Why did Jesus have to die? This is the question posed. Most of us will come back with a programmed response, but who among us have deeply studied this question? I think this question deserves a measured and studied response. If your response is "to save us", please feel free to elaborate specifically what His death is saving us from and how it accomplished that purpose.

Why Jesus had to die:

1) To accomplish the actual blood sacrifice needed to be a propitiation for the Father.
Rom 3
25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

2) The testament is not in effect until the death of the testator.
Hen 9
16 For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator.
17 For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth.

because he loves us and sometimes love has to suffer to wake others out of their insanity. love suffers because he sees what terrible state those are in who do not have love and so we who love pine away until the day they may freely choose God instead of self. then we will be complete, when all have stopped being blinded to the reality that God loves us. self is only complete in God. Father saw that it would be good for so many if Jesus died on the cross and so Jesus accepted because he always does the will of His Father.

Our old fleshly nature had to die, otherwise we couldn't become like Him and have the relationship restored. God is holy, with a sinful nature we die if we see Him and can't approach Him.

I would say for the first response, is that they had to see it, to believe it.

I believe you could look at this in many ways, many of which have already been mentioned but I believe one thing that ties all this together is that God is love(1jn 4:8, 1jn 4:16) and the greatest love man can have is to lay down his life for his friend(Jn 15:13) If the fulfillment of the law is love(Rom 13:10) than Jesus Christ had to Die for us to be our savior. Because he died for us he is our savior because he was willing to die for us. He died for us to show us what love is. He is our example. It is not just an example that deals with our physical death but also is an example on how we become a Christian. We must spiritually die and be born again in Christ. Its a transformation from living for yourself to living for Christ. If Christ was not willing to die for us how could we know what love is and believe it if God is love and wasn't willing to show the greatest of loves.

Why did Jesus have to die? ...

Because of what God's nature is for the satisfaction of justice. By American law, a person is punished for their own crimes, and God is mostly like that, but there is an exception. Someone else can pay for a person's sins if they meet certain qualifications. If they do, they are called a kinsman-redeemer. The Law given to Moses (a reflection of God's nature) about this is in Leviticus 25 (and snippets in other places). The book of Ruth gives us an illustration of what a kinsman-redeemer is. (Ruth 4)

To qualify as a kinsman-redeemer a person must:
1. be a blood relative. (Lev. 25:25, 49; Jer. 32:7-8; Heb. 2:11-14,17) [which is why God had to became fully man]
2. be willing to pay (Ruth 4:6, John 3:16, et. al.)
3. be able to pay (a slave doesn't have the authority to redeem another slave) [Jesus was qualified because he was without sin, Heb 4:15, Rom. 3:23; specifically, he was not a son of Adam, See Rom. 5]

Since the earned consequences of sin is death (Rom. 6:23), Jesus chose to pay the penalty for us—which made it possible to get right with God, but didn't cleanse us from sin (which comes from God granting a rebirth when we choose to wholly yield to the Lord's authority).

Note that the above verses also reveal that Jesus redeemed mankind’s “land” (the Earth that God gave them but they lost when they became slaves to sin).

Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. (Mat. 5:17, 1984 NIV)

(Edited to add a verse reference [Heb. 2:17] and to correct a sentence as ewq1938 mentioned below.)

Since the punishment for sin is death (Rom. 6:23), Jesus chose to die in our place.

He didn't take our place. He died for us which is different. We still die so Christ didn't save us from that death. The punishment for sin is the second death not the first death and that's what he died to prevent. When we repent, our sin is removed and thus the second death is not a danger for us.

One thing that comes to mind is that Satan would only engage his power of death focused on humanity if he could mistakenly think he was going to over power the Holy One of God, and take His power for Himself as he had desired from the first rebellion, where he aimed to lift himself above God. So Satan's power over men and women in death, and death itself could be a broken power, if Jesus like a Trojan horse seemed to fall into their complete force of power, in their gates all of death upon Him was overpowered, so Jesus got the keys to death and Hell.

Paul asks "death where is your sting." Now Jesus as a man has for us resurrection and life, and it's what he is. Death upon Humans is passing away. The curse on Adam is broken. Satan who wanted to lift himself is a defeated enemy. Holy angels are even stronger now.

The attraction to take out the vineyard owner's son was the goal of taking the whole inheritance. St Michael did not have this attraction, nor could he withstand the power of all of the fallen angels and demons. But Jesus overcame.

Because the wages of sin is death. The taking upon Himself of all of the death consequences of our sins was the wage that needed to be paid in order to redeem us.

Why do we continue to die then?

Looks like an ancient thread has been *resurrected*. The answer is found throughout the Bible. In a nutshell sin separates the human race from God, and all humanity is dead in their trespasses and sins. So the sin debt had to be paid, and a way made for sinners to have eternal life and be reconciled to God. That is about as briefly as this question can be answered.

Jesus was intent on the reformation of second temple Judaism and was considered a threat by the High Priesthood. However he had not committed any blasphemy they could charge him with. On the other hand the Romans regarded him as a dangerous political activist. His death was the perfect solution for both parties. His followers developed a "higher meaning" for his death.
