Why do Progressives have such contradictory views on marriage?

I agree with @public hermit. The criticism is not that marriage should cease to exist, but that it should be reformed so that it is not oppressive to women. (A point which I think has more than a touch of validity).

Oddly, same-sex marriage doesn't have the same problems of power imbalance between the sexes.

I guess we have to find the right balance.

I won't disagree with that, but I would say women need to have a voice in how they decide to realize that balance.

If it were not for immigration, the United States would have serious problem maintains population.

I don't see a problem. Let the immigrants come. Most everybody on this forum that are citizens of the US are the descendants of immigrants. God bless them all. I think we should make a path for citizenship that is much more accessible, since we need them.

The problem is a country shouldn’t need to depend on immigration to maintain its population. That’s not a good sign. I have no problem with immigration. As a matter of fact, I used to be an immigration lawyer.

Why shouldn't we depend on them?

Well it’s common knowledge in my generation, and before. Progressives used to say that a married woman was like a bird in a cage.
Have you ever considered that some women may have felt this way because they had lousy husbands?

It’s ok to depend on immigrants. However, I don’t think it wise to completely depend on immigration.

If we allow them to become citizens then we will depending on citizens. Problem solved.

Absolutely, I often tell men what Paul said. How husbands must love their wives the way Jesus loves his church. I am disgusted when I see husbands mistreat and oppress their wives. It seems like few Christians have the view of marriage that Jesus and Paul described.

Until they also become infected and stop having babies.

That's still not an issue; it simply means we'll have more room to welcome the "stranger." Isn't God good?!

Too much immigration can be a bad thing. I live in Miami, and the massive immigration has really altered life here. When you go shopping or even go to a doctors office, you will often find that no employee can speak English. I’m bilingual so I’m able to deal with it. It can be annoying because my primary language is English. However, this problem causes my son a lot of stress because he does not speak Spanish. Personally, I don’t think it’s right that he have trouble finding English speakers in his own country. The problem also goes the other way. There are many immigrants in Miami that want to speak English, but it’s so easy to get by on just Spanish, they are never able to learn.

I understand there is a time period for acclimation. My grandmother was a child of Ukrainian immigrants; her mother hardly spoke any English. My grandmother did but had a clear accent. By and large, most children of immigrants learn the language of the wider culture.

I feel like this converation is derailing your thread, and that is not my intention.

I would make a distinction in the definitions of a progressive and a leftist. They're
not the same.

Progressives see a need to change something for the better and this requires an open
mind to ideas.

Leftist on the other hand, only see their own ideology and seek to impose it on
others.

I see them as different also. Progressives do want to change for the better, but they can’t figure out what better means. Also, their minds are so open, their brains fall out. I wouldn’t use the word left to describe the other group. Furthermore, Progressives have shown tine and again they want to impose their ever changing ideology on others. They don’t even like free speech because it threatens their ideology.

I think you've confused "progressive," with "leftist," which is common.

Progressives I've known have a clear vision of what they want to see changed.
Sometimes, they don't see the consequences that will take place if those changes
took place. It's why both progressives and concervatives need to be open to each
other and share their opinions without labeling each other.

This doesn't happen with leftists. If I share my position on an issue that is different
than theirs, I'm automatically labeled as a MAGA Trump supporter, even though
I never voted for Trump or any radical right politician.

There are Progressives and there are Liberals, and both are Leftists. While I often disagree with Liberals, at least I can say they are rational, and I don't always disagree with them either. Progressives, on the other hand are lunatics in my opinion. I completely disagree that they have a clear vision of what they want to see changed. They are always changing their minds about what is good and what is bad. For example, when I was kid, we were taught to stop calling black people colored, or Negroes. We were supposed to call them black. Now we can't call them black anymore, now we are supposed to call them African Americans. What about Freedom of Speech. Progressives used to love Freedom of Speech. Now they say it's bad and they loved Biden's short-lived "Ministry of Truth", and they hate that Elon Musk bought Twitter. What about how awful it used to be for a male to physically intimidate a woman. I guess you don't remember Rick Santorum approaching Hilary Clinton on a debate stage, and all the flack he received from the progressives intimidating her physically. Now Progressives want men competing against women in sports to embarrass and intimidate women. Well, almost all sports. You'll never see a man competing in women's gymnastics because in that particular sport they would lose. However, I would really enjoy seeing a man on the uneven bars. I think it would be hilarious.

Bottom line is that Progressives are always changing their mind on what they are progressing to. And as G.K. Chesterton put it (I'm paraphrasing), "If you keep changing your goal, then how can you measure your progress?"

Watch this video then come back and argue.

FYI, to see the need for change on an issue, requires a progressive mindset. One that is open to ideas.
The conservative is comfortable with the status quo and reluctant to change what they are already
comfortable with.

A leftist, on the other hand, isn't open to ideas other than their own and will use the government to
create laws to force their ideology onto society.

This really just a question of semantics. What Mr. Prager calls a leftist, I call a Progressive. It’s a fact that both are on the political left just like both capitalists and conservatives are on the right. G.K. Chesterton would agree with my definitions. But that’s ok, a rose by any other name would still smell sweet, and both progressives or leftists stink.

As for conservatives, I would point out there are two types. There is the one you described. However, I am another kind. A kind that I am tempted to call the real progressive. I want to conserve the morals Jesus and the Apostles gave the world in the first century. Those are fixed goals we have never truly reached. For example, Racism should have never existed in Christendom. It runs contrary to what we learned from Jesus and the Apostles. I want to conserve those first century Christian principles, and I want us to strive to follow those principles more faithfully. My goals are fixed, and therefore I can measure my progress in achieving my goals. Progressives, or as you call them Leftists, don’t really want to make progress. They want to go back to a sexual immoral society, a society that kills babies, a segregated society, a society without liberty.

It doesn't seem like you're open to hearing a different perspective. You'd rather just insult people. OK.

Did I lie about anything? The truth is all that matters. If the truth offends you don’t blame me. But if I did lie or make a mistake please let me know. I love to be corrected when I am wrong, for the simple fact that I hate being wrong.
