How does one become a Christian?
Here's what the Bible has to say:
1. Salvation is God's gift to us, undeserved and unearned, received by faith alone in Christ alone. It begins with a confession of the truth that Jesus Christ is Lord and Saviour of one's life.
Ephesians 2:8-9 (KJV)
8 For
by grace are you saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
Romans 10:9-11
9 That if you shall
confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and shall
believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, you shall be saved.
10 For with the heart man believes unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
11 For the scripture says, Whosoever believes on him shall not be ashamed.
Acts 4:12
12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name (Christ's) under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
2. Genuine salvation always necessarily involves a turning away from one's former godless lifestyle to a new, holy manner of living. This requires a humble admission of one's sinfulness to God and one's desperate need of His grace and mercy.
Matthew 4:17
17 From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say,
Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
Acts 3:19
19
Repent you therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out...
Ephesians 1:7
7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the
forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;
1 John 1:9
9 If we
confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Acts 17:29-31
29 Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device.
30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commands all men every where to
repent:
31 Because he has appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he has ordained; whereof he has given assurance unto all men, in that he has raised him from the dead.
James 4:6-10
6 But he gives more grace. Wherefore he says, God resists the proud, but gives grace unto the humble.
7
Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.
Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and
purify your hearts, you double minded.
9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.
10
Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.
1 John 1:5-7
5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
7 But if we
walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanses us from all sin.
3. Genuine salvation always entails submission of one's entire life and being to God. God does not take a back seat to anything. When He enters one's life it as He is: the Ruler of All.
1 Peter 5:6
6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:
John 15:4-5
4
Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can you, except you abide in me.
5 I am the vine, you are the branches: He that abides in me, and I in him, the same brings forth much fruit: for without me you can do nothing.
4. While salvation requires a laying aside of one's old values and morals and an embracing of a new Christ-centered existence, the new believer gains far more than he/she may lose.
Ephesians 3:17-19
17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love,
18 May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height;
19 And to know the love of Christ, which passes knowledge, that you might be filled with all the fulness of God.
John 10:9-11
9 I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.
10 The thief comes not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
11 I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.
Psalms 37:3-5
3 Trust in the LORD, and do good; so shall you dwell in the land, and truly you shall be fed.
4 Delight yourself also in the LORD; and he shall give you the desires of your heart.
5 Commit your way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.
Psalms 16:11
11 You will show me the path of life: in your presence is fulness of joy; at your right hand there are pleasures for evermore.
Peace to you.
