  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

About a lot of things. Like D&D, Harry Potter, Pokemon, etc.

I read this story about how a mother smashed their child's gameboy because he was playing pokemon. I mean pokemon? I've been a fan and don't see how some people think its the work of the devil. Its just little cute monsters fighting each other. I read a review of the first movie on Christian Spotlight, and most of them said how it was introducing child into occult practices.
O.K., I would be freaked out if I came home and my cat was shooting fireballs out of its mouth or if my parrot could fly me to Paris.
I admit, I have put hundreds of hours into my game, but its all in good fun.

Has anyone heard of Digimon? Its like pokemon, but with a technological twist. I'm even a bigger fan of Digimon than Pokemon. My favorite is Patamon, he digivolves (think Caterpillar to butterfly), to a very angel like appearance.

About Harry Potter, it has many Christian influences if you take the time to actually read the book. HP witchcraft and wicca is like comparing apples and bricks. The books have no mention of a Horned God/Mother/etc. Plus, the "wizards" celebrate Christmas and Easter! In the last book, when Mad Eye Moody died, harry put a cross on his grave, if it is occult shouldn't it be a pentagram? JK Rowling also said that Hogwarts is a multi-faith school.

Many people seem to be crazy about the harry potter thing. It was fun to play at the playground, and I never was able to lift things with my stick.

Why are so many Christian people crazy? They think that any little thing that isn't in our realm of possibility is automatically the work of Satan.

Some Christians have a very tiny frame of reference. They can somewhat simplistically make black and white divisions and thereby isolate themselves from the complexities and many of the realities of life, becomming somewhat 'monastic' in their separation from what they see as 'the world'.

But there are many well balanced, dedicated Christians who ahve a much more integrated set of beliefs and interact with society broadly and confidently, and thereby gain an audience that the more isolated miss out on.

Some Christians tend to worry that anything earthly-- such as a game like Pokemon--- has evil tendencies. Perhaps it has an angelic character (I remember watching the cartoon as a kid and I enjoyed it), but anything earthly takes away our time, attention, and talents from giving glory to God. Some Christians are VERY focused on God and doing His work and living His ways only. A parent can be fanatical as is-- because in their eyes they are responsible for raising their child-- and when a parent is worried about their child's salvation they may act out in irrational ways.

A child should respect the parents' decision, but if they are unsure of WHY their parent(s) are doing this, they should sit down and discuss it respectfully.

Yes, I know, be on the earth, not of it. But I'm talking about some that think that these things are of Satan and that they are dangerous. Just google "pokemon christian" and most of the links are of how its demonic and gets kids into occult practices. Same with Harry Potter, Star wars, etc.

I'm a big fan of these, and hope we can have something like them on the New Earth.

Some people will see evil in anything but it is still true we need to be discerning. I have no problems with Pokemon, Harry Potter, Twilight ... but I didn't like Digimon too much, mostly because I felt the content was less appropriate for the age group I was dealing with at the time. At 14 that would be quite different.

There are skill level games to work with hand eye coordination and there are games that impose good against evil in a fantasy sense. Some still say its still good hand and eye coordination, but what are they learning from it. Will they think only evil exists in a fantasy world or will they know that evil is real and is very dangerous in the real world? Perhaps some find it a way to vent out on the evil characters, to smash, kill and mangle the evil fantasy characters since taking it on anyone in the real world is deemed against the laws of the States. Some games put in drugs, drinking and smoking to advertise such things in a game, thus children who want to be like the characters will do the same, at least the makers of the game hope since they are not always good people. One thing to look at is what it is doing to the child's life. These people that build the games are not Christian, those that are will make a Christian based game that helps with a skill. Otherwise, it is all a mind melting scheme to fit into the characters and become them the more the child becomes a fan of the characters. Some children are able to know reality from fantasy, some can't and will live that fantasy. I think computer games are ok if it is like Tetris, but I would rather see my child out playing and getting some exercise instead.

A Christian should stay as true to the way as possible. We are told to have no other gods before us. If we are into any video games that we have become addicted to ,we are putting those things before Christ. Addiction means we have turned our hearts and minds over to these things and do not focus like we should on God. Time is being consumed, time that could be used to study and praise God,instead we tend to be lax in our worship and study. These things are between you and God.
I can remember when B.Clinton was in office,it seems that every day some news was brought out about his personal life. After awhile some got numb to it and the effect grew weaker and weaker on them. These video games with any occult references are the same. Like drugs or alcohol we start out with just a little and slowly we become numb to there effects.
I do not know God's time line, but as time goes on,it seems like the end could be close. A Christian needs all the help he can get to achieve his goal to walk a good walk. These games seem harmless and the more you indulge the more harmless they seem to be. As the end draws close, people that are into the occult at any level as small as it may seem, will be more ready to accept satan's scheme.
Like I said before these things are between you and God. You do not have to do this, but humor me so to speak. The next time you feel the impulse to play these games,Stop and seek the Lord. Ask Him if this time should be spent for Him or these games. Ask Him if you are addicted,if you are He will send conviction. If you have that feeling inside that you are being convicted to stop using you time in these things and should be using that time for God,you have just grown up a little like all of us do. As we walk daily with Christ we all have these little chats with God,that at times send conviction. We pray and move on,dropping those things that are hindering our growth with Him. This just means as we all walk with Christ we should mature and grow with Him. God Bless

I guess it is a fear of the occult, combined with a complete lack of knowledge about what occultism is. I've been into witchcraft in the past, Ive had spirits possess me willingly and I've looked into the underworld, I can put anyone in a trance where they would experience amazing things - and I just sigh from how many stupid ideas Christians seem to have.

Dear ExaltedReign. Let`s put it this way: If you like to play with fire, it is your choice, but you are fore-warned, ExaltedReign. Satan is extremely clever/crafty, and will let you believe as you do, until the right moment. Although Jesus vanquished Satan on Golgotha, Satan is still strong enough to devour the unwary. I say this with love. Greetings from Emmy, your sister in Christ.

Dear Exalted Reign

My kids play video games, but we discuss them first.
I think there are some (games/movies/music), that are downright promoting sin.
Saying all that, Christianity is not 'what game you are playing'
or 'what song you are listening to', but rather, does it control you? (because it shouldn't) Or do you let the HOLY SPIRIT control you?

It could be more wicked playing monopoly or scrabble or clothes shopping
than watching some movie/playing some other game.

For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don't use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love. Galatians 5:13

It's because people believe that these things influence us even if we don't realize it. People believe that the devil is very tricky and can appear as an angel of light (appear good) and deceive this way. So people are cautioned to stay away from anything that hints of him or his ways. It's because they believe that they won't be able to tell the good from the bad (because of deception) and so the safest bet is to stay away...

And really, the battle for good and bad goes on invisibly, in our soul, through the media. People get brainwashed by the things they see/hear. They change. They don't realize it, but they change based on what they learn. It's like we are robots and our minds are like computer. And they can be reprogrammed to make us be and act a certain way. So the media programs us one way, the church the other way and the parents yet another way. Programming goes on all the time. It's just a matter of whose influence is stronger....

We have a saying: "stick and stones can hurt my bones, but words will never hurt me". While this is true referring to the physical body, it does not apply to our spiritual body - our heart. And if you could only see the hearts, you will see them all wounded and bloody. You would see the walking dead (some hearts were killed already). In the physical world, people appear normal. But in the "heart world" that's where the battle scars are. That's where everybody is hurting and bleeding. That's where the real war takes place. And if the physical world we cannot see how the programming (of what we hear/see) affects us, but in the heart world you would see the arrows slashing through the heart and mind and doing their dirty work.

You flatter yourself. I do not mean this in a mean way,but I beg to differ with you. You can not put anyone you want into a trance of any kind. #1 a person has to allow themselves to be placed in a trance. This is a matter of choice or ignorance. If what you say is true(it is not) the whole world would be controlled already. The occult is kind of like poison ivy,you know it is there but you do not touch it,because you do not like the results. That is not fear just knowledge of what can happen to you. This idea you have put forth is just as stupid as any Christian idea you can think of. By the way I have absolutely no fear of the occult,I know it for what it is. If you wish to indulge into the occult, that is your free choice. I do not wish to practice or take part in any part of it. And you or anyone else does not have the power to force me into it,let alone put me in a trance.

"Why do Christians seem crazy?"

Christians are human and therefore they do all the things that humans do, such as hating, murdering, lying, stealing, acting crazy, etc.

The bible says Christians are new creations, but I have to take that to be symbolic or poetic. If Christians were new creations, they'd wouldn't do that stuff, however, they do. So therefore they are not new creations or some kind of super-human. They remain completely human with all that that entails.

I find it odd that you would call me crazy, when we have never met. As you get older
your tastes will change, Instead of looking at the created games and toys of others
like pokemon. You will be thinking of girls or a career. My godson progressed from Barney, to Ninja Turtles, Power Rangers, Yougio, WWF, UFC, now he
at 15 is intersted in girls and sports. ESPN. and looking foward to college.
Now everyone is different. Some stay involved in these images you like and they become
graphic artists, writers, video game experts and some make alot of money.
I myself like superman, but you have to remember, they are not real and they
are no subsitute for personal relationships.
And as being young, you have no idea of the dark side, your images and cartoons
are nothing compared to the real thing.
Harry Potter, forget it. Not even close.
The true evil will come as light and smile.
You will not even know it is there.
Weakness is perfect strength, If you can understand that quote, you will know.

I love my cat like crazy. I mean when he gives me his little whisper nuzzles and then spills out a little half-purr half-breath it takes my breath away...he's so stinking pretty and gentle and wonderful. I may even be "in love" with him because my heart pounds with warm fuzzies whenever he glances at me with his big juicy white eyeliner lined green eyes.

I'm sure that to some religious people this may qualify me in their minds as an "idol worshiper"...But I couldn't care less because

Anyway, play on.

I find this kind of argument a lot in society.

"Americans all hate Pokemon and Harry Potter and Star Wars and Lost and..."

Why? Because some American said that to them, so they juxtapose - somehow - that onto all Americans.

They miss the absurdity of it.

Sometimes they have their mind messed with. Some Americans go abroad, are really rude, and exclaim loudly how they represent all of America.

Meanwhile, there are plenty of quiet Americans around them who are their friends.

I see you are in America where about 75% of the population or so is Christian. I would have to say Harry Potter, Science Fiction, Fantasy, and the like is very popular with that 75% of the population.

You could argue, like these people you are complaining about, "they are not really Christian". But then you are agreeing with and believing these people you are complaining against.

And you end up promoting their mindset even while thinking yourself against them.

That is the reality of how strange people really are.

"Be careful," Jesus said to them. "Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees."

1 Corinthians 5:6
Don't you know that a little yeast works through the whole batch of dough?

Mark 7:15
Nothing outside a man can make him 'unclean' by going into him. Rather, it is what comes out of a man that makes him 'unclean.' "

We can still be discerning about all "influences" of the spiritual nature without becoming legalistic. We don't need to "rid" them from our lives as the "puritans" have tried, which led to legalism, tyranny, and oppression, utter sin, we only need to not "accept" that spirit when the choice presents it's self. Discernment not legalism....

Or what Johnnz said for a less hyper spiritual response. :)

It's fear. They fear that allowing that thing to go on will make them loose something they believe is highly valuable to them.

Like their idea of heaven with their child. Digimon could have them fear they will lose that heaven due to their child not being allowed into heaven.

Often it's because they don't really know God. Not intimately. They tend to be so caught up in the organization and the polarized group mentality that they ignore God to do this ritualistic stuff. They get so good at ignoring God in their pursuit of Ideals that they lose track of what God wants for their lives. It's sad but that's the world today. I just pray that God can guide them on the true path he has for their lives and to free them of their fears. Maybe then we can truly say "Peace of the Lord be with you"
