Good answers everyone - its great to see the variety in them.Oscarr said:I have a more down to earth approach to this. Often people pray in tongues with an intensity that comes from their own strength and consquently they tire themselves out through a long session, losing energy because they are trying to reach up to heaven, in tongues, through their own strength.
I have learned to completely relax and let the language flow, in the same way that I have conversations with my friends.
Maybe you are trying too hard to make God listen, when having a more relaxed attitude when you are praying in tongues will have a more beneficial effect. We can also tire ourselves out by speaking in tongues just from the neck up, instead of allowing the flow of language come from deep inside of our being to the Lord.
I can sit on a bus full of passengers and pray just as effectively in tongues under my breath, when I am in a field by myself speaking out loud to the Lord where there is no one else to hear.
Pentecostals are characteristic for using an intensity of worship that is mainly of their own strength. They are trying too hard to impress the Lord, when He actually knows what they have need of before they even open their mouths in prayer!
Therefore relax, be peaceful when you pray. God will appreciate and answer all the same without you having to exhaust yourself in self effort.
