It wasn't. You still had segregation, women were openly discriminated against in the workplace, couples of mixed race were openly attacked, etc. You are absolutely wrong. It was much worse when you were a kid.
Everytime someone I know starts talking of the 'good ol' days', I'm reminded of this guy - cant' remember his name off the top of my head - who was lynched in front of a mob for looking at a white girl the wrong way. I think it's quite telling that, more often than not, the people I see moaning about how better things used to be are white.
I am very glad to be living in this time. Just sixty years ago, my life as a black man would be much less pleasant. The current time isn't perfect, but quality of life is much improved. You can go back to the days when we used to die of polio if you want, I'm fine right here.
