Ya know I'm hyper critical of many theologies and am always willing to point out heterodox in other denoms but I have never had any problems with fellow Christians in WELS, ELS or AALC among others. The ones that really need the criticism are the ones that we shy away from because of "rules" and we're afraid of getting in trouble.

Not with a Mac

Ba da dum... (back at ya’!) :D

You Mac enthusiasts just wait until someone writes a virus for a Mac. Then you'll find out what a pleasure dealing with a virus or a worm actually is. ^_^

I imagine we'll be waiting a long time. It's not for lack of trying. I have a friend who writes test bugs for the PCs at his company whose been trying for five years now to write a bug that gets the mac. He hasn't come up with one yet.

The problem with macs is that they're exclusive and expensive. When my last mac's graphics went on the fritz, the repair cost would've been $300 less than a NEW mac. So I got a new mac.

Yeah, you will. Macinstosh doesn't have the large following that the PC does. So writing a virus or worm or anything else for a Mac is kinda pointless if your desire is to infect a whole bunch of computers. I'd love to get a Mac, I really would, but a lot of peripherals don't work with Macs and I love to play PC games and a lot of games just aren't compatible with Macs, but Macs have the better hardware for games I was told about 10 years ago as compared to the PC. So I just said, "i'll buy an XBox 360 and be done with it." LOL

My 13 year old loves the graphics on my computer, but hates the fact that the games for it are about two versions behind the PS and Xbox ones.

When you say 13 year old, don't you really mean you? LOL That stinks btw, because the driving force behind console games and consoles themselves was to bring the PC gaming experience to the consumer in s a smaller package at a lesser price. But now with systems like the PS3 costing $500, that line has been kinda blurred. Nintendo is keeping that line more clear by selling a wWii for I think it's 199 or 149 now.

I have a friend who works on computers for a living and he says it's completely a myth that there are no Mac viruses. There are certainly fewer but that's because there are fewer Macs to infect and so fewer codes written to infect them.

I bought my Windows Vista PC not too long after Vista came out and I really haven't had any problems with it (I had finally decided it was time to upgrade from Windows 98 when AT&T was offering DSL in my area but wouldn't support anything less than Windows XP). I paid $250 for my PC with the operating system already installed (after mailing in the rebates from e-machines) and it does everything I want it to do. Bibleworks runs great on it (I've heard some Mac users have had problems using this wonderful program).

I would probably take a Mac if someone gave it to me for free or would consider purchasing one if they were the same price as PCs but I can't afford to be part of the cultish Mac crowd--plus I'm afraid they might try to brain-wash me into thinking that Vista doesn't work and my computer will be full of viruses and all the other propaganda :p

Nah, I won't brain wash you.

I have been using Macs since 1990. I also worked in a Fortune 50 company for 8 years as an analyst using Windows XP with Office 2000/2003. So I have a little experience on both sides of the road. The only thing better on the Windows side was Excel, which is ironic since Excel was originally on the Mac. Otherwise, it was always a pleasure to come home to a Mac. Interestingly when I was hired I had never used Excel, but was hired because of my math major in college 40+ years ago. Shortly after I began learning it, I had to teach Windows users how to use Excel and Word and Powerpoint; most people don't have a clue how to do so efficiently and effectively. The last two years I was teaching other analysts how to use Excel for complex, large projects, and integration with Access and the mainframe.

My current computer is MacBook Pro 2.4 Ghz, 4 GB RAM. I travel a lot, and this is my desk, library, everything. I don't have any MS products on my Mac, but when I exchange files with Windows users, I use NeoOffice/OpenOffice. Otherwise I use:

  • Mellel (an Israeli word processor that handles Hebrew exceptionally well, has multiple, independent note streams, multiple auto-titling features, and a superb approach to styles.)
  • Nisus Writer Pro (everyday word processor)
  • Papyrus ($99, cross-platform cross between word processor, page layout, and mini database. Used this to produce a 235 page book, all the way to providing the Printer with camera-ready PDFs)
  • Adobe CS4 Master Collection (Acrobat Pro, Dreamweaver, Flash, Fireworks, Illustrator, InDesign, PhotoShop; just learning these for some projects we are working on -- also cross-platform)
  • Reunion
  • And a few others ;)

Of course, I have Bootcamp and can run Windows natively. But why? ;)

-------------

Not trying to push Macs, just a very satisfied customer. Oh, and in 19 years of use, I have never had a virus, trojan horse, etc. Actually the vulnerabilities of the Mac operating system lend itself more to trojan horses (still very minute) rather than virus attacks. And it really does not have much to do with the size of the community.

Just some ramblings of an old (Mac) codger...

Or even worse, they'll try to get you to drive that Scion that looks like a cube or a Smart Car that looks like what Steve Urkel drove in Family Matters! ^_^

The easiest thing to do is keep the cheep PC. You really can't beat the price. THen put in a different operating system like a Linux derivative. There are hundreds of them out there and many can be downloaded free. They are a lot more user friendly than they were years ago and can be bullet proof if you don't start experimenting with them plus....... they are more powerfull than either WIndow or MacOS and........... NO VIRUSES!!

THey can also be run on older machines all the way back to 8088s and take up considerable less room than WIndos or MacOS. GIgabites less. If you want to be able to run your windows programs and don't want to spent more money for Linux applications just use an emulator built into Linux.

Well, technically Linux and Mac OS are based on the Unix framework, so they are the same in that regard in terms of power and virii. If necessary, you can run Unix (BSD) from the terminal for all the power you want/need.

Like Bootcamp for the Mac.

Realistically, I have too much to do, little time to do it, and I travel a lot. The MacBook Pro works; when I bought this in Feb 08, I needed the most trouble-free computer and the Mac is it. Even when the fan went out this past week, Apple Store ordered it, it came in the next day, and was installed in less than an hour - no charge, no questions. That is only the second time in 19 years I have had to repair any Mac.

Linux is not something I need to add to my arsenal.

See, we CAN get along...provided we all speak geek-speak!! :p
What's really wonderful is that we aren't hearing "oh PC is WAY better than Mac, how can you be Lutheran if you use Mac... etc, or vice versa" :D:D:D:D
