I've heard a few times it been said that once upon a time, Christians were at the forefront of the arts.
Many of the great painters, composers, writers and philosophers were Christians.

Now, we are often seen as late followers and cloners.

*Sorry for triple post! Oh boy...

Some genres have set chord patterns and rhythms; there's just no avoiding that, e.g., blues, country, classic rock n roll. Often, they are variations of the 1, 4, and 5 chords of a given key.

Also it depends what frequency the music is played in.

Today most music is played in 440Hz when it should be played in 432Hz for a better listening experience.

That's what I hear. ;) I'm content if it's an A. As much as I love music, I don't have a great ear. I took a class: Sight Singing and Ear Training, and it was was brutal for me. Some folks, though, have a naturally discerning ear.

Aren't CCM and contemporary worship music basically the same thing? I'm not a fan of it but maybe that is the attraction to CCM for some folks. Casual music listening also becomes an act worship. I don't know. When radios had a dial, I would always roll right past that station. lol

Sorry to hear this. (no pun intended) :)

I'm not sure if I have a naturally discerning ear or not. all's I know is I hate listening to stuff they play on the radio, I'm OK with certain songs/music on YouTube though.

I don't like it in churches, I think it can lead to problems when churches add it. Do you play that kind of music at a wedding or funeral? Music isn't just a whim. It can quickly become like a stageshow or entertainment, & that's not what church is. Church is the body worshipping God & watching a drummer drum like someone who didn't make it in a secular band isn't right. & when the wrong kind of music happens, theology starts to change & the church loses its mission of preserving God's truths. Churches that want to remain in the truth must stick to hymns in service where the congregation sings. As the music goes, so does the church.

But I think it's fine enough to listen to on your own. There is A LOT of good CCM out there.

I agree. Lex orandi, lex credendi.

I haven’t heard any. The closest thing to CCM / Praise and worship that I could accept would be African American Gospel music, but they use it liturgically, which I am fine with as it reflects their experience and contains theological content relevant to various occasions in the church year, for example, the Episcopal church I attended for a year, and a nearby Methodist church, both used a Gospel song on Epiphany with a title like “Wade in the river” or something of that sort which was appropriate for the feast of the baptism of our Lord.

The music of Bach and certain other classical composers tended to be theological even when not intended for use in church, for example, his harpsichord concertos (but anything he composed for the organ has ecclesiastical applications).

I myself would rather listen to secular classical or jazz music than to CCM, because I can’t listen to rock music in general, and the lyrics of CCM I find to be objectionably vague. But I mostly listen to ecclesiastical music.

Yes. I suspect aversion to it and its ubiquity is one of the contributing factors to the recent explosive growth in membership of the Orthodox church.

I haven't bought a lot of CCM in recent years, so I don't know what is out there currently. The last CCM I bought was MWS - a Million Lights. There was a lot of high quality CCM in the 1980s and 1990s as I recall.

The Youtube channel Real 80s CCM has a lot of it.
