Why do you think God told the Israelites to look upon the image of a bronze serpent upon a pole to be saved from sickness and death? I am not asking about the obvious symbolism, but why he may have used the symbol to channel his healing and mercy, rather than by some other means.

I don't think we can offer an answer as to why without referring to the obvious symbolism affirmed by Jesus Christ of Nazareth.
