Why Do We Bother?

This is for the folks, like me, who are drawn here and other places like these.

Let me put my assumptions on the table:
These people are fundamentally dishonest.
These people revel in their own ignorance.
These people have no interet, at all, in ever reaching anything that you or I would consider a 'reasonable' conclusion.

So, why do we bother coming here? Why do we spend the time doing research so that one of these boneheads can pulls something like "Bananas are designed for our hands!!!" out of their wazoo?

They are not interested in having a debate. Not at all. For crying out loud, they don't even take the time to comprehend what a "theory" is. They use fake language, non-existant logic, fallacies, regurgitate lies, say things that would make my three year old go 'that don't make no sense' and on and on and on and on...

and yet we still feel compelled to try to talk to these people like they are adults. Now, I am not bashing Christians here. I have friends who I respect and admire that are Christians. I am not talking about them, I am talking about people who say "why don't we speak monkey" or who believe evolution means you are born one way and die in another form.

At some point, I look at my child and say, "Ok..as much as I wish you could grasp this, it is obvious that this discussion is one you are yet not ready for" and I walk away.

So, all you heathenistic pagan whatevers...throw me your theories and ideas...what compells us to this conversation? Why do we even bother?

I mean, if they were sitting there crossing their arms and sticking out their bottom lips and saying "the grass is purple because I believe it is so" would you really go out and do research on the light spectrum, and how it works in relation to grass, or would you circle your finger around your ear and move onto a more meaningful conversation.

Because, to be honest, we are the morons in this. These people have no interest in logic, and we keep trying to use it. They have no interest in history and we keep bringing it up. They have no use for reality and we keep insisting we base our arguments around it. We are the kid who gets all worked up about "his topic" never realizing that those disagreeing with him are only grasping at those outragous and silly straws simply to get at him? Are we being played? If not, what in the world are we doing here?

I just seem to have strange obsession with being right! LOL! In all seriousness, I am drawn here to hopefully bring some people the truth. Creationism is a nice story, but it's just not realistic. It's so hard to get that into some people's brains!

I think I may be a [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse]. Although, when the scientists here correct a creationist mistake, I occasionally learn something new. And that's always cool.

You are making the mistake of assuming that creationists actually care about how the Earth came into existence and so forth.

They don't.

They don't at all.

Not one bit.

Creationists are only interested in showing that the reading of the Bible that they are used to is correct.

They are arguing about the Bible you are arguing about how the world came into existence.

These are entirely different and unrelated things.

They aren't concerned with the particulars of what the Bible says, only that it says it (at least in their interpretation).

I don't think that science and the Bible cancel each other out.
I just think they are in different realms.
Science describes how things happen.
The Bible tells us why they happen.
Neither one can tell us everything.
Science and the Bible can be in harmony with one another.

I come here in part because some of the most interesting science around the Internet is brought forth in these discussions, which range well past my work's pursuit (minimizing energy demands on industrial coatings, adhesive and ink systems, by way of applied polymer chemistry). Check out ChordatesLegacy's Miocene thread in C&E as an example. Its an awesome walk-through, and a boat-load of fun to read for its science content. I come back daily, just to browse whatever content he's added since my last visit...

Holy quest to defend the truth? :D

I'm here because I hate people to be so wrong. And of course I think evolution is cool, science in general is cool, the universe is wonderful and I want others to realise this too. Not all creationists are dishonest and uninterested in learning - the people who are no longer creationists stand as examples. So I firmly believe it's not a futile effort.

I also discovered that debating creationists is incredibly useful to me: first, it's leading me to a deeper and more critical understanding of my own views, and second, I think it's been teaching me a lot about debating.

Plus, with the range of scientists we have here it's impossible not to pick up all sorts of interesting stuff. Me likes learning interesting stuff.

And of course it's loads of fun. (Partly because I very rarely feel I've lost a debate here... see, my ego needs crevo :D)

No offense but you deny Christ and claim to be a Pagan which is well, let other people speak up about this because I'm too harsh on Paganism. You want to bring truth to the people, which is impossible because there is no truth in you. Everybody starts out in their quest for truth at ground zero, which is where you are at, it's not too late to begin, but time is definitely NOT on your hands. Worship wisely.

This is what you can find at a pagan procession.

I'd say the same thing to you. Pagans have just as much evidence for their religion as you do. I don't care how much you believe in something, it doesn't influence the world one bit.

'Course, we know the Pagans are wrong, the only true god is Cthulhu.

This is not the KKK. This is the Good Friday procession at the Almalfi Cathedral in Italy. It looks scary and intimidating because we've been brought up to associate these white hoods with the KKK and see it as a symbol for evil. To the people of Almalfi the hoods are a symbol for good and are worn by the faithful.

Posting pictures of slightly outlandish (to you) ceremonies and saying 'Ooh look at the scary people they must be teh evil1!!1!' only highlights your own ignorance and prejudices. This is assuming the photo of the pagan ceremony is actually a pagan ceremony and not some LARP convention.

I get a kick out of the extremely black and white responses from fundamentalists.

I used to spend a lot of time writing out well researched, documented and thought provoking responses to ridiculously simple debates.

I realized that the fundamentalists don't spend any effort in challenging their pre-conceived beliefs. So, I've stopped writing long responses.

Something as simple as the the ark story, I've seriously challenged people on the problem of insects.

They corner themselves, then claim God could have re-created the insects after the flood, only to be reminded that they believe the Bible is inerrant, complete and infallible. There is but one creation story.

This is when they ignore me and dis-regard the problem of insects within their literal belief in the creation story.

It is fruitless, they are content in their blissful ignorance and that is that.

I generally throw a few one liners at them, which garners the same number of responses.

I do feel sorry for the children of these people that are being taught to dis-trust science, that there is a well orchestrated world wide conspiracy to propagate evolution to destroy faith and that the Bible is an infallible account of religion, history and science.
