  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Why a crown of thorns??

It was to mock Jesus as King of the Jews, but was ironic that He was the King of Kings and Messiah the Jews looked for. The Romans hated the troublesome Jews who actually contributed much to their downfall, and any chance they got to mock the Jews was taken. In this case, the Jews were highly upset at this representation and only wanted Jesus crucified as a criminal. Pontious Pilot saw through the lies of the Jewish accusations against Jesus and did this cruel act of smashing a crown of thorns on Jesus head and nailing the sign "King of the Jews" over his head to frustrate the Jewish hierarchy. All the sins of man's hypocrisy fell upon the innocent Jesus.

Something that is found in the Bible that is overlooked, but an awesome sign of Christ's deity throughout the Scripture is found in Genesis. Overlook me for now, I can't remember the chapter, but it's where Abraham takes Isaac up on the mountain to sacrifice him.

Isaac asks where is the lamb to be sacrificed and Abraham says God will provide a lamb. Well after the angel stops Abraham from killing Isaac, Abraham sees a ram caught in the brambles by its horns. Well brambles also means thorns, so the lamb offered to take Isaac's place as a sacrifice was crowned in thorns, which eludes to Jesus' being crowned in thorns and offered as a lamb to take our places as well.

What better could illustrate "the emblem of suffering and shame" than a crown of thorns? If this one thing can more strongly symbolize anything, it symbolizes all that Jesus has done for us; He left his own crown of purity and love, so he could bear our crown of unrighteousness, pain, hatred and strife. When we think of the crown of thorns, may we ever remind ourselves of the great gift that our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ has given us so freely... Will we be faithful to him?

I never thought of that before. Its funny, that is one of the most told stories in church and sunday school, but I never thought of relating those two things before. Thanks for pointing this out. God really did provide the Lamb.

It is extraordinary how all the details recorded about Jesus in the gospels are more than just incidental. Either as fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy or as an allusion to the reason that Jesus was sent, it is becoming ever more apparant to me that no event recorded about the life of Jesus is without a deeper spiritual or symbolic meaning that goes beyond a simple recording of the historic facts.

In the passover meal, the lamb is put over a fire. 2 "stakes" are driven through it. One across the shoulders, the other from the head through the torse as to make a cross. In fact, it is called a cross. The intestines are taken out of the lamb and wrapped around the head of the lamb, which is called, "The crown of thorns". At 3 o'clock, the lamb is sacrificed. The lamb, also, cannot have any blemish on it, and must be a year old or younger. Also, the lamb, none of the bones can be broken, even when it is killed. Not one bone.

This was all told by a Rabbi who was doing the Seder meal (Passover meal) for us (our church). He also stated that today, since there is no temple, there is no sacraficing of the lambs any longer. But, doesn't this give new meaning, for those who did not know this, to the phrase, "Christ, our Passover, is sacraficed for us."?

Yours in Christ,
Jen

I did a search on Google. It bears witness with your post.

The priest took his knife and cut the throat of the Passover lamb, he would cry out, “It is finished”. He would open up the lamb with a knife and roast it upon a vertical spit with a horizontal crosspiece, holding the front legs wide apart. Then he would wrap the lamb’s intestines around his head, while it was being roasted. This was called, “the crown of the Passover lamb”.

[This is according to the Mishna and Sanhedrin Documents. Even the smallest detail of sacrifice points to the Lord Jesus...]

The intestines wrapped around the lamb’s head represent the crown of thorns upon the head of our Lord. Look at the way the lamb is spread on the spit, this too represents our Lord on the cross, with His arms spread out. Our Lord at His death said, "It is finished". This meaning now we are able to find salvation through the blood of Jesus.

By Grant Jefferies

I had never heard of this before.
Can anyone else give other sources?

Thanks
