I think that is a good question, worthy of exploring. As a non-Christian, I do not believe Christianity is the Right and One True religion (if I did, I probably would be Christian!) and so it isn't an issue for me. I think it's great though if you explore that idea fully and find out what really makes you a Christian - or makes you believe whatever it is you believe. I believe that virtually everyone of any faith comes to a point similar to this, it's a good point to come to since it can either make your faith in your chosen path ultimately stronger, or it can lead you to something else you do believe in.

Well said, nephthys!

I personally was raised Catholic, but started to question my faith and did a tremendous amount of soul-searching. This led me to Wicca  . Wicca is "true" for me as other religions are "true" for other people. It's why various people subscribe to their respective beliefs, because they find truth in it.

Brightest Blessings,
Krysia :pink:

You know what I think is sooo funny, if you trace other religion's (the big ones) orgin it brings you back to the Jewish God, that same Christian God...interesting...if you don't believe me, do the study on where it originated from and where did the person get those ideals from. You don't have to agree, just do the research...you can see the connection between other religions and what the bible says but a spinoff and their own versions... Even the tribes in African who "supposedly never came in contact with a christian" creation stories are in the same context...Maybe it's just me, but I don't debate or argue so have fun. God loves you.

I think the biggest cause of people worshipping Satan is that they only read as far a Job. If they'd read the Bible all the way through they'd see they were betting on a losing horse.

I do not however think that Satanists or Church of Satan members constitute more than a few hundred world wide and a lot of them are left-over Hippies like LeVay or kids just trying to rebellious.

Hey kids! I you want to be a rebel try atheism! The dues are a lot cheaper and you get a cool EAC sticker for your notebook.

I disagree. I think faith is a bad reason to believe in anything.
Faith is the perfect reason to believe something.
But reason is the best reason to KNOW something.

Do religious persons "believe" or do they "know"? And then, the timeless question, what is the epistemological status of religious experience?

Why do you have to stop on the Jewish God? You can trace back their god to more ancient, polytheistic, roots (that's visible even in the Bible).

Do the research and you will see what I mean. The bible tells you that they worship worthless gods, when they were not patient they made their own god, you can see that when Moses went to talk to God and the Jews in the O/T got bored and made up their own idols and worshipped them.

There are a lot of reasons why some people worship Satan.

1. Power and control - Some belief that a worship of an actual "Satan" will provide them with power beyond their wildest dreams, power to get away with illegal things, power to have the girlfriend/boyfriend they want, etc. Some groups incorporate Satanic magic (as opposed to Wicca) as a way to get what you want - wealth, fame, etc. Others believe that LaVey's non-religious Satanism empowers them by promoting self-esteem, independance, etc.

2. Revenge - (In with power) Seeking Satanic powers is, for some, a way of getting revenge. Want to offend your overly-religious family? Try Satanism. Love to have revenge on the high school bully? Some think that Satanism will enable them to carry out revenge plots.

3. Self-expression and rebellion - For some self-expression means knee-jerk reactions...such as joining a Satanic group, reading LaVey's Bible, etc in order to shock religious parents. Others like the attention they get when they announce they are Satanic (good attention is better then nothing at all). Some rebel by doing something their family or church abhors. Others merely identify with the offerings of different Satanic paths.

4. Sincere belief - There are a lot of types of Satanism. LaVey Satanism resembles somewhat humanistic hedonism. It's fun. It's looking out for number one. Some of the messages are easy to buy into. Religious Satanism, actual worship of a deity, is attractive as well. Some really believe a Satan exists, that Satan will grant them wishes, that they will be happy in Hell, that all the cool people will be in Hell, etc. There are individual reasons for believing in these concepts.

5. Love of the exotic, unknown, different - Satanism is absolutely not mainstream. It's very unique with very different ideas then many mainstream religions. There are several types as well...each with unique practices and ideas. It is attractive because it's unusual, because it's exciting and new. Few kids have been raised in a Satanic household. For them, sometimes, Satanism is attractive just because oft he rumor and mystery surrounding it. LaVey Satanism is interesting...just look at the make-belief life of LaVey himself!

That said..I'm not a Satanist. Each has individual reasons for their belief or participation.

Religous Satanism has nothing to do with Satan, and LeVay was a religous satanist. I belive there is something like 10,000 members of the curch of satan world wide, There are atlease 50 that go to the church in my town...

Those Kids worshiping satan are just teenagers trying to get back at mommy and daddy.

And btw Reading Job in the bible was one of my deciding factors in becoming agnoistic...
We had to read Job in 8th grade bible class, that is quite possiblly the worst ****ing thing I have ever seen....

Why was that the determining factor in you becoming agnostic? and how on earth, could you have decided in the 8th grade, that you didnt like what you read well enough, to believe that it was all false? and can we try to refrain from either swearing or typing in the stars, to clarify a certain word please.. I'm choosing not to edit that out, but please watch the typing, guys..
thanks

I'm familiar with the differences between CoS (and others groups that are more into self-actualization and hedonism) and Temple of Set (and other groups that worship Satan as a deity). I agree with you about the kids just trying to rebell which was my semi-flippant comment about only reading the Bible as far as Job. They only read far enough to see a James Deanesque lawyer who has the power to mess with people and think he's cool.

But like I said, if they really want to be a rebel, be atheist. There's no dues and we don't wear stupid back and red outfits during stupid ceremonies, nor do we round around naked getting chigger bites everywhere like the neo-pags. We're so rebellious, we don't even need no stinkin' cannonical literature!

Two reasons, in my opinion. Firstly, there are those individuals who do it for the shock value. They say they're satanists (or anarchists, Wiccans, or what-have you) because it is controvertial, and that controvertiality makes it cool. It is pure passive rebellion. As for the second variety, I would say that their Satan is not neccessarily your Satan, so the reasons you see for not worshipping that being do not hold true for them, as it is a separate entity, or is viewed through a lense different from yours.

True, but I'm an atheist because that is all I can be, not due to rebellion. I'm also a (metaphorically) card-carrying Anarchist, for the same reason.

Why do some people like to worship Satan?!!

Well, for many reaons, for example:

First of all, they are idiots, no sensible creature will worship HIS BIGGEST ENEMY!!

Second, Satan has some special power that isnt in humans and he may help them with some extraordinary ways, they love that!!

Third, he wont ask them to be good or to be away from what they like, for example: alcohols, women, illegal moeny ...etc. as it is his job to make and encourage humans to do such things to put them in trouble with GOD!!!

What about the importance of Satan to Christianity? With out absolute belief in Satan, the whole structure of beliefs that holds Christianity up falls flat, bringing the dogma holding together that religion, down with it.

Christians may not be praying to Satan, but when your complete belief structure depends upon the reality of Satan and Hell in order for it to even exist, that's right up there, pretty close to worshipping Satan.

It wasmy deciding factor because I am not really sure if there is a god or not, and I really don't care. After reading Job I realized that there was no way the christian god was a loving god if he would torture a poor man to prove a point....

And on a side note other person who was talking about worshiping satan.

Satan comes from a Hebrew Term Set which means evil. English speaking people mispronouced it and called it satan, they called the satanic religon setnist for there beliefs.
