The fact that child molestation is nearly double that in evangelical denominations than in the RCC is not being shouted from any roof tops. This story was extinguished.

That is the question I am posing, "Why did this not explode in the media the same way it exploded against the RCC ?"

In all honesty, I believe people want a whipping boy, and unfortunately the actions of some priests over the years have created that situation.

However I believe its far easier to put the blame on one denomination, than to take a long hard look in our own back yard and deal with the rot and canker thats set in....... Coming from an abusive pentecostal church, which leaves most denominations in the dust, The scripture about taking the log out of our own eye before we attempt to take the splinter out of others......

Its not fair, and I absolutely hate the fact that people insist on dragging up the ghosts of the past instead of addressing their own rubbish,

I do recall in my state (and across Australia) that there have been many accusations (and some prosecutions) of Anglican priests for child sexual offences, indeed, the former Governor-General was involved in a scandal over the alleged cover-up of child sexual abuse by Australian Anglican priests. The Anglican Church in Australia has recently set up a fund to help pay for compensation for those abused by its priests, teachers, and others in the church. There was also a story in my state not long ago about a Baptist youth pastor who was convicted for child sexual offences. But there do seem to be a lot more stories in the media about the Catholic priests and school-teachers who are accused of child sexual abuse.

First, we should not wish this on anyone. As Catholics, we will bear the cross of those that hate us. Second, much of the media (those that have an ounce of faith) are usually protestent and of the liberal based churches out there, so they are not going to go after their own. Just like many protestents that have an ax to grind with the Catholic Church, they attack what they perceive to be the enemy.

YEah I think this is part of it.

But even more so, the RCC is the most recognizable organization in the world. The RCC "sets" the standard for moral truths and the bar is set high(in most peoples minds). This makes the RCC the target more than anything - IMO. Whenevr someone within the RCC commits a sin such as this - the media is going to pounce because it's always been the RCC preaching the moral truths that offend many.

hola,

perhaps there is a media bias against Catholics but i think it is depraved if we read about sexual abuse against children only as ammunition against another group. it is akin to the people that reveled in the moral destruction of dr. haggard, caring little if he has a chance for redemption.

anyway i think as time goes on we will learn that it's not a phenomenon about priests or ministers... there are doctors, lawyers, parents, politicians and garbagemen who abuse children in shocking numbers. child abuse has always been a frightening taboo and so we do not look for it as diligently as we should... if we did it would be frightening.

it is so sad what is happening... people we are supposed to trust are mixed in with predators.

It's not being extinguished.

The first thing you have to remember is that, in this day and age we live in, there are creeps and predators everywhere. Roman Catholicism, "non-Roman Catholicism", Judaism, Islam, everywhere.

While it's outrageous and diabolical, regardless of who does it or what religion they're representing, what makes the Roman Catholic abuses stand out so in the minds of the public is that they're the ones who have an institutional conspiracy to cover it up.

Victims are routinely paid off, told that they're going to go to Hell if they go against the Roman Catholic church, etc. And then, to make matters worse, the predator is sent to another church without telling the congregation what is being sent their way.

So the net result is that the wolf has just been taken out of one sheep pen and put into another with fresh meat.

We "non-Roman Catholics" don't have that. Because out churches are so much more decentralized and, in the case of Baptists and some non-denoms, autonomous, the problem is brought directly before the congrgation and dealt with.

The person is removed immediately from a leadership position and the church does everything they can to cooperate with the police.

So what it really boils down to is that the abuse is the same, but the reaction is different and that's why the two are perceived so differently.

Which further illustrates my point that bringing these things to light is a social taboo. We seem to instinctually prefer to not face even the possibility since the idea is so horrible and disgusting. Whether it is in schools, churches or the dormitories of congressional pages abuse is too horrible to become frozen by inaction.

Also, to the OP, I'm not certain whether your point was that it is ignored by the media for Protestants... but if you did not notice this is an article from ABC news.

I have to agree with W.E. to some extent, sounds kind of odd saying that, but yea people understand no matter how sick and messed up it is abuse happens, it was the cover up that got people mad at the Church, and the fact that we would rather be in charge of our own house cleaning then hand it all over to the Government, this also brings back old fears of the Church being agianst the US Government.
W.E. I think your view of how small denominations handel such a crises sounds a little nieve, I would hope they handel it like you mentioned but in small communities people can get very clanish and not want to "go agianst there own"

Another reason is that the Catholic Church is one big organization with one hierarchy. With most of the protestant groups, if they find their minister molesting kids they allow him to resign and move on in order to avoid the publicity. If the case comes up years later then that particular church can say that the minister left and they have no system in place to track them. So the minister just goes to another church or starts up his own.

The key word here being "I would think". You may think so, but they are not.

We have to go through examination and accountability that is would be unheard of for a Roman Catholic priest.

There are so many checks and balances, that concealing such a thing would be nearly impossible.

WarEagle, I don't accept "our child molestors are not as bad as your child molestors" as a legitimate argument. The point here is that this is a broader situation than just priests or ministers and that as we become more open to investigating this, we will uncover more and more child abuse. I think it's healthy that we are confronting, instead of retreating.
