I’ve don’t like political parties. They promote tribalism. The major parties, (and their evil spawn, political “bases”) have become as factious and divisive as religion, race, ethnicity, and nationality ever were. And maybe more so. Democrats and Republicans both thrive on creating conflict and demonizing each other. Their only interest is power and control. It’s a disgrace. But it’s today’s political reality, and it’s not gonna change anytime soon.
If anything, I’m closest to an old-fashioned northeastern Republican. Socially liberal and fiscally moderate/conservative. When people like Nelson Rockefeller, Jacob Javitz, Olympia Snowe, Bill Weld, and Jim Jeffords were still around. They’re almost an extinct species now. But they’re the folks who really made it the Grand Old Party.
When politics works as it should it is when the ancient fine art of compromise is employed. Canada is governed under a British parliamentary system. We have two major parties and a third that could become major. Over the past 50 years we have had several minority governments. In my opinion they worked well because the governing party was forced to negotiate with the other parties in order to remain in power. Compromise made it all work and it worked rather well.
