I came because someone died, and I felt that the things I needed to work through (mostly questions about the afterlife, from various Christian points of view,at the time) were not really on topic at the parenting board I typically posted on. I googled for Christian forums and voila! this one popped up.

I found CF while I was "googling" different websites. I haven't gotten over my intimidation but I'm working on it. I have grown because of the variety of faiths posting. I was so surprised to discover that (based on the discussions and debates I have read at CF) my lifelong vision that "God = Love" is considered a liberal christian (oftimes considered "unchristian" at CF) point of view.

OK...I'll also admit. Right now, I think I have a CF addiction. Help!!!

Love to all,

AO

I've been active on an interfaith spiritual support forum for a while now. A good friend on that forum recommended CF to me as a good place for discussion. I came, I saw, I joined. I'm still here, but the reasons why I participate have changed over time. I'm less interested in explaining, comparing, and contrasting my own faith. But I'm more interested in learning why other people believe what believe and behave as they behave. I didn't think I could be more interested than I already was. But I am.

Well, at the time, I had no social life and mostly just wanted someone to talk to. At the same time, I was curious about what other Christians believed. Particularly orthodox christians, who I had never come into contact with before but who seemed abundant on CF. Since entering college, CF has begun to perform another function for me, as a bastion of Christianity in an increasingly atheistic environment. It's one of the only places in my life where holding a spiritual belief is actually encouraged.

1) Wanted to learn about other ideas and wanted to understand better why I think the way I do.
2) Felt lonely and wanted to talk and jabber
3) Wanted to talk on an intellectual level that can be quite exasperating when you do it with your personnal friends, face to face.
4) Forums are great: You read an oppinion, go away and think about it, and then you realize and suddenly understand what that other person was trying to say. In real life, you get into this psychological state where you have to justify yourself, and so the conversation doesn't get very far. It's too bad, because some ideas take 2 weeks to digest.
5)I used to be on another forum, but the average age there was 15, and getting younger with time... so I had to come here for more variaty.

I stumbled across this place while googling for something else (I can't remember what now) and I couldn't believe that a message board could be so big, have so many facets and still be well managed. I've been on a lot of different message boards, but this one is far livelier and still friendly.

On the down side, I think it will be a little bit harder to make friends because it's easy to spread yourself too thin. ... but then I always wanted to be thin ;)

I started posting here because I had a very negative experience with a Christian individual. I had a deeply emotional reaction and realized that, while my reaction to him was normal and understandable, I was starting to vilify an entire religion based on the actions of one individual. I suppose I realized that I needed a reality check.

So I basically wandered onto the forum to find out more about what Christians are like as people.

I haven't seen anything that would cause me to reconvert. Yet I've also learned that Christians aren't the judgmental, cruel monsters that the aforementioned individual was/is. Some are, some aren't.

I stick around for the lively conversations and debates.

ottaia:

I started because I wanted to share ideas with others and I wanted to discuss topics I couldn't necessarily discuss with my congregation.

Something like that, and to stir some people's pond, so to speak. ;) Oops, I shouldn't have said that last part. :holy:
