  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

If you don't believe what I believe, even as crazy as it is, your in the clutches of Satan.
I don't believe in "Satan" but if I did, I
might well wonder how many of our nominal
"Christians" who promote all manner of lamebrain
nonsense and worse are actually agents of the
" father of" their lies.

Are you saying you don't wonder how many are actually agents?

I have a feeling you do anyway, whether you believe in Satan or not.

As you may recall I've already pointed out once already that this list needs updating. Might I remind you that you need to add the following:

6. The Bible is ambiguous on x, Science says x = go with ?
7. The Bible is ambiguous on x, Science says y = go with ?
8. The Bible is ambiguous on x, Science says ø = go with ?

And after further consideration there are a few more that you need to add:

9. Bible says x, Logic and Reason says x = go with ?
10. Bible says x, Logic and Reason says y = go with ?
11. Bible says x, Logic and Reason says ø = go with ?
12. Bible says ø, Logic and Reason says x = go with ?

I pray it helps you understand better

It isn't that I don't understand. It's not that complicated. It's that you're not only asking me to disregard science, you're asking me to disregard logic and reason as well, in lieu of what... legends told by prehistoric men over campfires, to impressionable children and illiterate adults, who spent their time staring at the stars and imagining Gods? Fanciful tales retold to countless generations only to become fodder for so many disparate iterations, interpretations, and religions that it's impossible to tell what the original purpose was... however innocent or well intentioned that may have been. Maybe it was to reassure the weary, or to explain the inexplicable... but whatever the reason, it's just what we humans do.

We imagine ourselves to be wise, to the point that even logic and reason lose their influence. We're human, we like to believe that in some sense we know... even when we don't.

So yes I understand. You have a set of beliefs to which you're so enamored... and have been for so long... that you can't possibly question them, but this is no different than billions of other people. You've simply woven a tighter web than most, and battened it down to the point that it's almost unassailable. But it's still the same story. Man believes he knows, and no power on heaven or earth can convince him otherwise.

I say fine, believe what you wanna believe. But maybe, just maybe, take a second or two out of your day and consider that you might be wrong. That's not too much to ask... is it?

You prayed that your post helped me understand better... I'll pray the same for you.

Unless of course it's not the Bible being contradicted but your literal reading of literary passages.
It's not science's fault you cannot recognise the genres of literature in Genesis.
It's not the bible's fault you cannot read it properly.

EG: You cherry-picked the promises to Noah after the flood as if they were hyper-literalistic promises that crops will NEVER EVER fail no matter what - therefore climate science is wrong! (Stamp your foot a bit while at it.) Then I reminded you that this literalistic reading of the Noah story fails a number of times by the end of Genesis - especially in Joseph's drought which is complete throughout the ancient world for 7 years!

You have not replied substantively - but divert to other topics and just try to forget about it.

It's just so unnecessary. Once you realise how 'decorated' the Noah event is as a theological description of some ancient flood - you can see that not everything is hyper-literal in it. EG: The sky has 'floodgates' that let water through the 'spheres'. It's hyper-theological. It's 'dressed up' in the language of mythological story telling, even though I think underneath and behind it all there was a real Noah and a terrible flood which judged their area of the known world.

Also, it's the most famous Chiastic structure until Beowulf!
But reading it like a YEC makes you and others nervous about science, and makes you miss the actual theological implications of the passage. Seriously - try listening to this The Flood - Undeceptions

Even a non-literal reading has the earth before the sun, angiosperms before the sun, and whales before land animals.

So either way, people can moan and groan about Genesis 1 not being literal, and/or being a poor example of myth.

Genesis 1 is truly a nightmare for evolutionists, and there's no way they can make it fit their philosophy.

Except it's not a nightmare in the slightest, only for those who argue it's literal against those who argue it isn't.

You didn't get my point, did you?

I can turn Genesis 1 into a nightmare, even for allegorists.

If they can turn it into a nightmare for us literalists, we can turn it into a nightmare for them as well.

To be honest, I don't think it's a nightmare for anyone. Either side can just go "No, you're wrong" and... that's kind of it.

A nightmare over Genesis 1 is something I've never experienced, not even close.

Me, neither.

I have a set of standards that fits Genesis 1 nicely.

In fact, Creationism is my forte.

There are people who can recite the litany of the DC-Universe as well.

Yes ... and I can recite Green Lantern's mantra when he powers up his ring.

I know every member of the JLA, along with their secret identities, their weaknesses, and most of their sidekicks.

What's your point?
