I just read a book on this. The parables marked a distinct diparture in christs teaching, as it was the first time he used parables. It follows the rejection of christ by the jews in matthew 12... i think. Notice the jews rejected him the same day. The parables are dircted at the jews, at least the first four, the last three are told in private. He spoke in parables so that they would have eyes but dont see...etc.
