  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Why do people hate Jews?

Not everyone hates the Jews, for starters. I've never in my life hated a Jew or the Jews. No person I knew growing up did so, either. I've since met one Jew hater, and as nobody likes him at all, his POV is constantly derided and metaphorically spat upon.

I know anti-Semitism exists in the world, but I no more understand its basis than anyone else appears to.

Reasons for anti-Semitism vary.

Partly it's just tribalsim--dislike of anyone different.

In the middle east, it's mainly political, with an underlayer of religious differences.

In Europe, I think it's mainly left over from centuries of church teaching that the Jews killed Jesus.

In America, some is religiously based, but I think more is just due to envy. Jewish people are seen as influential and successful. I see similar attitudes towards some Asians.

Well, i think the man reason why people hate them is because the myth that they killed the so-called Jesus. (which is ironic since it was the Romans that, according to the legend, killed him. Not the Jews.)
Another reason is because of envy. Jews have money and are influential. In the Islamic world, they hate them because they just came in and took Israel. (It was actually the UN and the UK, but the Jews are the ones blamed.) Also, Judaism is a small yet well known religion. It is perfect to use as scapegoat since everyone knows it yet they can barely defend. And last but not least, indoctrination. Fundamentalist Christians and Muslims teach their kids to hate Jews (and practically everything else) So the kids grow to be adults and hate (without even a reason) Jews.

I don't hate Jews. But above posts have addressed it adequately... in the Christian world, it's because of the common perception that Jews killed Jesus. Which is a wild miscalculation of teachings, because Christianity would have us believe that every single one of us had a hand in killing Jesus, since we all have sinned and he is paying for it.

Everybody hates Jews? Interesting...

Anyway I can't abide the notion that all other hatred is for a relatively defined reason and hatred of Jews is paradoxical.. generally if one is inclined to hate an entire group of people that group of people can not "win" as far as those who harbor that hatred are concerned.
The parodoxes exampled on your linked pages are common to all examples of prejudices.

The original links are great! Thanks to the OP. From the second link: "

"The uniqueness of anti-Semitism lies in the fact that no other people in the world have ever been charged simultaneously with alienation from society and with cosmopolitanism, with being capitalistic exploiters and also revolutionary communist advocators. The Jews were accused of having an imperious mentality, at the same time they're a people of the book. They're accused of being militant aggressors, at the same time as being cowardly pacifists. With being a Chosen people, and also having an inferior human nature. With both arrogance and timidity. With both extreme individualism and community adherence. With being guilty of the crucifixion of Jesus and at the same time held to account for the invention of christianity."
A speech about the irrationality of anti-Semitism
by professor Michael Curtis, of Rutgers University, 1987]

I highly recommend a documentary called "The Longest Hatred", which details a timeline on anti-Semitism, and explains why it persists to this very day. The answer why it does is so complex and varied, that it pretty much defies description - only that human beings are highly capable of being irrational, and like to blame others for their problems, if that can sum it up.

It's like the tragic-comic quintessential Jewish joke: a mother gives her son two ties for his birthday, a red one and a green one. He wears the red one out to dinner with her; she says, "What's the matter, you don't like the green one?"

I myself am a big supporter of the Jews and believe the Scripture that says to "Pray for the peace
of Jerusalem". From the beginning, God singled them out as his chosen people and from the
beginning, Israel had enemies (i.e. all the "ites" in the Old Testament). Even before it was called
Israel, Isaac (a ancestor) had a childhood enemy - Hagar's son Ishmael, which today the Muslim
people descended from. In the New Testament and early AD years, the jews were despised and
kept under control by Rome. In today's society, there was the relatively recent Holocaust, which
was an attempt to estinguish the Jewish race. Although 6 million Jews died, the Jews are yet a
populous people.

(because Internet Explorer won't let me post a lot at a time, my message will be in segments... you can count it as one post if you like)
Of course, they still have many enemies. America has debated on whether to fully support the Jews concerning the Gaza strip or let their enemies take some of their land. All this concerning the Jews today and also in the future had already been prophesied in the
Bible.

Who is "everyone"? I'm a nontheist, but of all the organized religions I've studied, I have the most respect for Judaism. When I read the Tanakh I'm actually moved to tears quite often (yes, I know how weird that sounds coming from an atheist ;)). Heck, I'm even taking a road trip to check out a Reconstructionist synagogue later this month, and I can't wait to go.

The only reason I can think of why some people would hate Jews is because they are just plain willfully ignorant and/or brainwashed. A lot of the time you'll find that anti-Semites hate most minorities in general, too.

Although I do not understand all of the prophesies concerning Israel and their role now and
in the final days, I do know that God had and still does have a plan for His people. Let us not forget
that Jesus himself is a Jew and that it was through the Jews that we Christians have also become
God's children as Paul so often emphasizes in His letters. Though many have tried to cut off the
Jews forever, it will not happen. We must still pray for the peace of Jerusalem and support them
wholeheartedly because God commanded us to. There is blessing for those who bless Israel and
curse for those who curse Israel.

You scare me.
Your previous post to this makes me doubt you understand the Arab/Israeli conflict at all.
Yet you speak with such certainty.

ps. Try either Firefox or Opera instead of IE.

Seriously. I've never understood how thinking the Israeli government is corrupt can be seen as tantamount to hating Jewish people.

Its analogous to people who think 'my country right or wrong' a sentiment I deplore.
