And is it possible to reach these people because I keep seeing them and all the time they are incredibly angry and hateful on the internet and it hurts.
Because sinners are enslaved by sin, and they can do nothing about it. Take pity on them, like the Lord took pity on us, when we were the same.

Remember when the Lord on the cross said to the Father 'forgive them, for they do not know what they doing'. We are also taught to be like that. Be merciful.

If you are like the Lord, you resemble Him, people will persecute you for that. Still, be merciful, like the Lord was merciful to you when you were like that.

Internet atheists are typically political leftists. They are angry all the time about everything. Now, being angry about things is often helpful. It points out problems. But to be intolerant to the point of being intolerable isn't helping anything.

Interesting question!

My question is why is it that Christians seem to enjoy arguing with them in an equally hostile manner? (Or any manner at all?)

I just don't think that arguing with an atheist about politics or non-essential/Gospel issues is doing anything to convince of them of anything except that Christians can be very contentious people.

The mention of God, or quoting from the Bible, has that effect.
So, that means we must always expect this hostility. Matthew 10:22; Matthew 24:9; Luke 6:22; John 15:17-19
At least be thankful you did not have to face the Jews.
Acts 7:54-60 - Stoning of Stephen. Acts 14:19 - Stoning of Paul

Remember too, that they wanted to throw Jesus off a cliff.
So, if religious people hated Jesus and his followers, imagine how non believers will feel.

Many atheists are hostile because they're angry with God. They stay angry and take it out on God and Christians.

It's hard to say if they can be reached. But certainly pray for them and you can ask God if He wants you to do anything about it. People can be transformed by Christ.

Usually, those folks are angry because more often than not have come out of fundamentalistic and charismatic type churches that sold them a certain interpretative position on the Bible that expects too much in this life. They have then "deconstructed" their views of the Bible and of the Christian faith came with those views, becoming 'Ex-Christians' and now turn their former feelings of belief against Christians.

Of course they're angry about that. I'm usually angry when someone cheats me my telling me that their service or product is "awesome" but then it egregiously fails in some way from what was promised.

This is true. Religion has created some angry atheists.

Also, the world filled with Satan's spirit, have contributed to their anger, because when they do not understand why bad things happen to good people, and they are told that there is a good God, that requires they live their life a certain way, their anger flares up, since they don't want to hear that their life course is not approved by one who let their child get hit by a bus, and did nothing about it.

In other words, "I am more morally upright than God, so don't tell me about this God, that wants to tell me about morals. I am my own God."
Some of these never were religious, however.

I think some of them were, and only God knows the difference. Not that it matters that much in the end, though.

Some people know too, because they tell us. Either while in that state, or after becoming a Christian.

Sure. But those who are still alive haven't finished out their full lifetimes yet. Some of them may yet return through the confusion.

Not that that matters.
The question is why are they hostile and mean toward Christians.
We just want the answer to that question.

If some return, the answer would not change.

That’s a big blanket statement. I could ask “Why are internet Christians so hostile and mean to atheists?” Because I see that a few times on this forum.

There are some hostile atheists…..and there are some hostile Christians.

I just answered the question about "why" they are hostile. However, this isn't to say that I agree with them in their newly claimed identity.

Atheists are angry at Christians because they see no proof of God in them, thus they are convinced Christians are spreading nothing but lies.
That's interesting.
Why do you suppose atheists don't complain about Christmas?

They probably knew there's nothing Christian about Christmas or "Xmas"
I'm glad you used the word "probably", because otherwise, would be to conclude that all atheist have the same understanding and view. Which isn't the case.
What about Easter... Valentine's Day... Thanksgiving... Halloween...?

Is it possible to reach these people?
Anything is possible for someone who has faith! Mark 9:23 ;)
