The "Snake" more than likely would have ,in appearance, been Beautiful to behold and so ,that snake was not an actual snake.Whether it could appear Reptilian-Like at other times is another matter..This "Snake",probably appeared to be Angelic. Why did the snake (Satan?) persuade Eve to eat the forbidden fruit, but not to talk to Adam first?
Could he talk to Adam first but Adam had rejected him, and so he came to entice Eve?
Actually, it's the traditional Christian interpretation for many centuries, and it probably started with extracanonical Jewish literature. Though often in Church history the serpent was called just "the serpent", the connection to Satan was understood.
Milton borrowed a lot from Christian tradition to write his poem. His themes were well understood by his readers at the time, he didn't have to invent the notion.
Perhaps he tried Adam first but found Eve willing to agree to his seductive plan? Why did the snake (Satan?) persuade Eve to eat the forbidden fruit, but not to talk to Adam first?
Could he talk to Adam first but Adam had rejected him, and so he came to entice Eve?
But was Adam held accountable for her actions? Since he was to rule over her. She didn't even know she was naked til Adam took his first bite, yes or no? So does that show us the accountability held for the husband over his wife and family? And the 2 shall become one body.
I don't know. It is entirely possible that they were naked all along, and they just didn't know what naked means...
After Eve fell Adam deliberately sinned also in order to share her fate, he couldn't face the prospect of being without Eve. Its a Love story.
I don't think he would have been held accountable over her actions to that degree - she wasn't a puppet with strings and had her own choices at the time. Plus as many have said, Adam may have been hovering about but not hearing the full conversation. I always pictured him away from her too when the serpent took his chance to approach.
I always found this part interesting. Being naked is not sinful in itself. We know children don't feel awkward nude and running around, and other cultures have no problems with nudity tempting them, feeling more natural than clothes. I'm wondering about this verse. They saw they were nude and then felt shame. Shame of what? They didn't cover up because they were tempted by each others bodies? Did they suddenly feel shy? Vulnerable?
They became aware of their nakednessThere are places in the scripture that seem to imply they had bodies that emitted light. They then became "naked" when their bodies went from unfallen to fallen and the light went out, so to speak. It's not that hard to believe as our bodies still emit light to some very small degree through biophotons.
6And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. 7And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves apronsI believed when the snake spoke to Eve, Adam was not there.
They became aware of their nakedness
Before they sinned they were innocent and had no understanding of anything but good
They were innocent and without any guilt
It was after they ate that their eyes were opened and they saw their nakedness and looked to cover themselves
Not before
Which post are you referring to?That doesn't actually negate what I said. You are speaking of consequences, both emotional and intellectual, while I was speaking of the physical.
I'm not saying they were or they weren't. Rather, I'm putting it out there as a possibility. It's all academic anyway as it makes no difference one way or the other at this point.
This is not correctThere are places in the scripture that seem to imply they had bodies that emitted light. They then became "naked" when their bodies went from unfallen to fallen and the light went out, so to speak. It's not that hard to believe as our bodies still emit light to some very small degree through biophotons.
