  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Why do we still sin?

Scripture says it best.

Galatians 5:[16]- "This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh...[25] If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit."

1John 3:[6]- "Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not:"

John 4:[23]- "But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.[24] God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth."

Rather than trying not to sin, in which we'll truly fail, we are to follow after God's Spirit, then we won't sin.

One last point I would like to cover is this….. Jesus Christ did not die on the cross so we would keep living in Sin. Jesus Christ shed his blood, died, and rose again so we can have forgiveness, his righteousness becomes our righteousness for the judgment day. We receive his Holy Spirit through believing in the gospel of Jesus Christ. We are going to stumble on our walk with God, but you need to know that if you are stuck in sin, Jesus Christ gave us the power in Him through the Holy Spirit to be completely transformed into a new creature and be able to stand tall against temptation. Above all else, just remember one thing Gods Word is truth, and measure everything by it. It took getting the true fear of God in me and facing something I could not handle to make me a new creature in Christ Jesus. Don’t live content with anything less than what Gods Word says. I wish I had someone to teach me truly about Jesus Christ and beat it into me early.
So from my experiences these past few months, I know God is true to his Word, I know Jesus Christ is the ONLY way, truth and life.

The posts above are great and cover most of what I wanted to say, but one thing I would add is that sin still exists because God is still in the process of redeeming everything. If he wanted to end sin (both the kind that happens to us, and the kind we commit ourselves) then he would have to do away with the sinners, and it seems like he's not ready to do that.
So I guess what I'm saying is that I think that, though God hates sin, he is more invested in redemption than stopping our sin for the time being.

The flesh (sarx).

Yes, it is the flesh.

But let me now pose the question in a different manner:

Suppose you work at a job that pays $20/hour.
Another business opens up a block away, offering the exact same work, but for $2,000/hour. Suppose you are married and have five children.
If you declined the new job, what would be the reason?

I don't know if I'm right or not but it seems to me that my situation is hopeless from where I stand right now. I feel like my only hope is to plead with Jesus to save me, daily if possible, and hope He will lead me where I need to go and give me the power I need.

Perhaps.
Or maybe we don't think the new employer can be trusted. "It's too good to be true." "It's a scam." "Don't trust him."
When we sin, we are saying the exact same things about God.
Each time we sin, we are holding onto that $20/hour job.

Simon Peter said it best:
"Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life."

When we sin we definitely are not trusting in God, but we can believe God is trustworthy and still sin.

It's tempting to write....
"I've looked at this from both sides now,
From up and down and still somehow
It's the illusions I recall...."
Best if I stop there.

Reared and remaining in a form of Arminianism way too long, I started questioning it and leaning toward the Reformed idea heavily, where I remain. I cannot claim I believe all of the Reformed doctrine, but it certainly seems to come closer to biblical salvation than does the first.

I am certainly not perfect. Far from it. But the brand of Arminianism I was in professed perfection but could not live it. And while they could not live it, they refused to repent of their sins, which is horrifying.

I recognize that some believe that even their very breath is sin, because it is not perfect before G-d. I am not of that persuasion. But there are many days that I can look back upon and wonder, "Where was the sin? Did I sin?" And I don't remember sinning. This is not to lift myself up, because I KNOW I am so extremely far from perfect; it is more a matter of concern, because if I don't know how I had sinned, then my repentance is empty.

One thing that is helping me is this: as I age, I fear becoming like my mother, so I pray that G-d will prevent this, and He is showing me things about myself that need His work. Daily, He points out something. Daily, I am disappointed with my attitudes and actions but gratified that He is teaching me! I am learning, bless His Name!

My main sin problem seems to be not only what I do, but how I am not being joyful and loving and compassionate > I get too much into negative and suspicious things in my imagination. These are anti-love, not only no-no pleasures.

Only God can change me to be His way in love, so I am personally and tenderly sharing with Him in His rest while caring really for any and all people and with Christian brothers and sisters I am relating kindly and sensitively . . . prayerfully so I love people the way God wants and guides us what to do to love each person . . . any person :)

My mind is a battle ground, then, but what's happening in my mind is connected with my character, I would say. I need how God's love cures my nature.

"Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world." (1 John 4:17)

But I can be self-righteous about this, looking down on others who are wrong, somehow. Being self-righteous, wanting to be more than others and look down on others . . . uh-uh . . . yeah, I can do this )d:

"nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock." (1 Peter 5:3)

"with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love," (Ephesians 4:2)

We need "longsuffering" for relating with our Christian family. Even more mature Christians and good leaders can be wrong, and we need to be ready with "longsuffering" and forgiveness :)

"He can have compassion on those who are ignorant and going astray, since he himself is also subject to weakness." (Hebrews 5:2)

So, in my failure I can feel for others who are failing, and pray with hope for them, too :)

So, if the sins you are concerned about are mainly no-no pleasures . . . possibly you are letting your attention be kept away from how we need to find out how to love. There are sins against how to love; we need to deal with not only our wrong pleasure activities but also our sins against how to love.
