  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Because it's a spiritual book and most people don't know where to start so it seems overwhelming.

The best thing to do is try Audio Bible first or a summary of The Book to get a basic understanding first.

The Eastern Orthodox icon you use in your signature reflects the ancient tradition in which Scripture was read, indeed, usually sung or chanted, in church, so that even the illiterate, who at the time were a substantial portion of the population, could learn the Scripture, and furthermore, many or the Holy Icons depict portions of scripture in narrative fashion, and this practice originated in Judaism and continued into early Christianity, as we know from the excavated house church and synagogue in Dura Europos in Syria.*

*Sadly these were destroyed by savage terrorists from ISIS in the past decade.

I don't far from it but a lot of people I talk to do, why is this ?
Well, in a sense, it is theologically 'heavy' for most people and it is difficult for them to enjoy spending their leisure reading it.

We must also remember that not everyone is wired the same way, so learning to enjoy reading the Bible is something that a person must condition themselves to develop as a habit.

If it helps, I don't think it's always helpful if people try to read it beginning to end. If asked by someone new to reading it, I always suggest reading the New Testament, first. Actually, I suggest reading the Gospel of John and 1 John, and then work their way around until they have a context for reading the OT. The whole idea of reading scripture is to encounter the living Christ (this idea goes back to Origen, but the writer of John says as much). If you start with the OT, by the time you get to Numbers, you might be ready to claw your eyes out and do something interesting.

I agree, but I might suggest reading all the chapters they have made movies about like Samson & Delilah, Noah, David & Goliath & Jericho which most people have seen, this way they can get a true understanding of the narratives in scripture.

The bible is a big book with all sorts of different and confusing things to say about some of the weirdest subjects. It's hard to understand, and you never know when to take what it says as applicable or not. And it has all sorts of hidden context, culture, language, informal usages that we do not know are informal. All of this can make it seem boring.

I myself have generally always enjoyed reading Scripture - the only time I had trouble and got lost was when attempting to read from beginning to end as a teenager, starting with the Old Testament.

This approach is inadvisable, particularly in light of the fact that in Luke 24:25-27 and Luke 24:44-46 our Lord shows the Disciples how the Old Testament is about Him, thus establishing the hermeneutical principle that the New Testament interprets the Old.

When reading the Old Testament therefore, one should always be looking for the Christological and soteriological meaning. Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy are at least as much about our flight from sin and sojourn in this world as Christians as about the sojourn of the Israelites in the desert of Sinai.
