trinitarian thought, but with the other rely completely on the Councils of the Church to elucidate the canon of the Holy Scriptures. What a dissociative way to look at things.
