Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve.
Does this really answer the OP's question about why people hate others? Why people who say they represent The Love of the Universe (God) show hate to those who disagree with them? I'd say it was out of character for God to act this way (as described in the OP). I'd also say that someone who acts this way and is trying to follow God hasn't gotten very far in this particular area.

I really don't see how people can believe in something like a god.
It all seems rather fake to me.

But... what I was wondering is why so many people have problems with gays. Before I broke up with my girlfriend, I had a couple of run-ins with some fundamentalists and being called a sinner and that I was going to hell. For having somebody I really liked.

I appreciate that a majority of Christians are not like this, but I was wondering why it happens?

Those who are very insecure, will openly and directly attack others.

Those who are slightly less insecure will indirectly attack, by over-defending. They will call this defence, but it is really pre-emptive strike behaviour.

Only those who are very secure indeed will behave as Christ behaved, and neither attack nor defend against attack. This is the way to love your enemies and do good to those who hate you. It is very, very difficult indeed.

Those who are insecure in faith will attack other faiths.

Those who are insecure in their sexuality will be most rabid in attacking those of a different sexual persuasion. Which is why some of the most strident and inflexible anti-gay preachers have recently been disclosed to engage in gay behaviour themselves.

It is only by behaving as Christ behaved that we follow in his footsteps.

We have heard only one side of this issue. There is no indication of why those people responded in that manner to the OP.

In any case, if these "christians" did in fact get pushy, or mean spirited they did so in violation of Christ's teachings.

There can be no question about the sin of homosexuality. It is a sin and has always been a sin, it will always be a sin. Such behavior is contrary to God's plan for mankind.

However, attacking someone for any sin, including homosexuality, is wrong. Christ teaches that we are to love the sinner, but hate the sin.

Sometimes it is difficult to draw that line. Personally, I have no hatred towards homosexuals. I worry about the state of their salvation, but under no circumstances will I ever be mean to one of them, or attack them. I will attempt to educate them about their lifestyle and its long term consequences.

Other than that we, as Christians, should leave them in peace. That goes for all types of sins and sinners as well. None of us gets thru one day without sinning and for any one of us to be critical of anyone else for their sin is sheer Hypocrisy.

Before I was saved, I was very offended that Christians found my immorality, well, immoral. The enemy convinced me that they hated me. Well, they didn't hate me - they hated what I was doing to myself. I did not understand what they meant until I was born again and capable of seeing what a horrible life I had been leading. :)

Desparate4Him2--wonderful post.

Sasu--Christians dislike sin...indeed hate might be an appropriate word as well.

We do not however hate 'people' ... to the contrary we hate the sin because we know it 'hurts' the person. **sigh.

Prayers that you might come to know God and keep searching until a complete truth is found.

God cannot be proven or disproven, except by experience.

This a self-defeating statement. If god cannot be proven or disproven except by experience, then god can be proven or disproven by experience.

If god cannot be proven or disproven, then nothing can be proven or disproven.

Note that I am at this point saying god not God.

My experience proves God to me. My experience does not prove God to you or anyone else. It becomes, therefore, a paradox. I know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, but I cannot prove it. I just know.

This is not faith, this is relationship.

Makes sense to me. :)

If god cannot be proven or disproven, then nothing can be proven or disproven.

This is not true. Any scientific experiment becomes meaningless if it is incapable of being proven to be false.

Any experiment which does bear such possibility, is a valid test, regardless of whether God is or not.

Some Christians are known to get seemingly 'overly' angry in many situations. They seem to be mad at the world.

There is a good reason for this, even though these types of Christians don't yet understand God's sovereignty and the peace of God.

As I heard it said, the reason is because they develop a heightened sense of right and wrong, holiness and sinfulness. With this increased sensitivity, they become keenly aware of just how wicked sin is, and they come to hate it all that much more. As a result, some will wrongly attempt to punish sin themselves without the right to do so. People, who aren't police officers or government officials of any kind, will attempt to take things into their own hands and mistreat/punish people who sin in a way that especially offends them.

I don't mean to excuse their actions, but I would like to give some reasoning behind it. This is a POSSIBLE reason, among many; ultimately, we cannot know why people respond the way they do without knowing them intimately, and getting their side of the story.

they hate god because god willed it so.

Hi Galgameth, I'm not sure what you were replying to in this, so I may be writing something out of context.

God does not will anyone to hate him. He has hardened the hearts of people.

Before I was a Christian, I was still loved, for God so loved the world that He gave his only son.

God does not will people to hate him.

It is our own hearts that are desperately wicked.

Can you show me a scripture that states that God wills men to hate him?

Rom 5:6-10
6 For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.
7 For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die.
8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him.
10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.

All Christians have to struggle with the tension between being loving and accepting versus holding to a high standard morally speaking.

Many Christians interpet the bible as teaching that homosexuality is immoral. Therefore it falls into the same catagory as stealing or lieing and other behaviors which are considered immoral.

So the struggle begins....Do I love and accept or do I give constructive criticism to people and tell them that what they are doing is wrong.

The basic belief is that you have a choice and that you are making the wrong choice by being gay. If they can inspire you to change then they have accomplished a good work.

Where it turns to hate oftentimes is because of people's natural reaction to thinking that they are right and that you are wrong. If you don't see it their way , then they put you in a catagory as an enemy of God.

 Hey Sasu

Im not really sure why some people take such a strong stance...it's taken me a long time to form my opinion here because i have both gay and bi-sexual friends and i would never dream of hating them because of their orientation. God loves us all and recently i met a friend of a friend who is a christian and she struggled as a teen because she thought she was gay, she said he parents and her family prayed constantly. One night she said she that she was laying on her bed when she felt gods presence in the room - she said she felt like she was being lifted from her bed and then a huge release...she said in that moment she knew that those feelings had been taken from her and to this day she says she has never had an attraction to a female. As a non christian you could doubt her, but when you have seen the power and truly understand the power of god - you can see that they have a choice...god can and will heal them if they want to...but that doesnt mean we love them any less. So i dont know why people hate them but most christians dont at all.
