  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Why are there religions?

Religions are there for people who can not accept that life ends with death, they think they are far too important for it to be like that for them so they scratch around for an answer, any answer, (a religion) then fool themselves into believing the answer they found is in fact the real meaning behind their life, religions teach people how to fool themselves and be happy while they're doing it.

I don't think there is any one reason. Religions popped up in virtually all cultures and come in a variety of forms.

One of the earliest reasons was probably just to attempt to describe what was going on in the world. It's hard to imagine how one would view the world in an era that does not include all the scientific knowledge we have now. And even now with all that we know, we still don't know everything.

I suppose also that it may be an evolutionary tool to cope with the realization of mortality. It can be a big show-stopper for an organism to realize that it will one day die, and that on a long enough timescale, everything that it ever does will eventually cease to matter. To promote survival and reproduction, on a large scale, it might be useful- especially then and maybe still now.

Religions give some people a sense of purpose or a sense of importance. They can provide community, inspiration, and extra ways to deal with distress and despair.

This^

I apply a kind of reverse Occam's Razor to this kind of question. Human life is just too complex to say that something like religion has one, and only one, cause.

Have you ever actually talked to a religious person objectively instead of just assuming you know their motivations and everything from the start?

I don't think about where I'm going when I die ever, and in fact I have no problem if in fact, when I die, I cease to exist. If that is how it is fine, I am not worried or bothered in the least about it. So, I believe because I can't accept death? No, you're completely wrong. Not kinda wrong, not a little, absolutely wrong.

Considering your admissions so far on this board that you've never researched any religion, and you haven't even read the bible, I don't think you know or actually care to know the truth about why anyone believes anything. You've already decided. The only way you can prove otherwise is to read, research, spend some time asking questions instead of telling people how things are when there are children that have done more actual fact finding than you have, based on your admissions. Otherwise like I said several months ago your words are worthless.

You're completly wrong. Religion often doesn't make people "happy". Religion adds burdens to peoples lives, restrictions responsibility that otherwise wouldn't have. Religion also adds fear. Consider muslim women: do they follow their religion because it makes them "happy"?

And this is your religion.

If you don't expect some kind of reward why are you religious? and please don't say, 'because it makes sense' because it doesn't, since when has believing in something you don't even know exists make sense?

Most (I remembered) religions are based on fear, without the fear they could be picked up or dropped at will,
fear of reprisal keep people in line, the old 'What if' question has worked for many centuries and it works just as well today.

I think all religions have one thing in common, they cause the believer to become delusional.

I think the one thing in common in all religions is to exploit the naives and superstitious of this world into providing a good way for crooks to make a living.

Atheism is a religion.
Athiesm is a position on one single binary belief point. Thats hardly enough to qualify as "religion".
.
Nor does vehemence turn that position into religion. Force of opinion is just a matter of style or personality.
